Abstract

Photoelectric effect in atomic hydrogen in the presence of bichromatic laser fields composed of a fundamental frequency and its second or third harmonics is investigated. The expression of the S-matrix for the laser-assisted photoelectric effect is derived in the length gauge, which can simplify the elements of the matrix. A general dressed wavefunction of the atom is derived in perturbation theory. The continuum state of the ejected electron is described by a Coulomb–Volkov wavefunction. Numerical results of photoionization cross section for the distinct second component are obtained and compared with the monochromatic field dressing case. It is shown that the photoionization cross section is modified notably by introducing the second component of field, especially when the colliding system absorbs or emits a considerable number of laser photons.

Coherent phase control in electron scattering by hydrogen atoms in a bichromatic laser field

Aurelia Cionga, F. Ehlotzky, Gabriela Buică

We consider electron scattering by hydrogen atoms in a bichromatic linearly polarized laser field of frequencies ω and 3ω and we discuss the coherent control of the scattering process as a function of the relative phase φ between the two components of the radiation field. The electrons are assumed to have sufficiently high energies in order to permit the description of the scattering process in the first-order Born approximation. The scattered electrons, embedded in the bichromatic laser field of moderate power, as well as the laser dressing of the hydrogen atoms in their ground state are described by time-dependent perturbation theory. We discuss the angular dependence of the nonlinear differential scattering cross sections for the low values N = ±2 of absorbed or emitted laser photons as a function of the relative phase φ between the two radiation field components. We also compare our results with those obtained from the assumption of a static potential describing the target atom.

Target dressing effects in laser-assisted x-ray photoionization

Aurelia Cionga, Viorica Florescu, A. Maquet +1 more

X-ray photoionization of hydrogen in the presence of a low-frequency laser field is studied using an approach which partially takes into account the radiative stimulated corrections to both bound and continuum states. Special attention is paid to the cases in which one low-frequency photon is exchanged (absorbed or emitted) between the atomic system and the laser field. It is demonstrated that atomic ``dressing'' effects are important close to the ionization threshold.

On angular coherent control of photocurrent caused by photoionization in a bichromatic laser field

V A Pazdzersky, V I Usachenko, A V Ushnurtsev

A novel kind of coherent control of various atomic and molecular photoprocesses proceeding in a bichromatic electromagnetic (EM) laser field, angular coherent control , is proposed and demonstrated here theoretically by studying the particular case of negative-ion photodetachment in the field of a linearly polarized fundamental laser frequency and its second harmonic of arbitrary spatial configuration and orientation of the unit polarization vectors e 1 and e 2 of the respective harmonic fields. Due to the inherent spatial asymmetry of the applied bichromatic field, the ejection of detached photoelectrons is also generally asymmetric in respect of the detached photoelectron momentum replacement p →- p . As follows from our gauge-invariant analytical calculations within the framework of perturbation theory on EM interaction and a zero-range potential model for the negative ion, this field asymmetry results in a photocurrent, the magnitude and direction of which are strongly dependent on both the relative phase shift Φ between the harmonics of the ionizing bichromatic field and on the angle θ between the polarization vectors e 1 and e 2 . The latter strong dependence on the angle θ is the background for angular control of the direction and magnitude of the produced photocurrent by means of an appropriate choice and proper adjustment of the angle between the polarization vectors of the incident bichromatic field harmonics.

Circular dichroism in hydrogen multiphoton ionization by a bichromatic field of frequencies ω and 3ω

Magda Fifirig, Aurelia Cionga

The dichroic effects in the multiphoton ionization of the ground state hydrogen atom by a coherent superposition of a laser beam and its third harmonic, are studied via perturbative calculations. The final state of the photoelectrons, which has the energy E = E 1 + 3ℏω ( E 1 the ground state energy and ω the laser frequency), is reached by two interfering quantum paths: (a) absorption of one harmonic photon and (b) absorption of three laser photons. In the chosen regime of field intensities, the radiative corrections to the absorption of one harmonic photon may be disregarded. Our numerical results illustrate the influence of the laser frequency, of the relative intensity and of the harmonic phase upon the dichroic signal.

Effect of target dressing in free - free transitions in a bichromatic laser field

Sándor Varró, F. Ehlotzky

The influence of laser dressing of the atomic target on free - free transitions in a bichromatic laser field of variable relative phase is investigated. For simplicity, hydrogen is taken as target atom and only the elastic, non-resonant case is considered. Exchange effects are neglected and the scattering process is treated to the lowest-order Born approximation. It is found that at very small scattering angles the dressing effects have some influence on the phase dependence of the scattering cross sections in a bichromatic field.

Two-photon laser-assisted electron scattering on Hydrogen atom

A. S. Kornev, B. A. Zon

Synopsis We considered the influence of light-dressed-atom effect on two-photon laser-assisted electron-atom scattering in the Born approximation. We performed calculations for the ground state of a Hydrogen atom. For small scattering angles, the main contribution to the cross section is made by the combined process, when one of the photons is absorbed by the atomic electron and the second one by the scattered electron. However, in the UV region, when two-photon resonances with highly excited atomic states arise, the main contribution is determined by the inverse polarization Bremsstrahlung absorption.
