Abstract

The collisional loss rates of 63${S}_{1/2}$ Rydberg atoms in cesium magneto-optical trap are measured by using the state-selective pulse field ionization technique and used to investigate the interaction between Rydberg atoms. The collisional loss rate coefficients due to collisions with Rydberg atoms and ground-state atoms are obtained by fitting the experimental data. The results indicate that the large collisional loss mainly comes from the strong long-range interaction between ultracold Rydberg atoms, and the loss rate is significantly increased under a weak electric field.

Collisional cross-sections measurement of ultracold caesium Rydberg states

Zhigang Feng, Linjie Zhang, Hao Zhang +3 more

We measure the total collisional cross-sections of caesium Rydberg nD ( n =37–40) states by measuring the corresponding effective decay rates versus Rydberg atoms density in a conventional magneto-optical trap using the state-selective pulse field ionization technique. The results indicate that the large collisional cross-sections mainly come from the contribution of Rydberg atoms interactions. We also obtain the spontaneous radiative lifetimes of different Rydberg states by fitting experimental data, which are in agreement with the existing theoretical values within experimental error.

Investigation of Collisional Cross Sections of 40SState Using Ultracold Caesium Rydberg Gas

Zhigang Feng, Jianming Zhao, Suotang Jia +1 more

The total collisional cross sections of caesium Rydberg 40 S state is obtained by measuring the corresponding effective decay rates as a function of Rydberg atoms density in a conventional magneto-optical trap using the state-selective pulse field ionization technique. We investigate the collisional properties for different Rydberg atomic densities in detail. The results indicate that the Rydberg atomic interaction induced collisions is the dominant mechanism leading to the large collisional cross sections.

Excitation Dynamics of Ultracold Cesium nS Rydberg Atoms

Hao Zhang, Junling Che, Zhigang Feng +3 more

Ultracold cesium n S ( n =60–70) Rydberg atoms are prepared using the two-photon scheme in a magneto-optical trap (MOT). The number of resonant Rydberg atoms is measured by the pulsed field ionization technique, and the dependences of the Rydberg signal on excitation duration and external DC electric field are investigated. The excitation dynamics and blockade effects due to long-range interactions are obtained. The effect of external electric field on Rydberg excitation is also investigated, and the experimental result shows an enhanced blockade with a weak external electric field.

State-Mixing of nS Rydberg Atoms in an External Electric Field

Yuechun Jiao, Limei Wang, Hao Zhang +3 more

State-mixing effect of ultracold nS cesium Rydberg atoms in an external electric field is investigated in a magneto-optical trap. Populated high-l Rydberg atoms due to the state-mixing through avoided crossings are measured with a state-selective field ionization technique. The measured transfer rates of high-l states increase with the electric field and get to the maximum at the field of about 3.0 V/cm for 49S1/2 Rydberg state, and show decrease behavior when the electric field increases further. The decrease behavior of the transfer rate is explained with the slower m-mixing effect caused by decreasing dipole–dipole interactions between high-l Rydberg atoms. During the m-mixing process the ultracold plasma is formed by the Penning ionization.

We investigate the effect of van der Waals interactions and dipole-dipole interactions on collisional loss rate coefficients of Cs Rydberg nP states, and in detail analyze the variation of collisional loss coefficients under the initial Rydberg atomic velocity and van der Waals interactions. We obtain the total collisional loss coefficients for different nP states, and provide the possible ionization mechanism for the results of experimental observation using our analysis model.

The Stark spectrum of cesium n D ( n = 39–50) Rydberg atoms are obtained by a state-selective field ionization method in a magneto-optical trap (MOT). The Stark shifts of Rydberg atoms are measured experimentally, the scalar and tensor polarizabilities of Rydberg atoms are obtained by fitting the experimental data, and the results are found to be in agreement with the existing theoretical calculations.
