Abstract

We experimentally investigate the two-dimensional condensate (optical dropletlike) soliton formation and dynamics of the generated signal and probe beams in four-wave mixing (FWM) process with atomic coherence, under competition between the third- and fifth-order nonlinear susceptibilities. With such competing nonlinearities, mutual transformations among dropletlike fundamental, dipole, and azimuthally modulated vortex FWM solitons are observed. The influence of nonlinear competition on the photonic band gap is also investigated. All the results are obtained under low powers.

Solitons of four-wave mixing in competing cubic-quintic nonlinearity

Zhenkun Wu, Yunzhe Zhang, Zakir Ullah +2 more

We experimentally investigate the soliton formation and dynamics in the nonlinear propagation of the generated signal and probe beams in four-wave mixing (FWM) process with atomic coherence in a three-level atomic system, under the competition between focusing and defocusing nonlinearities, as well as between gain and dissipation, due to the third- and fifth-order nonlinear susceptibilities with opposite signs. With multi-parameter controllability and nonlinear competition in the system, fundamental, dipole, and azimuthally-modulated vortex FWM solitons can transform mutually from one to the other. Such investigations have potential applications in optical pattern formation and control, and all-optical communication.

Propagation of optical vortices in a nonlinear atomic medium with a photonic band gap

Zhaoyang Zhang, Danmeng Ma, Yiqi Zhang +3 more

We experimentally generate a vortex beam through a four-wave mixing (FWM) process after satisfying the phase-matching condition in a rubidium atomic vapor cell with a photonic band gap (PBG) structure. The observed FWM vortex can also be viewed as the reflected part of the launched probe vortex from the PBG. Further, we investigate the propagation behaviors, including the spatial shift and splitting of the probe and FWM vortices in the medium with enhanced Kerr nonlinearity induced by electromagnetically induced transparency. This Letter can be useful for better understanding and manipulating the applications involving the interactions between optical vortices and the medium.

Kerr-nonlinearity-modulated dressed vortex four-wave mixing from photonic band gap

Junling Che, Peilin Zhao, Danmeng Ma +1 more

Considering the fact that the orbital angular momentum of light can be transferred through light-matter interactions, we experimentally induced a dressed vortex four-wave mixing (FWM) with the interaction between a vortex probe beam and an inverted Y-type four-level atomic system with a photonic band gap. Further, the Kerr-nonlinearity-modulated propagation behaviors of the probe and the dressed FWM vortices are investigated, including the spatial shift, splitting, and incompleteness of the vortex shape. Strikingly, the propagation behaviors of the vortex beams can be influenced by the interaction between the nonlinear phase and the spiral phase. This study would promote the development of optical computing and information processing science related to the interactions between optical vortices and samples.

Observation of multi-component spatial vector solitons of four-wave mixing

Ruimin Wang, Zhenkun Wu, Yiqi Zhang +6 more

We report the observation of multi-component dipole and vortex vector solitons composed of eight coexisting four-wave mixing (FWM) signals in two-level atomic system. The formation and stability of the multi-component dipole and vortex vector solitons are observed via changing the experiment parameters, including the frequency detuning, powers, and spatial configuration of the involved beams and the temperature of the medium. The transformation between modulated vortex solitons and rotating dipole solitons is observed at different frequency detunings. The interaction forces between different components of vector solitons are also investigated.

Modulation of four-wave mixing via photonic band gap

Zhenkun Wu, Kai-Ge Chang, Yi Hu +3 more

The dressed four-wave mixing (FWM) in a four-level 85 Rb atomic system, experimentally demonstrated in this paper, is comprised by two coexisting processes. One is emission signal due to enhanced nonlinear via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The other is the Bragg reflection of probe beam because of the created photonic band gap (PBG), which is affected by both linear and third-order nonlinear susceptibility. Moreover, we have demonstrated that different experimental parameters can significantly influence the measured signal with flexibly controlled PBG. These studies are found useful for understanding the fundamental mechanisms in generated FWM processing.

Modulated vortex solitons of four-wave mixing

Yanpeng Zhang, Zhiqiang Nie, Yan Jie Zhao +4 more

We experimentally demonstrate the vortex solitons of four-wave mixing (FWM) in multi-level atomic media created by the interference patterns with superposing three or more waves. The modulation effect of the vortex solitons is induced by the cross-Kerr nonlinear dispersion due to atomic coherence in the multi-level atomic system. These FWM vortex patterns are explained via the three-, four- and five-wave interference topologies.
