Abstract

A model for description of the shapes of the coherent population trapping (CPT) resonances at different geometries of excitation and observation is developed. The numerical calculations, based on the irreducible tensor operator formalism, take into account the experimental geometry, the velocity distribution of the atoms, the Gaussian distribution of the laser beam intensity and the high rank polarization moments (HRPM). The results for different laser beam diameters, aperture of the detection, position of the photodetector etc. are compared with the experimental data. A method for description of the experimental shapes is proposed.

Shape of the coherent-population-trapping resonances and high-rank polarization moments

S. Gateva, L. Petrov, Emilia A. Alipieva +3 more

The shape of the coherent-population-trapping (CPT) resonances was investigated theoretically and experimentally at different laser powers. The CPT resonances were observed in fluorescence on the degenerate two-level system of the $({F}_{\ensuremath{\varphi}}=2\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{F}_{f}=1)$ transition of the $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ ${D}_{1}$ line by means of a Hanle effect configuration in an uncoated vacuum cell. Numerical simulations based on the density matrix formalism, which take into account the high-rank polarization moment (HRPMs) influence and the velocity distribution of the atoms, were used to calculate the shape of the nonlinear magnetic resonances. The comparison of the theoretical and experimental shapes of the CPT resonances demonstrated that the HRPMs influence the shape at all laser excitation powers, and this influence can be used to explain some peculiarities at the center of the CPT resonance shape.

Line shapes and widths of CPT resonances: effect of laser beam profile in open atomic system

Milan Radonjić, D. Arsenović, Z. D. Grujić +1 more

This work is concerned with the line profiles, amplitudes and widths of the coherent population trapping (CPT) resonances due to low frequency Zeeman coherences, in the Hanle configuration, applied to 87Rb atoms in the vacuum cell. Detailed calculations of the fluorescence were done with two different transverse intensity profiles of the excitation laser tuned to the open Fg = 2 → Fe = 1 transition. Comparison with experiment produces good agreement for the laser intensity dependence of CPT line-widths in the wide range of the laser intensity, when the laser transverse beam profile is Gaussian. Results for both step-like and Gaussian profile of the laser beam show asymptotic 1/√d dependence (d is the laser beam diameter) of CPT line-widths, for large range of the laser intensity.

Manifestation of high-rank polarization moments in the fluorescence CPT resonance

Emilia A. Alipieva, Elena T. Taskova, S. Gateva +1 more

Coherent Population Trapping (CPT) resonance obtained with linearly polarized laser beam through magnetic field sweep (Hanle configuration) was investigated in 87Rb D1 line. Influence of the coherence due to high-rank polarization moment (hexadecapole moment), created in the medium, on the CPT resonance shape was calculated and experimentally detected in fluorescence. It was observed as an inverted structure at a high power of excitation. To distinguish resonances due to coherence between Zeeman sub-levels with ΔmF=2 from that with ΔmF=4, the Larmour frequency ωLmodulated by applying an a.c. magnetic field (a.c. MF). Resonance signal at frequency corresponding to 4ωL observed in a fluorescence, and after lock-in on the frequency corresponding to frequency difference between sub-levels ΔmF=4.

Contribution of the polarization moments of different rank to the integral CPT signal

Elena T. Taskova, Emilia A. Alipieva, G. Todorov

In the present work we investigate the relation of the polarization moments having different ranks with the tensor components which form the observable integral CPT signal, in the presence of a stray magnetic field. A numerical experiment with parameters close to the real ones is performed, using a program based on the irreducible tensor operator formalism1. The integral fluorescent signal is calculated for the non-polarized fluorescence at different laser power excitation. Detailed analysis of the numerical solutions for all tensor components which describe population and alignment allows visualizing the dynamics of their behavior in dependence on the experimental geometry and laboratory magnetic field B′. The dependence of population f00, longitudinal f02 and transverse f22 alignment in the presence of transverse magnetic field is investigated. The shape and sign of the resonance change with laser power.

Coherent population trapping resonances in Cs atoms excited by elliptically polarized light

K. A. Nasyrov, S. Cartaleva, Nikolay Petrov +4 more

Coherent population trapping (CPT) resonances study in Hanle configuration is reported for different polarizations of the exciting light field, on the ${D}_{2}$ line of Cs atoms. While for linear/circular polarization dip/peak in the fluorescence is registered, in case of elliptical polarization, a complex shape resonance is evidenced experimentally, whose profile strongly depends on the ellipticity of polarization. A theoretical model is proposed and developed, which includes the influence on the resonance of polarization ellipticity, transverse magnetic field, and spatial intensity profile of the laser beam. Good agreement is found between the theoretical and experimental results. The reported results allow one to accomplish more profound than in previous research analysis of the CPT resonances behavior pointing out their sensitivity to the light polarization and power as well as to transverse magnetic fields. The presented study is of general importance for the wide application of the coherent resonances in high resolution spectroscopy and precise measurements. The purity of linear/circular polarization of the light needed in different applications can be estimated implementing the proposed model.

Nonlinear-resonance line shapes: Dependence on the transverse intensity distribution of a light beam

А. В. Тайченачев, Anatolii M Tumaikin, Valeriy I. Yudin +4 more

We analyze the line shape and width of atomic coherent-population-trapping (CPT) resonances excited by laser beams with different transverse intensity profiles. A dramatic difference in the resonance line shape is found when comparing a beam with a ``steplike'' profile to a beam with a Gaussian profile. In particular, for nonuniform profiles, a non-Lorentzian functional form is given that is more appropriate for describing the nonlinear resonance line shape than is a conventional Lorentzian. Our analysis is supported by measurements of CPT line shapes in a thermal vapor of ${}^{85}\mathrm{Rb}.$
