Light squeezing via exciton-exciton interaction in semiconductors

Abstract

In the excitonic polariton picture light squeezing is studied as a function of the exciton-exciton interaction. The influence of the photon frequency detuning, the initial photon intensity and exciton density as well as the magnitude of both the exciton-exciton and exciton-photon interactions on the squeezing process of light are investigated in detail.

GENERATION OF SQUEEZED EXCITONS IN SEMICONDUCTORS BY COHERENT LIGHT

Nguyen Ba An, THAI HOA TRAN

In this letter, we show that semiconductor excitons generated by coherent light may become squeezed. This is due to their interactions both with the light and among themselves. Based on a polariton theory and using a secular approximation, analytical expressions for exciton quadrature variances have been derived, which enable us to study easily the dependence of exciton squeezing degree on the pumping light intensity, frequency detuning and strength of exciton-exciton, as well as exciton-photon, interactions.

Exciton-induced squeezed state of light in semiconductors

Nguyen Ba An

In this paper a mechanism for the generation of a squeezed state of light is theoretically presented. Due to coupling with excitons and via exciton-exciton interaction, a light beam propagating within a finite-size semiconductor sample is shown to evolve into a squeezed state. Based on an effective bosonic Hamiltonian, which is obtained from the original fermionic one, a detailed derivation of the photon quadrature variances is presented and dependences of the photon squeezing on both the extrinsic and intrinsic parameters are analyzed.

SQUEEZED EXCITONS IN SEMICONDUCTORS

Nguyen Ba An

The concept is introduced of squeezed excitons that appear during the process of their interaction with squeezed photons. Situations are considered where the excitons initially are in the Fock or coherent states. For the excitons to become squeezed it is more favourable to prepare them beforehand in a coherent state than in a Fock one. The squeezing degree of excitons depends on that of the initial photons and on detuning.

Squeezed light in a semiconductor microcavity

Xuan Zuo, Zi-Xu Lu, Zhiyuan Fan +2 more

Squeezed light is a particularly useful quantum resource, which finds broad applications in quantum information processing, quantum metrology and sensing, and biological measurements. Here we show how to produce squeezed light exploiting the strong exciton–phonon nonlinear interaction in a semiconductor microcavity. The semiconductor microcavity is embedded with a quantum well, which supports both linear and nonlinear interactions among excitons, phonons, and cavity photons. We show that the strong exciton–phonon deformation potential interaction can induce a quadrature-squeezed cavity output field, and further reveal an important role of the exciton–photon coupling in engineering the squeezing spectrum and improving the robustness of the squeezing against thermal noise. Our results indicate that substantial optical squeezing in a broad band, up to tens of gigahertz, can be achieved using currently available parameters.

SEMICONDUCTOR EXCITON OPTICAL BISTABILITY AS INFLUENCED BY FREE CARRIERS

Nguyen Ba An, NGUYEN TRUNG DAN, Hoang Xuan Nguyen

Exciton density in an optically excited semiconductor is calculated as a function of pumping light intensity. In a certain domain in the detuning-intensity plane there may appear bistability of exciton density which is shown considerably influenced by the presence of free carriers. The carrier-induced effect manifests itself in the modification of phase diagrams leading to changes of the hysteresis loop size in both intensity-controlled and frequency-controlled bistabilities.

Density-Dependent Squeezing of Excitons in Highly Excited Semiconductors

Nguyễn Hồng Quang

The time evolution from coherent states to squeezed states of high density excitons is studied theoretically based on the boson formalism and within the Random Phase Approximation. Both the mutual interaction between excitons and the anharmonic exciton-photon interaction due to phase-space filling of excitons are included in consideration. It is shown that the exciton squeezing depends strongly on the exciton density in semiconductors and becomes smaller with increasing the latter.
