Abstract

We experimentally investigate the soliton formation and dynamics in the nonlinear propagation of the generated signal and probe beams in four-wave mixing (FWM) process with atomic coherence in a three-level atomic system, under the competition between focusing and defocusing nonlinearities, as well as between gain and dissipation, due to the third- and fifth-order nonlinear susceptibilities with opposite signs. With multi-parameter controllability and nonlinear competition in the system, fundamental, dipole, and azimuthally-modulated vortex FWM solitons can transform mutually from one to the other. Such investigations have potential applications in optical pattern formation and control, and all-optical communication.

Cubic-quintic condensate solitons in four-wave mixing

Zhenkun Wu, Yiqi Zhang, Chenzhi Yuan +4 more

We experimentally investigate the two-dimensional condensate (optical dropletlike) soliton formation and dynamics of the generated signal and probe beams in four-wave mixing (FWM) process with atomic coherence, under competition between the third- and fifth-order nonlinear susceptibilities. With such competing nonlinearities, mutual transformations among dropletlike fundamental, dipole, and azimuthally modulated vortex FWM solitons are observed. The influence of nonlinear competition on the photonic band gap is also investigated. All the results are obtained under low powers.

Modulated vortex solitons of four-wave mixing

Yanpeng Zhang, Zhiqiang Nie, Yan Jie Zhao +4 more

We experimentally demonstrate the vortex solitons of four-wave mixing (FWM) in multi-level atomic media created by the interference patterns with superposing three or more waves. The modulation effect of the vortex solitons is induced by the cross-Kerr nonlinear dispersion due to atomic coherence in the multi-level atomic system. These FWM vortex patterns are explained via the three-, four- and five-wave interference topologies.

Observation of multi-component spatial vector solitons of four-wave mixing

Ruimin Wang, Zhenkun Wu, Yiqi Zhang +6 more

We report the observation of multi-component dipole and vortex vector solitons composed of eight coexisting four-wave mixing (FWM) signals in two-level atomic system. The formation and stability of the multi-component dipole and vortex vector solitons are observed via changing the experiment parameters, including the frequency detuning, powers, and spatial configuration of the involved beams and the temperature of the medium. The transformation between modulated vortex solitons and rotating dipole solitons is observed at different frequency detunings. The interaction forces between different components of vector solitons are also investigated.

Coherent control of dressed images of four-wave mixing

Zhenkun Wu, Yi‐Qi Zhang, Tai-Kun Liu +4 more

In two-level as well as V-type three-level atomic systems, we study probe transmission, four-wave mixing (FWM) and fluorescence signals with dressing effect experimentally and theoretically. We find both the hyperfine structure (at the same energy level) and the transition dipole moment (at different energy levels) can affect the dressing effect. We also experimentally investigate that angle-control dynamics in the nonlinear propagation of the images of the probe and generated FWM in two-level atomic systems, and find that the focusing and defocusing of probe beam and FWM signals can be greatly affected by the angles between dressing fields.

Spatial Four Wave Mixing, Probe Images, and Fluorescence Signals in Dressed Three-Level System

Huayan Lan, Jia Sun, Zhenkun Wu +4 more

We investigate the spatial images of the probe, generated four wave mixing (FWM) signal and the accompanying fluorescence spectrum signal simultaneously in FWM process in a cascade three-level atomic system for the first time. We experimentally observe and theoretically investigate the three spectrum signals versus the probe field as well as the dressing field frequency detunings. Utilizing the experimental results of spectrum signals, the cross phase modulation and the relative position between the weak and strong beams, we analyze the characteristics indicated in the spatial images of probe transmission and FWM, such as focusing or defocusing, shift and splitting in detail. Such studies can be used in all-optical controlled spatial signal transmission.

Four-wave-mixing gap solitons

Yanpeng Zhang, Zhiguo Wang, Huaibin Zheng +4 more

We report an experimental demonstration of generating gap soliton trains in a four-wave-mixing (FWM) signal. Such spatial FWM surfacelike gap soliton trains are induced in a periodically modulated self-defocusing atomic medium by the cross-phase modulation, which can be reshaped under different experimental conditions, such as different atomic densities, nonlinear dispersions, and dressing fields. Controlling spatial gap solitons can have important applications in image memory, processing, and communication.
