Abstract

We present the first measurement of two-mode squeezing between the twin beams produced by a doubly resonant optical parameter oscillator (OPO) in an above threshold operation based on parametric amplification by nondegenerate four wave mixing with rubidium (^{85}Rb). We demonstrate a maximum intensity difference squeezing of -2.7 dB (-3.5 dB corrected for losses) with a pump power of 285 mW and an output power of 12 mW for each beam, operating close to the D1 line of Rb atoms. The use of open cavities combined with the high gain media can provide a strong level of noise compression and the access to new operation regimes that could not be explored by crystal based OPOs. The spectral bandwidth of the squeezed light is broadened by the cavity dynamics, and the squeezing level is robust for strong pump powers. Stable operation was obtained up to 4 times above the threshold. Moreover, operation of the OPO close to the atomic resonances of alkali atoms allows a natural integration into quantum networks, including structures such as quantum memories.

Continuous Variable Entanglement in an Optical Parametric Oscillator Based on a Nondegenerate Four Wave Mixing Process in Hot Alkali Atoms

We present the measurement of entanglement between twin beams generated with a doubly resonant optical parameter oscillator (OPO) based on four-wave mixing in hot ^{85}Rb vapor above threshold. This is the first measurement of entanglement in an OPO with a χ^{(3)} media above threshold. We reconstruct the covariance matrix for several configurations and based on a full picture of the four side band mode state, we study entanglement between all possible bipartitions. We show a robust generation of entanglement with stronger generation for a specific pair of modes. For this system, we show that atomic density is a determinant factor for the generation and loss of quantum correlations. The generation of entangled fields with an atomic OPO operating close to atomic resonance of alkali atoms enables a natural integration into quantum networks.

Single-beam noise characteristics of quantum correlated twin beams

Yun Zhangx, Katsuyuki Kasai, Kazuhiro Hayasaka

We investigated the intensity noise spectra of the single beam of a pump-enhanced continuous-wave (cw) optical parametric oscillator (OPO), which was used to generate quantum correlated twin beams, as a function of the pump power. With a triply (pump-, signal-, and idler-) resonant cavity, the oscillation threshold of our OPO was about 8.5+/-1.3 mW and the measured slope conversion efficiency was 0.72+/-0.02. A twin beams with power of 240 mW were generated at pump power of 350 mW. The relaxation oscillation frequencies, which depend on the pump power, were observed when the pump power of OPO was from 12.5 mW to 28 mW. The experimental results confirm the predicted increase in OPO relaxation frequency with pump power. Squeezing of the single beam intensity was for the first time inferred experimentally by exploiting nature of quantum noise dependent on loss.

We experimentally inferred squeezing of the single-beam intensity, for the first time to our knowledge, by exploiting the nature of quantum noise that is dependent on loss.

Experimental investigation of intensity difference squeezing using Nd:YAP laser as pump source

Qing Pan, Yun Zhang, Tiancai Zhang +2 more

A strong quantum correlation between twin-beams at wavelength was observed. The intensity difference noise of twin-beams, which is generated by a semimonolithic OPO cavity pumped by a frequency-doubled and stabilized Nd:YAP laser, is about 80% (7 dB) below the short noise limit at the measurement frequency of 1.5 MHz. The threshold of the optical parametric oscillator is about 20 mW. The parametric dependence of the quantum correlation is experimentally investigated. The experimental results agree with the theory well.

Nonclassical light generation from an optical parametric oscillator pumped by a frequency-doubled diode laser

Kazuhiro Hayasaka, Yun Zhang, Katsuyuki Kasai

Quantum-correlated twin beams were successfully generated from an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) pumped by a frequency-doubled diode laser. The 50-mW diode laser output at 1080 nm was first converted to 22.5-mW green light, and then was used to pump an OPO to yield signal and idler beams with a total power of 5 mW. Noise reduction of 4.3 dB below the shot-noise level was observed in the intensity-difference spectrum. The setup opens a simple way to a compact and low-cost source of diverse nonclassical states of light.

A Compact Source for Quantum Image Processing with Four-wave Mixing in Rubidium-85

Ulrich Vogl, Ryan T. Glasser, Paul D. Lett

We have built a compact light source for bright squeezed twin-beams at 795\,nm based on four-wave-mixing in atomic $^{85}$Rb vapor. With a total optical power of 400\,mW derived from a free running diode laser and a tapered amplifier to pump the four-wave-mixing process, we achieve 2.1\,dB intensity difference squeezing of the twin beams below the standard quantum limit, without accounting for losses. Squeezed twin beams generated by the type of source presented here could be used as reference for the precise calibration of photodetectors. Transferring the quantum correlations from the light to atoms in order to generate correlated atom beams is another interesting prospect. In this work we investigate the dispersion that is generated by the employed four-wave-mixing process with respect to bandwidth and dependence on probe detuning. We are currently using this squeezed light source to test the transfer of spatial information and quantum correlations through media of anomalous dispersion.
