Abstract

We consider electron scattering by hydrogen atoms in a bichromatic linearly polarized laser field of frequencies ω and 3ω and we discuss the coherent control of the scattering process as a function of the relative phase φ between the two components of the radiation field. The electrons are assumed to have sufficiently high energies in order to permit the description of the scattering process in the first-order Born approximation. The scattered electrons, embedded in the bichromatic laser field of moderate power, as well as the laser dressing of the hydrogen atoms in their ground state are described by time-dependent perturbation theory. We discuss the angular dependence of the nonlinear differential scattering cross sections for the low values N = ±2 of absorbed or emitted laser photons as a function of the relative phase φ between the two radiation field components. We also compare our results with those obtained from the assumption of a static potential describing the target atom.

Effect of target dressing in free - free transitions in a bichromatic laser field

Sándor Varró, F. Ehlotzky

The influence of laser dressing of the atomic target on free - free transitions in a bichromatic laser field of variable relative phase is investigated. For simplicity, hydrogen is taken as target atom and only the elastic, non-resonant case is considered. Exchange effects are neglected and the scattering process is treated to the lowest-order Born approximation. It is found that at very small scattering angles the dressing effects have some influence on the phase dependence of the scattering cross sections in a bichromatic field.

Two-photon laser-assisted electron scattering on hydrogen atom

A. S. Kornev, B. A. Zon

Abstract We considered the influence of light-dressed-atom effect on two-photon laser-assisted electron-atom scattering in the Born approximation. We performed calculations for the ground state of a Hydrogen atom. We demonstrated that for small scattering angles, the main contribution to the cross section is made by the combined process, when one of the photons is absorbed by the atomic electron and the second one by the scattered electron. However, in the UV region, when two-photon resonances with highly excited atomic states arise, the main contribution to the cross section is determined by the inverse polarization Bremsstrahlung absorption.

Photoelectric effect in the presence of a bichromatic laser field

Liang Bai, Wen-Yuan Du, Shu-Min Li +1 more

Photoelectric effect in atomic hydrogen in the presence of bichromatic laser fields composed of a fundamental frequency and its second or third harmonics is investigated. The expression of the S-matrix for the laser-assisted photoelectric effect is derived in the length gauge, which can simplify the elements of the matrix. A general dressed wavefunction of the atom is derived in perturbation theory. The continuum state of the ejected electron is described by a Coulomb–Volkov wavefunction. Numerical results of photoionization cross section for the distinct second component are obtained and compared with the monochromatic field dressing case. It is shown that the photoionization cross section is modified notably by introducing the second component of field, especially when the colliding system absorbs or emits a considerable number of laser photons.

Electron scattering from atoms in the presence of a laser field. II

Marvin H. Mittleman

In the first paper of this series a formal theory of atomic scattering of electrons in the presence of an intense electromagnetic field was given. Cross sections, near the forward direction, between atomic states (modified by the laser) were obtained. However, it was assumed that the atom could not emit spontaneous radiation. In this paper the effect of spontaneous radiation is included, and it is shown that in most cases the measured cross section will be a weighted average of the two different cross sections starting from the two different initial states which are those atomic states resonantly linked by the laser. The Born approximation for the scattering is obtained, and it is shown that for the simplest description of the spontaneous radiation field the effect of the laser on the cross sections is simply to multiply them by a factor which depends upon the laser detuning.

Dependence on relative phase for bichromatically driven atoms

Peter M. Koch, S. A. Zelazny, Leszek Sirko

We consider the interaction of atoms with a pulse of a linearly polarized electric field consisting of two phase-locked frequencies whose ratio ω H /ω L is the ratio of arbitrary integers h / l , with h > l . If the electric amplitudes vary in time, they do so with the same slow envelope. The relative phase can be used as a control parameter via variation of the phase ϕ H of ω H or ϕ L of ω L . We derive the physically important ranges of relative phase for total-yield processes as a function of h : l ; they depend on whether h , l are both odd or only one is odd. We tabulate a variety of relevant phase-dependent results for all h : l from 2:1 through 8:7. We use calculations and experimental data for helium and hydrogen Rydberg atoms driven by a bichromatic microwave field to confirm the physically important ranges of ϕ H and ϕ L for a few h : l ratios. Two experimental examples taken from the literature for the interactions of atoms with sub-picosecond, bichromatic laser pulses also confirm our conclusions.
