BCS states as squeezed fermion-pair states

Abstract

A new formulation of the Bogoliubov-Valatin transformation explicitly parameter-dependent and with no quasiparticle operators is derived and applied to a diagonalization of the BCS reduced Hamiltonian in the particle space. It is shown that the eigenstates of this Hamiltonian are just the BCS states and are a kind of squeezed fermion-pair states as well.

Diagonalization of the generalized squeeze operators and the generalized squeezed number states

W S Liu, Paolo Tombesi

The generalized single-mode and two-mode squeeze operators are diagonalized by employing Bogolyubov and Bogolyubov-Valatin transformations, and the unitary operators performing these transformations are derived. The authors find that the eigenvalues are complex exponential functions with the exponential factors of harmonic-oscillator spectra and the eigenstates are a new kind of squeezed number state different from the ordinary squeezed number states.

On the Bogoliubov-Valatin transformation for fermionic Hamiltonians without a linear part

Davide Bonaretti

A self-contained treatment of the Bogoliubov-Valatin transformation for homogeneous fermionic Hamiltonians is presented. The aim is to provide a quick reference that may also serve as supplementary material for a graduate-level course, and that can be understood with quantum mechanics knowledge up to the level of the second quantization's rules. The objective of the transformation is to cast a quadratic Hamiltonian into a diagonal form that resembles the Hamiltonian of a system of non-interacting particles. To obtain this, the first step consists in putting its coefficient matrix into its canonical form; the transformation can always be performed on fermionic Hamiltonians, only some care must be taken when this form is singular. Having explained how to cast a general matrix into its standard form, a complete description of the transformation is provided; a novel procedure is proposed here for the singular matrix case.

New Transformation for Treating Pair Correlation and Microscopic Foundation of Interacting Boson Model

Yang Li-ming

For strongly pair-correlated systems, a new transformation is derived similar in form to the usual Bogoliubov-Valatin transformation, but with the transformation coefficients replaced by operators. The original fermion operators are now replaced by two sets of independent operators, the pair operators and the quasi-fermions . The transformation conserves the particle number. Among other applications, it is particularly suited for the construction of a microscopic theory of the type of the interacting boson model. The new transformation given here also serves to provide a connection between the usual ph picture of a phonon and the pp picture-of bosons in IBM. However, the boson picture that evolves from the present formulation differs from the ideal boson picture in IBM..

On the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer(BCS) Hamiltonian

MI Umo

We present a detailed diagonalization calculation of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) Hamiltonian via the unitary transformation method which allows for the Bogolyubov-Valatin transformation to be arrived at naturally. The energy gap equation is derived and solved, and averages of some representative thermodynamic quantities are obtained.KEYWORDS: Hamiltonian, unitary matrix, superconductivity, interaction, ground state.

Spectrum of the BCS Reduced Hamiltonian in the Theory of Superconductivity

Yusuke S. Kato

The spectrum and eigenstates of Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer's reduced Hamiltonian in the theory of superconductivity are investigated in a mathematically rigorous manner. The Hamiltonian is defined first for a finite number of electrons contained in a finite volume. The interaction Hamiltonian is assumed to take a simple form. The Hamiltonian after the Bogoliubov transformation (transformed Hamiltonian) has a limit in the weak topology of Hilbert space when the volume tends to infinity with the number density of electrons kept constant. In the limit the interaction part vanishes and the free part gives a continuous excitation spectrum of Bogolons (transformed electrons). It should be noticed that the operator norm of the former does not tend to zero and has no strong limit as well as the total Hamilton. An equivalent boson which consists of two Bogolons with opposite momenta and spins is introduced. In the Fock space for the bosons the Hamiltonian has a strong limit for infinite volume. The limit operator has the same excitation spectrum of Bogolons as the free Hamiltonian and the existence of the lower limit of the spectrum is shown for some special class of the interactions. For large volume the limit operator is a good approximation to be transformed Hamiltonian. The ground state of the free part of the transformed Hamiltonian (i.e. the ground state of Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer's calculation) is not the exact eigenstate of the transformed total Hamiltonian and the difference does not vanish when the volume tends to infinity.

Remarks on the Bogoliubov-Valatin transformation

W.S. Liu

A mistake in the new formulation of the Bogoliubov-Valatin transformation [W.S. Liu, X.P. Li, Eur. Phys. J. D 2, 1 (1998)] is pointed out and an exact formulation is reconstructed by using the disentangling technique for matrices.
