Twofold light-pulse regeneration under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency

Abstract

This paper shows that it is theoretically possible for a medium to generate two copies of an incoming probe pulse as a result of the successive action of two control pulses under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency. The medium is treated in the model of two-level atoms with threefold degeneration of the lower level (tripod configuration). The three laser-radiation pulses differ in polarization, and the propagation directions of the probe pulse and the two control pulses are orthogonal. The calculation uses a semiclassical approach, the slow-amplitude approximation, and the fixed-field approximation of the control pulses.

Variants of controlling light pulses under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency with energy degeneracy

A. S. Losev, A. S. Troshin

The interaction of signal and control fields with an extended medium of two-level atoms with degenerate energy levels is considered in the semiclassical approximation. The effects of recording, storing, and release of signal pulses are studied for several schemes under the conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency. The possibility of inverting the succession of the reconstructed pulses is shown.

Electromagnetically induced transparency and nonlinear pulse propagation in a combined tripod and Λ atom-light coupling scheme

Hamid Reza Hamedi, J Ruseckas, Gediminas Juzeliūnas

Abstract We consider propagation of a probe pulse in an atomic medium characterized by a combined tripod and Lambda (Λ) atom-light coupling scheme. The scheme involves three atomic ground states coupled to two excited states by five light fields. It is demonstrated that dark states can be formed for such an atom-light coupling. This is essential for formation of the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and slow light. In the limiting cases the scheme reduces to conventional Λ- or N -type atom-light couplings providing the EIT or absorption, respectively. Thus, the atomic system can experience a transition from the EIT to the absorption by changing the amplitudes or phases of control lasers. Subsequently the scheme is employed to analyze the nonlinear pulse propagation using the coupled Maxwell–Bloch equations. It is shown that a generation of stable slow light optical solitons is possible in such a five-level combined tripod and Λ atomic system.

Pulse propagation in a dressed, degenerate system

Z. Kis, G. Demeter, Josef Janszky

We study the propagation of coherent light pulses in a medium of three-level atoms with degenerate ground- and excited-state sublevels in an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-type configuration. Both the strong control field and the weak probe pulse have elliptical polarization, which gives rise to concurrent multipath couplings between the ground-state sublevels and the auxiliary stable state. We derive the probe field susceptibility and show that in general, the probe field propagates in two separate polarization modes, one of which is attenuated, the other of which displays EIT. This generic result is valid provided the atomic medium is prepared to be in a pure quantum state over the ground-state sublevels initially. We also investigate the case when the initial state of the medium is described by an incoherent mixture of ground-state sublevels and show how EIT-like pulse propagation degrades. The possibility of controlling the probe susceptibility matrix with control field polarization provides a convenient tool for probing the quantum state of the medium on the degenerate ground-state sublevels.

Slow and fast light propagation through ladder-type atomic media with degenerate energy levels

Nikola Filipovic, Vladan Pavlovic, Ljiljana Stevanović

We investigate the weak probe pulse propagation through the atomic medium, in the presence of the strong control laser field, under the regime of the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). These fields couple to the medium by forming the 3-level ladder configuration. We focus on two distinct cases: closed system, which is a non-degenerate, and open system, where the middle level is 3-fold degenerate, and the additional levels are coupled to the other levels only via spontaneous emission. The spatio-temporal profile of the probe pulse envelope is obtained by using the formalism of Maxwell-Bloch equations with the help of the Fourier transform method. We study the influence of the control field Rabi frequency, the spectral half-width of the initial pulse and decay rates on the propagation of the probe pulse. Several important pulse parameters are also calculated and discussed. It is shown that the group velocity of light can be controlled in such a manner that one can switch from slow to fast light and vice versa when changing the control Rabi frequency and spectral pulse half-width. Moreover, the possibility of replacing the open with an effective closed system is also discussed.

Interference effects in light propagation in a three-level atomic medium in the loop configuration

Jakub Korociński, Andrzej Raczyński, Jarosław Zaremba +1 more

A strong control field coupling two empty states of a lambda system makes the medium transparent for a probe pulse. This phenomenon known as electromagnetically induced transparency is here modified by switching a weak microwave field coupling two lower states of the system. As a response to the control and microwave fields, the medium itself acts as a source of an electromagnetic wave which interferes with the incoming pulse. The properties of the net pulse leaving the sample, in particular its magnitude and multipeak shape, will be analyzed in detail, depending on the model parameters.

Propagation of a laser pulse in a three-level cascade atomic medium under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency

Minh Dong Hoang, Van Doai Le, Ngoc Sau Vu +2 more

We study the propagation dynamics of a single pair of probe and coupling laser pulses in a three-level cascade atomic medium by numerical solving the Maxwell-Bloch equations for atoms and fields. Influences of the pulse durations, intensity and pulse area of the coupling laser on the probe laser propagation are investigated. We found the conditions that the undistorted probe pulse in such i.e., the effect is established. Under conditions, the ground state population is trapped in a dark state.
