Abstract

It is shown that parametric amplification of signal waves of frequencies ωs=ωl± 2ωp and ωs=2ωp – ωl traveling in an inverted medium in the presence of a pump wave (frequency ωp) has the same gain as the laser wave (ωl) and occurs over a distance considerably greater than the linear phase-matching length. The possibility of experimental realization of such processes is considered.

Parametric amplification and oscillation using an inverted maser material

G. Dathe, K.-H. Steiner, D. Roth +1 more

Experimental results are reported demonstrating the possibility of achieving parametric gain in an inverted paramagnetic medium. In this case the parametric pump frequency may be lower than the signal frequency. The authors used chromium-doped rutile as the active material, a pump frequency of 150 MHz, and a signal frequency of 4.25 GHz. The parametric effect is strongly supported by adjusting the idling circuit for high master gain.

Parametric amplification near resonance in non-linear dispersive media

P N Butcher, R. Loudon, T P McLean

The behaviour of collinear signal, idler and pump waves in a non-linear medium without inversion symmetry is investigated under small-signal conditions when the frequency ω of either the signal or the idler approaches a transition frequency of the medium. The three waves are coupled together by the first-, second- and third-order susceptibility tensors of the medium. All three tensors exhibit a resonance in the case under consideration. The first-order resonance creates an absorption band and the third-order resonance produces stimulated Raman amplification. It is shown that the strength of the second-order resonance, which enters into the parametric effect, is determined by the product of the strengths of the other two. The growth constant of the signal and idler waves is a maximum when the mismatch of the propagation constants Δ k in the presence of the pump field takes a non-zero value equal to the decay constant at frequency ω times the ratio of the imaginary and real parts of the complex parametric growth constant, a quantity which is independent of the pump field strength. Except in the immediate neighbourhood of resonance, the frequency dependence of the optimum growth constant is controlled by the ratio of the peak Raman growth constant to the off-resonance parametric growth constant. When this ratio is small the optimum growth constant is never significantly larger than the off-resonance parametric value; when it is large the optimum growth constant slightly exceeds the peak Raman growth constant over a frequency range of 10-10 3 linewidths on one side of resonance. In the immediate neighbourhood of the resonance the optimum growth constant exhibits structure which is controlled by the anomalous dispersion and absorption resulting from the first-order resonance.

Possibility of effective amplification of optical signals in four-wave resonant parametric processes

Valery S. Butylkin, Gennady M. Krochik, Yu. G. Khronopulo

A theoretical analysis is made of the possibility of the amplification of optical signals in four-wave parametric processes involving two-photon (second-order) resonances. An expression is obtained for the gain in the case of spatial phase matching between the pump, signal, and idler waves. Conditions for achieving a high gain (of the order of 103–105) are determined.

Theorie der parametrischen Vier‐Photonen‐Wechselwirkung. III. Verstärkung und Oszillation bei Berücksichtigung der Rückwirkung auf die Pumpwelle

Abstract The processes of parametric amplification and oscillation in a medium with cubic polarization are investigated theoretically taking into consideration the depletion of the pump wave. We suppose that phase‐matching is realized exactly (a possible nonlinear detuning of the exact phase‐matching should be compensated by a suitable subsequent adjustment of the frequencies). A consequence of linear losses is the appearance of a threshold for the parametric amplification. There exist a maximum length, a minimum length and an optimum length of the nonlinear medium for the process of parametric amplification. The threshold intensity, the optimum length of the nonlinear medium and the optimum reflection coefficient for outcoupling are determined for two arrangements of the double resonant parametric four‐photon oscillator (ring resonator, FABRY‐PEROT resonator). It is shown that for the above mentioned arrangements of the single resonant and the double resonant four‐photon oscillator the efficiency is a monotonous function of the threshold excess. On the contrary in case of the three‐photon oscillator there exists an optimum value of the threshold excess.

Conversion of radiation frequency in four-wave parametric resonance processes based on stimulated Raman scattering

Gennady M. Krochik, Yu. G. Khronopulo

A theoretical analysis is made of the interaction between fields whose frequencies satisfy the relationship ωp–ωs=ωg±ωa≈ω21 , where ωp, ωs, ωg and ωa are the frequencies of the pump, Stokes, generated, and auxiliary fields; ω21 tne frequency of a transition between two levels in the investigated susbstance. The conditions are established for the maximum efficiency of the conversion of the fields ωp and ωa into the field ωg. It is shown that the optimal conversion conditions are obtained for a certain ratio of the pump and auxiliary field powers when the phases of the interacting waves are locked. Numerical estimates are obtained of the conversion efficiency and interaction length when the active substance is potassium vapor or compressed hydrogen.

Parametric amplification in the field of incoherent light

V. Pyragaitė, A. Stabinis, A. Piskarskas +1 more

A parametric amplification of input signal wave in the field of broadband incoherent light is analyzed at group-velocity matching of pump and idler waves. It is shown that such group-velocity matching is possible both in Type-I and Type-II phase-matching nonlinear crystals. The appropriate conditions at which an evolution of the signal wave in the field of the incoherent pump coincides with an evolution in the field of the monochromatic pump wave are demonstrated. The large parametric gain of the signal wave which is not sensitive to pump fluctuations is feasible in Type-II phase-matching nonlinear crystals.
