Exciton-induced squeezed state of light in semiconductors

Nguyen Ba An

Abstract

In this paper a mechanism for the generation of a squeezed state of light is theoretically presented. Due to coupling with excitons and via exciton-exciton interaction, a light beam propagating within a finite-size semiconductor sample is shown to evolve into a squeezed state. Based on an effective bosonic Hamiltonian, which is obtained from the original fermionic one, a detailed derivation of the photon quadrature variances is presented and dependences of the photon squeezing on both the extrinsic and intrinsic parameters are analyzed.

GENERATION OF SQUEEZED EXCITONS IN SEMICONDUCTORS BY COHERENT LIGHT

Nguyen Ba An, THAI HOA TRAN

In this letter, we show that semiconductor excitons generated by coherent light may become squeezed. This is due to their interactions both with the light and among themselves. Based on a polariton theory and using a secular approximation, analytical expressions for exciton quadrature variances have been derived, which enable us to study easily the dependence of exciton squeezing degree on the pumping light intensity, frequency detuning and strength of exciton-exciton, as well as exciton-photon, interactions.

On exciton squeezing in semiconductors

Nguyen Ba An

We consider an optically excited semiconductor as a coherent system of interacting excitons and photons. Within the boson formalism and secular approximation the analytical expressions for the exciton quadrature variances are rigorously derived. The analysis of these variances over the relevant parameter space shows that initially coherent excitons can evolve into squeezed states in a finite-size semiconductor, which must possess both linear and non-linear interactions.

Light squeezing via exciton-exciton interaction in semiconductors

Nguyen Ba An

In the excitonic polariton picture light squeezing is studied as a function of the exciton-exciton interaction. The influence of the photon frequency detuning, the initial photon intensity and exciton density as well as the magnitude of both the exciton-exciton and exciton-photon interactions on the squeezing process of light are investigated in detail.

Squeezed light in a semiconductor microcavity

Xuan Zuo, Zi-Xu Lu, Zhiyuan Fan +2 more

Squeezed light is a particularly useful quantum resource, which finds broad applications in quantum information processing, quantum metrology and sensing, and biological measurements. Here we show how to produce squeezed light exploiting the strong exciton–phonon nonlinear interaction in a semiconductor microcavity. The semiconductor microcavity is embedded with a quantum well, which supports both linear and nonlinear interactions among excitons, phonons, and cavity photons. We show that the strong exciton–phonon deformation potential interaction can induce a quadrature-squeezed cavity output field, and further reveal an important role of the exciton–photon coupling in engineering the squeezing spectrum and improving the robustness of the squeezing against thermal noise. Our results indicate that substantial optical squeezing in a broad band, up to tens of gigahertz, can be achieved using currently available parameters.

Density-Dependent Squeezing of Excitons in Highly Excited Semiconductors

Nguyễn Hồng Quang

The time evolution from coherent states to squeezed states of high density excitons is studied theoretically based on the boson formalism and within the Random Phase Approximation. Both the mutual interaction between excitons and the anharmonic exciton-photon interaction due to phase-space filling of excitons are included in consideration. It is shown that the exciton squeezing depends strongly on the exciton density in semiconductors and becomes smaller with increasing the latter.

Light squeezing via a biexciton in a semiconductor microcavity

Hisaki Oka, Hiroshi Ajiki

We theoretically investigate the squeezing of light by the interaction between a biexciton and cavity polaritons. As a model system, we consider a CuCl-quantum-well microcavity in which a biexciton can stably exist. An effective biexciton-polariton coupled state can be formed by controlling the polariton level structure by modifying the quantum-well thickness. We analyze in detail the nonlinear optical response obtained from the coupled state, and evaluate the light squeezing by directly calculating the variance of quantum noise in the output field, in terms of the dependence of the squeezing on the incident light intensity. We clarify an optimal condition yielding maximum squeezing and show that squeezing is enhanced by utilizing biexciton nonlinearity, compared with the squeezing achieved in a system having no biexciton.
