Light scattering under conditions of nonstationary electromagnetically induced transparency

Abstract

The propagation of probe radiation pulses in ultracold atomic ensembles is studied theoretically under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency. The pulse 'stopping' process is considered which takes place upon nonadiabatic switching off and subsequent switching on the control field. We analysed the formation of an inverted recovered probe radiation pulse, i.e. the pulse propagating in the direction opposite to the propagation direction before the pulse stopping. Based on this analysis, a scheme is proposed for lidar probing atomic or molecular clouds in which the probe pulse penetrates into a cloud over the specified depth, while information on the cloud state is obtained from the parameters of the inverted pulse. Calculations are performed for an ensemble of 87 Rb atoms.

Electromagnetically induced optical anisotropy of an ultracold atomic medium

V. M. Datsyuk, Igor M. Sokolov, Dmitriy V. Kupriyanov +1 more

We consider radiative transport in ultracold atomic systems under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency. We calculate the macroscopic susceptibility and scattering tensors of the light and show that essential anisotropic optical properties such as dichroism and birefringence naturally appear. In such a case, light propagation through a spatially nonhomogeneous atomic cloud is considered for an arbitrary direction of the probe light. We determine the polarization properties of the coherently transmitted probe light as well as the polarization dependence of light incoherently scattered in an arbitrary direction. Both the steady state regime and time-dependent case are discussed. Concrete calculations are performed for the case of an inhomogeneous and ultracold sample of $^{87}\text{R}\text{b}$ atoms.

Electromagnetically induced transparency and extremely slow light in ultracold atomic gases in traps

A. S. Troshin, N. A. Vasil’ev

For the known, experimentally realized conditions, the detailed analysis of the field-induced transparency and formation of exceptionally low group velocity of probe light is performed. The secondary fields being due to the atomic polarization induced by the two propagating light pulses - coupling (or dressing) and probe ones, resonant to the adjoining transitions in a three-level scheme, are explicitly taken into account. Partly linear (relative to the probe pulse field) and completely non-linear regimes are considered. Particularly, the outputting coupled wave is shown to be slightly amplified, when the probe light pulse “disappears” inside the medium.

Twofold light-pulse regeneration under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency

A. S. Losev, A. S. Troshin

This paper shows that it is theoretically possible for a medium to generate two copies of an incoming probe pulse as a result of the successive action of two control pulses under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency. The medium is treated in the model of two-level atoms with threefold degeneration of the lower level (tripod configuration). The three laser-radiation pulses differ in polarization, and the propagation directions of the probe pulse and the two control pulses are orthogonal. The calculation uses a semiclassical approach, the slow-amplitude approximation, and the fixed-field approximation of the control pulses.

We study the propagation dynamics of a single pair of probe and coupling laser pulses in a three-level cascade atomic medium by numerical solving the Maxwell-Bloch equations for atoms and fields. Influences of the pulse durations, intensity and pulse area of the coupling laser on the probe laser propagation are investigated. We found the conditions that the undistorted probe pulse in such i.e., the effect is established. Under conditions, the ground state population is trapped in a dark state.
