For the known, experimentally realized conditions, the detailed analysis of the field-induced transparency and formation of exceptionally low group velocity of probe light is performed. The secondary fields being due to the atomic polarization induced by the two propagating light pulses - coupling (or dressing) and probe ones, resonant to the adjoining transitions in a three-level scheme, are explicitly taken into account. Partly linear (relative to the probe pulse field) and completely non-linear regimes are considered. Particularly, the outputting coupled wave is shown to be slightly amplified, when the probe light pulse “disappears” inside the medium.

We investigate theoretically the propagation of a probe laser pulse through a cold sample of three-level atoms in the presence of a strong coupling field. Our numerical analysis shows that the electromagnetically induced transparency phenomenon produces very small group velocities for the probe pulse even if the three-level atomic system is open, i.e. in the presence of decay channels to levels not excited by the laser radiation. The role of the atomic momentum on the slow light propagation is briefly discussed.
Abstract We consider propagation of a probe pulse in an atomic medium characterized by a combined tripod and Lambda (Λ) atom-light coupling scheme. The scheme involves three atomic ground states coupled to two excited states by five light fields. It is demonstrated that dark states can be formed for such an atom-light coupling. This is essential for formation of the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and slow light. In the limiting cases the scheme reduces to conventional Λ- or N -type atom-light couplings providing the EIT or absorption, respectively. Thus, the atomic system can experience a transition from the EIT to the absorption by changing the amplitudes or phases of control lasers. Subsequently the scheme is employed to analyze the nonlinear pulse propagation using the coupled Maxwell–Bloch equations. It is shown that a generation of stable slow light optical solitons is possible in such a five-level combined tripod and Λ atomic system.
We study the propagation dynamics of a single pair of probe and coupling laser pulses in a three-level cascade atomic medium by numerical solving the Maxwell-Bloch equations for atoms and fields. Influences of the pulse durations, intensity and pulse area of the coupling laser on the probe laser propagation are investigated. We found the conditions that the undistorted probe pulse in such i.e., the effect is established. Under conditions, the ground state population is trapped in a dark state. We study the propagation of a quantum probe light in an ensemble of 3+1-level atoms when the atoms are coupled to two other classical control fields. First we calculate the dispersion properties, such as susceptibility and group velocity, of the probe light within such an atomic medium under the case of three-photon resonance via the dynamical algebra method of collective atomic excitations. Then we calculate the dispersion of the probe light not only under the case that two classical control fields have the same detunings to the relative atomic transitions but also under the case that they have the different detunings. Our results show in both cases the phenomenon of electromagnetically induced transparency can accur. Especially use the second case, we can find two transparency windows for the probe light.
We describe a Raman scheme where the group velocity of an optical pulse can be altered dramatically. With this none electromagnetically-induced-transparency scheme, we show that when on a two-photon resonance, a light pulse can propagate with extremely slow group velocity. Both pulse narrowing and broadening can occur depending upon the choice of two-photon detuning. When using a tuned far-off two-photon resonance, we show that the pulse propagates ``superluminally'' in the medium with pulse narrowing.
