Analysis of quantum noise in a singly resonant nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator

Abstract

We have analyzed the evolution of quantum operators in a three-wave mixing process by using the nonlinear polarization driven wave equations and linearization of the quantum operators. We have theoretically shown that a nondegenerate optical parametric amplifier can generate amplitude-squeezed light when operated in the backconversion regime. Furthermore, a nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator, where only the signal wave is resonant, is proved to generate amplitude-squeezed light when the pump intensity is above the value at which 100% photon conversion efficiency is achieved. The calculated limit for amplitude-squeezing in this case is 3 d B.

Squeezed amplification in a nondegenerate parametric amplifier

N. C. Wong

A linearized quantum analysis of an injection-seeded optical parametric amplifier is presented. When the amplifier is operated in a saturated gain regime, the amplified output intensity of the injected coherent-state signal becomes amplitude squeezed, and the signal-to-noise ratio improves. Above threshold, an injection-seeded parametric oscillator is found to generate more single-beam squeezing than an unseeded one. An amplitudesqueezed pump is shown to yield even better results.

Characteristics of bright-squeezed light produced in a below-threshold optical parametric oscillator

E G Lariontsev, I I Zolotoverkh

We perform a theoretical analysis of steady-state solutions and quantum noise in a below-threshold optical parametric oscillator (OPO) operating as an amplifier with an input seed wave. Both the amplitude-squeezed and phase-squeezed states of the output field are considered. We take into account the intracavity nonlinear losses due to intracavity frequency doubling of the signal wave and the quantum fluctuations of the seed and pump waves. Unlike the preceding theoretical studies of the problem, we show that squeezing in bright beams produced by the OPO depends on their intensity. For the amplitude-squeezed state, squeezing strongly degrades with increasing output intensity. In contrast, one can obtain good squeezing for phase-squeezed beams of high output intensity.

Generation and amplification of number states by nondegenerate parametric oscillators with idler-measurement feedback

Gunnar G. Bjork, Y. Yamamoto

Noise spectra of the in-phase and quadrature-phase components of the signal and idler fields of a nondegenerate optical parametric amplifier are calculated. It is shown that, as is suggested by the operator Manley-Rowe relations, the external in-phase (amplitude) fluctuations of the signal and idler fields are correlated in the frequency region lower than the signal and idler cavity bandwidths. If the idler photon flux is continuously measured and the photocurrent fluctuations are fed back to control the pump intensity, the signal output will feature an amplitude noise spectral density reduced to below the standard quantum limit (amplitude squeezing) in the frequency region below the feedback loop and signal and idler cavity bandwidths. An all-optical realization of such a negative-feedback parametric oscillator is presented. It is also shown that a nondegenerate parametric amplifier with idler measurement feedback can add a fixed number of photons to a photon-number state.

Squeezed amplification in a gain-saturated parametric amplifier

N. C. Wong, Ke-Xun Sun, Jeffrey H. Shapiro

Recently optical parametric amplifiers (OPAs) with vacuum inputs have been extensively studied and shown to generate a significant amount of squeezing, but little is known about the quantum noise behavior of an OPA with an injected signal field. We have performed a linearized quantum analysis of a nondegenerate OPA operated in the saturated gain regime showing that the amplified output intensity of a coherent-state input signal becomes squeezed when the classical small-signal gain falls below unity. In uses such as master-oscillator power amplifiers, for which the signal of interest is the mean output intensity, the output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) can be higher than the input SNR over a broad operating range. For an OPA pumped at 90% of threshold, the SNR improvement is about a factor of 3, and with a 10-Db amplitude squeezed pump, the improvement increases to about a factor of 7. Such a tunable gain-saturated OPA with large-signal gain and improved SNR can be potentially useful in digital communication.

Quantum noise and squeezing in an optical parametric oscillator with arbitrary output-mirror coupling. III. Effect of pump amplitude and phase fluctuations

Sudhakar Prasad

Quantum fluctuations and squeezing of the signal field generated by a degenerate optical parametric oscillator are sensitive to the phase and amplitude fluctuations of the second-harmonic pump. The analysis reported here extends our previous calculations for a perfectly monochromatic noise-free pump to allow for finite pump amplitude and phase fluctuations. We treat the typically intense pump field with its fluctuations as a classical Gaussian stochastic process in two limits: first, when the pump has amplitude fluctuations but its phase is fixed and second, when its phase diffuses but its amplitude is fixed. Since pump amplitude noise affects the evolution of the signal field multiplicatively, it has a lesser impact on the quantum fluctuations of the signal than pump phase diffusion which compromises such fluctuations via the extreme phase sensitivity of the parametric amplification process. For the latter limit, our calculations extend the work of Gea-Banacloche and Zubairy [Phys. Rev. A 42, 1742 (1990)] to cavities with arbitrary transmission coefficients for the bounding mirrors.

Quantum Noise Correlations of an Optical Parametric Oscillator Based on a Nondegenerate Four Wave Mixing Process in Hot Alkali Atoms

We present the first measurement of two-mode squeezing between the twin beams produced by a doubly resonant optical parameter oscillator (OPO) in an above threshold operation based on parametric amplification by nondegenerate four wave mixing with rubidium (^{85}Rb). We demonstrate a maximum intensity difference squeezing of -2.7 dB (-3.5 dB corrected for losses) with a pump power of 285 mW and an output power of 12 mW for each beam, operating close to the D1 line of Rb atoms. The use of open cavities combined with the high gain media can provide a strong level of noise compression and the access to new operation regimes that could not be explored by crystal based OPOs. The spectral bandwidth of the squeezed light is broadened by the cavity dynamics, and the squeezing level is robust for strong pump powers. Stable operation was obtained up to 4 times above the threshold. Moreover, operation of the OPO close to the atomic resonances of alkali atoms allows a natural integration into quantum networks, including structures such as quantum memories.
