Abstract

Nonlinear resonances in a quadrupole trap using laser induced fluorescence (LIF) were studied in Nd and Pr for the first time. Two type ofresonances have been recorded : pure coupling resonances and resonances along the trap axis. The relevant parameters of these resonances have been determined.

Modulation of LIF emitted by trapped ions by variation of trapping potential

A. Walaszyk, A. Buczek, Wojciech Koczorowski +3 more

In laser induced fluorescence signal of Pr+ ions stored in a Paul trap an effect of intensity modulation with scanning of the operating point along a axis has been observed. So far only initial results are available and unequivocal interpretation of this effect cannot be given yet but it is most likely concerned with some collective behavior of the ion cloud.

Reconstruction of the Quantum Mechanical State of a Trapped Ion

Sascha Wallentowitz, W. Vogel

It is shown that the full information on the quantum state of the vibrational center-of-mass motion of a trapped ion can be transferred to its electronic dynamics by appropriately irradiating a long-living (e.g., quadrupole) electronic transition by laser light. This allows us to determine the quantum mechanical state of the ion with high quantum efficiency by probing a strong (dipole) transition for the appearance of resonance fluorescence.

Observation of Pr+Ions in Paul Trap

Jerzy Dembczyński, Danuta Stefańska, Gustaw Szawioła +11 more

The first observation of Pr+ ions stored in a Paul trap is reported.Initially the ions were observed by the electronic detection method, and further the laser induced fluorescence, following resonance absorption at a certain optical transition in Pr+ ion, which is excited from the ground state, was recorded. Moreover, fluorescence signal following the excitation from a low-lying metastable state could be detected. The Paul trap system and some other parts of tle experimental setup were constructed within the frame of this work and thus are briefly described in the present contribution.PACS numbers: 32.80.Pj of the equipment of the laser-spectroscopic laboratory to our group, and for having partially involved one of the authors (D.S.) in the experiments in the Paul trap, particularly with HΣ+ ions. Many valuable hints concerning the practical aspects of the experiments in the Paul trap are also deeply appreciated.

The dynamics of laser cooled ions in a quadrupole ion trap

Kishan Dholakia

This thesis describes experimental work performed on laser cooled magnesium ions, confined in a quadrupole ion trap operating in the Penning or the combined mode. Information is gained about the dynamical motion of the ions. This is done by analyzing the time delays between scattered fluorescence photons in the case of small ion clouds (generally less than ten ions). For larger clouds (upwards of 100 ions), a fraction of the ions is "tagged" and a subsequent study made of the time evolution of the fluorescence. We have developed an innovative, non-invasive method for measuring ion oscillation frequencies which is based on analyzing photon-photon correlations present in the emitted ion fluorescence. This technique has been used to measure all three Penning trap frequencies for a wide range of dc voltage. The data have been fitted to theory and we have obtained a global fit of these data to one set of trap parameters. We also demonstrate that our technique enables us to measure space-charge shifted values of the trap resonances. This method has also been applied to the combined trap and we report experimental verification of the predicted trap resonances for a wide range of trapping parameters. These data fit well to theory. This is for all three oscillation frequencies for one set of trap parameters consistent with the data for the Penning trap. \nFurther experiments are reported concerned with the dynamics of larger ion clouds in a Penning trap. A pulsed laser is used to "tag" a small number of the ions in large ion clouds. This removes those ions from the cooling cycle by placing them in a metastable state. Subsequently, we have monitored the time evolution of the fluorescence. By analyzing these data we have been able to determine cloud rotation frequencies for large ensembles of ions.

Optical Detection of Ions Confined in a rf Quadrupole Trap

Reinhard Iffländer, Günther Werth

The observation of D1-fluorescence light from trapped Ba + ions, using a pulsed tunable dye laser as a light source, leads to a sensitive detection of the confined particles. In preparation of an ODR-experiment to determine the ground state hyperfine splitting of the odd isotopes we found the optimum operating point of the trap and measured the average ion energy.

Sympathetic cooling of trapped ions with resonant laser radiation

T. Shimizu, Yoshio Oshima, Yoshiki Moriwaki +1 more

We propose a novel model to describe dynamic properties of ions that are cooled by collisions with other laser-cooled ions in a quadrupole rf trap. The limit temperature of the sympathetic Cooling is estimated as functions of the trap and laser parameters, and the mass of the ions.
