Tunnelling of Two-Level Atoms in Two-Photon Mazer: Atomic Coherence Effect and Statistics of Cavity Fields

Abstract

Tunnelling of a two-level atom is investigated in the two-photon mazer when the atom is initially prepared in a coherent superposition state and the cavity in various quantum states. For a strong coherent field, the tunnelling exhibits more regular oscillations but less remarkable switch effect than that in the one-photon mazer. It is discovered that in the presence of atomic coherence, the transmission probabilities in the ultracold regime are significantly different when the cavity field is initially in coherent, squeezed vacuum, even cat and odd cat states, respectively.

Injected coherence in the tunneling of ultracold atoms through a two-photon mazer in the squeezed vacuum and coherent field distributions

Fazal Badshah, T. Alharbi, Tony J. G. Apollaro +2 more

We examine the traversal aspect of ultracold two-level atoms through a high-quality two-photon mazer with squeezed vacuum and coherent field distributions. Here the net cavity potential is constituted by the coherent addition of multiple barriers and well potentials, which is quite different from the potential offered by a cavity in the Fock or vacuum state. For squeezed vacuum and coherent field distributions, one gets different phase times ( t p h ) for different modes of the distribution, which are then averaged by taking the weighted mean on the t p h over the n-dependent transmission probability. It is found that the nature, intensity of the field, and injected coherence of the incident atoms have a decisive role in controlling peak values and sub- and superclassical traversals of the tunneling atoms. For two of the system’s dressed states ( | Φ b 0 ⟩ , | Φ b 1 ⟩ ), the cavity offers reflectionless transmission, as the atoms experience zero potential due to the dark state formation. Moreover, for a somewhat intense cavity field, mazer action (scattering-type behavior) may be obtained for an extended range of energies due to increased cavity potential in the course of atom–cavity interaction.

Controlling tunneling of ultracold three-level atoms through a two-photon mazer cavity via the atom-field detuning

Fazal Badshah, Abdul Basit, Hamad Ali +3 more

Abstract We study the tunneling and traversal of ultracold three-level atoms through a high- Q microwave cavity. In particular, we analyzed effects of the atom-field detuning on the tunneling time of ultracold atoms through a two-photon mazer cavity. Here, photons are emitted and absorbed in pairs; therefore, the nature of the interaction is quite different from a single photon mazer. It is found that when an appropriate detuning is introduced, one may obtain alternate positive and negative values of the phase time of tunneling with increasing centre-of-mass energies of the incident atoms. Further, phase time can be switched between the sub- and super-classical characters, and its peak value may be smartly controlled by adjusting the atom-field detuning. More interestingly, we find that phase time rigorously depends on the internal degree of freedom of the interacting atoms, i.e. the final state in which the atoms are exiting the cavity.

Emission probability and photon statistics of a coherently driven mazer

Jin Xiong, Zhi‐Ming Zhang

The idea of a mazer is put forward with particular reference to the question of the driving-induced atomic coherence, which is established by a coherent driving field. The interaction of a quantum cavity field and an ultracold V-type three-level atom in which two levels are coupled by a coherent driving field, is derived. Its general quantum theory is established and the atomic emission probability and photon statistics are calculated and analysed. It is found that the mazer based on this driving-induced atomic coherence shows new features. There is a non-vanishing probability for the atom emitting a photon in the cavity even when the resonance condition is not fulfilled (here the resonance condition means that the cavity length is an integer multiple of half the atomic de Broglie wavelength). Under the resonance condition, the atomic emission probability has two sets of resonance peaks. For a very strong coherent driving field, the emission of the atom can be forbidden. As to the photon statistics, when the driving field is not very strong, the driving-induced atomic coherence reduces the photon number fluctuations of the cavity field. The photon statistics exhibits strong sub-Poissonian behaviour. In the region considered here, it can even be sub-Poissonian for any cavity length. However, when the driving field is too strong, the sub-Poissonian property may disappear.

Effects of field distribution on the tunneling time of ultracold atoms through high-quality cavities

Fazal Badshah, Yuan Zhou, Abdul Basit +4 more

Abstract We explore the traversal essence of the ultracold atoms propagating through high-quality cavities in vacuum, Fock state and coherent field distribution. The atom-field interaction is considered for a two-photon resonance process which transforms into a scattering-like venture with non-zero reflection/transmission probabilities. Here the field statistics strongly effects the interaction process and hence the tunneling time of the incident atoms through the cavity. We examine the propagation of the wave packet peaks associated with the atoms and referred it as the phase time of tunneling. It is found that for suitable field distributions, demeanor of the tunneling time might be smartly transposed from sub- to the super-classical nature. Further, extent and site of the sub- and superclassical peaks on the energy axis can be vigorously managed via the field intensity of the mazer cavity. Moreover, the mazer action (scattering like behavior) can be accomplished even for thermal atoms while using somewhat higher intensities of the field.

Tunneling time of the ultracold atoms: effects of the injected atomic coherence and field statistics

Fazal Badshah, Abdul Basit, Hamad Ali +2 more

Abstract We inspect the tunneling characteristics of ultraslow atoms through the coherent field of a high quality cavity. The potential offered by the cavity is due to multiple barriers and well constituents that dictate propagation of the atoms through the cavity. We examine tunneling time of the traversal corresponding to the maximal constructive/destructive interference by tuning parameters of the injected coherence. It is found that the sub- superclassical character of the tunneling time can be efficiently controlled through the phase of the injected atomic coherence. Further, mazer action (i.e. the scattering like aspect of the interaction) may be obtained for somewhat faster atoms by employing an intense cavity field. For one of the dressed state ( Φ b = b , 0 ), our system offers a free transmission as the incident atoms examine zero potential.

Mazer action in a bimodal cavity

R. Arun, G. S. Agarwal, Marlan O. Scully +1 more

The work of Meyer, Scully, and Walther [Phys. Rev. A 56, 4142 (1997)] is generalized to study the operation of a two-mode mazer with particular reference to the question of mode-mode correlations. The explicit expression for the detailed balance steady-state photon distribution has been derived. It is shown that the two-mode mazer exhibits much stronger sub-Poissonian statistics for each mode. The photon-number distributions are found to be quite sensitive to the presence of blackbody photons in the cavity. The interferences among contributions from different dressed states enable one to obtain the phase of the transmission amplitude of finding the atom in the initial excited state by considering a set of two measurements involving two different initial states of the atom-field system.
