Abstract

We suggest novel opportunities for power-controlled switching and slowing down of optical pulses in coupled waveguides with phase-shifted Bragg gratings, combined with cancellation of dispersion-induced pulse broadening through enhanced nonlinear self-action in the slow-light regime.

We study the tolerances in the phase shift between the Bragg gratings in coupled waveguides, for optimisation of power-controlled switching and slowing down of optical pulses, and cancellation of dispersion-induced pulse broadening through enhanced nonlinear self-action.

Nonlinear switching in a Bragg grating with periodic ξ(3)

Jacques M. Laniel, Nicolas Bélanger, A. Villeneuve

We demonstrate numerically the nonlinear switching in a Bragg grating with a periodically modulated nonlinearity. Improved functionalities can be obtained through a π phase-shift between the linear and nonlinear gratings.

Slow light waveguide optical switch

Ayumi Fuchida, Fumio Koyama

We propose a novel optical switch with slowing light. Slowing light in Bragg reflector waveguide can miniaturize optical switch because large equivalent refractive index is available due to giant waveguide dispersion.

Ultrashort soliton switching based on coherent energy hiding

M. Romagnoli, Stefan W. Wabnitz, L. Zoccolotti

Coherent coupling between light and atoms may be exploited for conceiving a novel class of all-optical signalprocessing devices without a direct counterpart in the continuous-wave regime. We show that the self-switching of ultrashort soliton pulses on resonance with a transition of doping centers in a slab waveguide directional coupler is based on nonlinear group-velocity (instead of the usual phase-velocity) changes.

SLOW AND STOPPED LIGHT 'Slow' and 'fast' light in resonator-coupled waveguides

John E. Heebner, Robert W. Boyd

We describe a device constructed of a sequence of microresonators coupled to an optical waveguide. The influence of these resonators is to enhance nonlinearities and to induce strong dispersive effects, leading to exotic optical properties including slow and superluminal group velocities of propagation.
