Generalized coherent states for electrons in external fields and application to potential scattering

Abstract

By continuing earlier investigations, generalized coherent states are introduced to describe the quasiclassical motion of electrons in a microwave and in a homogeneous magnetic field. The microwave is circularly polarized and propagates along the direction of the magnetic field. In view of possible applications to laboratory plasmas, the problem is treated nonrelativistically and the microwave is taken in the dipole approximation. The generalized coherent states emerge in polar coordinates (\ensuremath{\rho},\ensuremath{\varphi}) from ordinary Landau states \ensuremath{\Vert}l,m> by an appropriate choice of unitary and displacement operations. These coherent states are shown to form a complete and orthonormal set. Consequently, these states may be conveniently used for the description of scattering processes. As an example, scattering of electrons by a screened Coulomb potential is considered in the presence of the above two external fields. For simplicity, the scattering potential is treated in the first-order Born approximation. The quasiclassical features of the corresponding cross sections for the induced nonlinear processes are discussed.

Nonrelativistic particle in a homogeneous magnetic field was taken as an example to illustrate the general structure of quasiclassical trajectory - coherent states. Relation of these states (representing exact solutions in the case of quadratic nonrelativistic quantum systems) with widely known coherent and correlated coherent states was established.

Scattering of light by an electron in the presence of a magnetic field and a strong microwave field

Sándor Varró, F. Ehlotzky, János A. Bergou

Scattering of light by an electron embedded simultaneously in a uniform magnetic field and in a microwave field is first analysed within the framework of classical electrodynamics. It is shown that the intensities of the different components of the scattered light can be increased by the presence of the magnetic field. Then coherent quantum states of the electron in the same field configuration are constructed and are applied to the description of the scattering process using semiclassical methods. The results of the classical and semiclassical calculations are compared and discussed and various limiting cases are considered to show the connection with previously published work.

Generalized coherent states and spin systems

V G Makhankov, Máximo Augusto Agüero Granados, A V Makhankov

Generalized Coherent States (GCS) are constructed (and discussed) in order to study quasiclassical behaviour of quantum spin models of the Heisenberg type. Several such models are taken to their semiclassical limits, whose form depends on the spin value as well as the Hamiltonian symmetry. In the continuum approximation, SU(2)/U(1) GCS when applied give rise to the well known Landau - Lifshitz classical phenomenology. For arbitrary spin values one obtains a lattice of coupled nonlinear oscillators. Corresponding classical continuum models are described as well.

Generalized coherent states for the Coulomb problem in one dimension

S. Nouri

A set of generalized coherent states for the one-dimensional Coulomb problem in coordinate representation is constructed. At first, we obtain a mapping for proper transformation of the one-dimensional Coulomb problem into a nonrotating four-dimensional isotropic harmonic oscillator in the hyperspherical space, and the generalized coherent states for the one-dimensional Coulomb problem is then obtained in exact closed form. This exactly soluble model can provide an adequate means for a quantum coherency description of the Coulomb problem in one dimension, sample for coherent aspects of the exciton model in one-dimension example in high-temperature superconductivity, semiconductors, and polymers. Also, it can be useful for investigating the coherent scattering of the Coulomb particles in one dimension.

Quasiclassical trajectory-coherent states of a particle in an arbitrary electromagnetic field

Vladislav G. Bagrov, Владимир Владимирович Белов, I. M. Ternov

In this paper we show that for a nonrelativistic charged particle moving in an arbitrary external electromagnetic field there exist approximate solutions of the Schrödinger equation, such that the quantum-mechanical averages of the coordinates and the momenta with respect to these states are general exact solutions of the classical Hamiltonian equations. Such states are called trajectory-coherent states. The wave functions of the trajectory-coherent states are obtained by the complex germ method by V. P. Maslov. The simplest properties of these states are studied.

Coherent phase control in electron scattering by hydrogen atoms in a bichromatic laser field

Aurelia Cionga, F. Ehlotzky, Gabriela Buică

We consider electron scattering by hydrogen atoms in a bichromatic linearly polarized laser field of frequencies ω and 3ω and we discuss the coherent control of the scattering process as a function of the relative phase φ between the two components of the radiation field. The electrons are assumed to have sufficiently high energies in order to permit the description of the scattering process in the first-order Born approximation. The scattered electrons, embedded in the bichromatic laser field of moderate power, as well as the laser dressing of the hydrogen atoms in their ground state are described by time-dependent perturbation theory. We discuss the angular dependence of the nonlinear differential scattering cross sections for the low values N = ±2 of absorbed or emitted laser photons as a function of the relative phase φ between the two radiation field components. We also compare our results with those obtained from the assumption of a static potential describing the target atom.
