Influence of the slow nonlinear response, of the nonlinear dispersion of the group velocities, and of the dispersion of the coupling coefficient on pulse self-switching in tunnel-coupled optical waveguides

Abstract

An investigation was made of the influence of the finite nonlinear response time, of the nonlinear dispersion of the group velocities, and of the dispersion of the coupling coefficient on self-switching of dome-shaped pulses in tunnel-coupled optical waveguides and other distributively coupled systems supporting unidirectional waves. Estimates are obtained of the maximum values of the parameters above which self-switching is perturbed. Relationships representing the influence of these parameters are determined graphically and partly interpreted. It is proposed to use the results in estimating the parameter of discrete optical transistors and logic devices pumped by a sequence of ultrashort pulses.

Optical transistors and bistable devices utilizing nonlinear transmission of light in systems with undirectional coupled waves

A. A. Maǐer

An analysis is made of nonlinear transmission (self-switching, self-modulation) of light in tunnel-coupled cubically nonlinear waveguides and other optical systems carrying unidirectional waves with a distributed coupling which become separated at the exit from a system if at least one of the waves travels in a medium with a cubic (Kerr) susceptibility. Optical transistors and bistable devices based on these systems are considered. The threshold energy of bistable devices based on coupled GaAs waveguides is ~10−10–10−9 J.

Coupled-mode analysis of the self-induced-transparency soliton switch

Ángela M. Guzmán, F. S. Locati, M. Romagnoli +1 more

The dynamics of a nonlinear resonant tapered coupler is analyzed by using coupled-mode equations. The constituent waveguides are made of a linear host material doped with resonant impurities. Such a system allows a mechanism for all-optical switching. It is shown that nonlinear exchange between coupled waveguides originates from the group-velocity dependence on the propagating pulse power and/or area. The transmitted signal is always a multiple of the self-induced-transparency fundamental soliton. The dynamics of the pulse tuned or detuned from the resonance and with the inclusion of the material relaxation terms is discussed. In the last section the problem of soliton collision in the coupling region is considered; in this case an initial interpulse phase difference may determine a power-dependent outport switching.

Ultrashort soliton switching based on coherent energy hiding

M. Romagnoli, Stefan W. Wabnitz, L. Zoccolotti

Coherent coupling between light and atoms may be exploited for conceiving a novel class of all-optical signalprocessing devices without a direct counterpart in the continuous-wave regime. We show that the self-switching of ultrashort soliton pulses on resonance with a transition of doping centers in a slab waveguide directional coupler is based on nonlinear group-velocity (instead of the usual phase-velocity) changes.

All-optical switching of slow-light pulses in nonlinear Bragg grating couplers

Sangwoo Ha, Andrey A. Sukhorukov, Yuri S. Kivshar

We suggest novel opportunities for power-controlled switching and slowing down of optical pulses in coupled waveguides with phase-shifted Bragg gratings, combined with cancellation of dispersion-induced pulse broadening through enhanced nonlinear self-action in the slow-light regime.

Characteristics of self-switching of unidirectional distributively coupled waves with orthogonal polarisations

A. A. Maǐer, K. Yu. Sitarskii

A general solution of the problem of the interaction between unidirectional distributively coupled waves with orthogonal polarisations is found an analysed. Interesting features of optical self-switching of these waves are identified and key formulas describing such switching are derived. It is shown that signal amplification as a result of self-switching may be extremely high and this can happen even when the coupling coefficient is zero. This case of zero coefficient is paradoxically of the greatest practical interest. The results obtained should be useful in working with birefringent waveguides and crystals.

We study the tolerances in the phase shift between the Bragg gratings in coupled waveguides, for optimisation of power-controlled switching and slowing down of optical pulses, and cancellation of dispersion-induced pulse broadening through enhanced nonlinear self-action.
