Abstract

The dressed four-wave mixing (FWM) in a four-level 85 Rb atomic system, experimentally demonstrated in this paper, is comprised by two coexisting processes. One is emission signal due to enhanced nonlinear via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The other is the Bragg reflection of probe beam because of the created photonic band gap (PBG), which is affected by both linear and third-order nonlinear susceptibility. Moreover, we have demonstrated that different experimental parameters can significantly influence the measured signal with flexibly controlled PBG. These studies are found useful for understanding the fundamental mechanisms in generated FWM processing.

Controlling multi-wave mixing signals via photonic band gap of electromagnetically induced absorption grating in atomic media

Yiqi Zhang, Zhenkun Wu, Xin Yao +4 more

We experimentally demonstrate dressed multi-wave mixing (MWM) and the reflection of the probe beam due to electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) grating can coexist in a five-level atomic ensemble. The reflection is derived from the photonic band gap (PBG) of EIA grating, which is much broader than the PBG of EIT grating. Therefore, EIA-type PBG can reflect more energy from probe than EIT-type PBG does, which can effectively affect the MWM signal. The EIA-type as well as EIT-type PBG can be controlled by multiple parameters including the frequency detunings, propagation angles and powers of the involved light fields. Also, the EIA-type PBG by considering both the linear and third-order nonlinear refractive indices is also investigated. The theoretical analysis agrees well with the experimental results. This investigation has potential applications in all-optical communication and information processing.

Propagating multi-channel four-wave mixing process in the modulated moving photonic band gap

Ming‐Liang Hu, Zhiyong Qin, Junling Che +1 more

Three and four electromagnetically induced transparency windows generate the multi-channel four-wave mixing (FWM) process are observed in a four-level atomic system. The transmission of the probe field and the reflection of the FWM are investigated in the modulated moving photonic band gap structures which are caused by the coupling fields with a relative small detuning offset when scanning detuning frequency of the probe field and the dressing field, respectively. The experimental results show that the more channels spectrum signal of the FWM process can be modulated and the generated multi-channel can be further modulated by adding a dressing field. We have also explained theoretically these experimental results which may have applications in the design of photonic crystal and optical signal amplifiers.

Phase Modulation of Photonic Band Gap Signal

Zhiguo Wang, Mengqin Gao, Abdul Rasheed Mahesar +1 more

We first investigate the probe transmission signal (PTS) and the four wave mixing band gap signal (FWM BGS) modulated simultaneously by the relative phase and the nonlinear phase shift in the photonic band gap (PBG) structure. The switch between the absorption enhancement of PTS and the transmission enhancement of PTS with the help of changing the relative phase and the nonlinear phase shift is obtained in inverted Y-type four level atomic system experimentally and theoretically. The corresponding switch in PTS can be used to realize all optical switches. On other hand, the relative phase and the nonlinear phase shift also play the vital role to modulate the intensity of FWM BGS reflected from the PBG structure. And it can be potentially used to realize the optical amplifier.

Kerr-nonlinearity-modulated dressed vortex four-wave mixing from photonic band gap

Junling Che, Peilin Zhao, Danmeng Ma +1 more

Considering the fact that the orbital angular momentum of light can be transferred through light-matter interactions, we experimentally induced a dressed vortex four-wave mixing (FWM) with the interaction between a vortex probe beam and an inverted Y-type four-level atomic system with a photonic band gap. Further, the Kerr-nonlinearity-modulated propagation behaviors of the probe and the dressed FWM vortices are investigated, including the spatial shift, splitting, and incompleteness of the vortex shape. Strikingly, the propagation behaviors of the vortex beams can be influenced by the interaction between the nonlinear phase and the spiral phase. This study would promote the development of optical computing and information processing science related to the interactions between optical vortices and samples.

Electromagnetically induced transparency and four wave mixing in coherently coupled Λ system

Min Kyeong Kim, Lim Lee, Xumei Su +1 more

We have measured electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and four wave mixing (FWM) signals in a three level atomic system to enhance nonlinearity for a weak field due to quantum coherence with standing fields. We were able to observe quite different EIT signals according to a traveling or standing coupling field. (1) We obtained EIT and FWM signals depending on detunings, polarization, (2) and power of the coupling field. Our results will be analyzed theoretically in viewpoint of a photonic band gap model.

Interplay between six wave mixing photonic band gap signal and second-order nonlinear signal in electromagnetically induced grating

Zhiguo Wang, Mengqin Gao, Zakir Ullah +4 more

For the first time, we experimentally and theoretically research about the second-order nonlinear signal (SNS) including electromagnetically induced absorbing (EIA) and electromagnetically induced gain (EIG), six wave mixing band gap signal (SWM BGS) resulting from photonic band gap structure in an inverted Y-type four level system with the electromagnetically induced grating. The interplay between the SNS and SWM BGS is illustrated clearly for the first time. When we change the frequency detuning to make the SWM BGS and SNS overlap, the SWM BGS is suppressed and the intensity of SNS is strongest near the resonance point. We can control the intensity of the SWM BGS and EIG caused by the classic effect through changing the power of coupling field. And the changes on the EIA generated by the quantum effect are obtained by changing the power of dressing field. Since the SWM BGS is the enhancement of the four wave mixing band gap signal (FWM BGS), when we set FWM BGS as the input and SNS as the modulation role to control the amplification amplitude for the FWM BGS in our scheme, the adjustable optical amplifier can be obtained.
