Spontaneous symmetry breaking in the Lieb-Mattis model of antiferromagnetism

Abstract

We calculate the order parameter m in the infinite-range isotropic-interaction quantum model of antiferromagnetism due to Lieb and Mattis (LM). The Hamiltonian ${\mathit{H}}_{1}$ in this model contains pure Heisenberg interactions. m is the mean value of the z component ${\mathit{m}}_{\mathit{s}}^{\mathit{z}}$ of the staggered spin per particle ${\mathbf{m}}_{\mathit{s}}$ in the ground state of ${\mathit{H}}_{1}$ plus a symmetry-breaking term ${\mathit{H}}_{\mathit{B}}$ due to an infinitesimal staggered field B in the thermodynamic limit (TL). We find a value of \ensuremath{\surd}3 for the ratio r=m/${\mathit{m}}_{0}$, ${\mathit{m}}_{0}$ being the root-mean-square value of ${\mathit{m}}_{\mathit{s}}^{\mathit{z}}$ for B==0 in the TL. m and ${\mathit{m}}_{0}$ measure, respectively, the spontaneous symmetry breaking and the amount of long-range order in the symmetry-unbroken state. This value is expected on the basis of our recent argument that r= \ensuremath{\surd}3 if ${\mathbf{m}}_{\mathit{s}}$ behaves in the TL as a classical vector with no magnitude fluctuations---behavior that we show holds for the Lieb-Mattis model. The addition to ${\mathit{H}}_{1}$ of a small easy-axis anisotropic term is also discussed briefly. These studies allow calculation of the size dependence of quantities that we have recently shown to become lower bounds on m in the TL (bounds that are valid for short-range-interaction models as well). In the LM model, low-lying energy eigenstates with excitation energies of order ${\mathit{N}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$, where N is the number of spins, form a continuum (with no gap) in the TL. These are closely related to similar states shown to exist for the nearest-neighbor isotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnet. We show that this continuum has a density of states that is O(${\mathit{N}}^{0}$); i.e., it is not extensive.

Symmetry breaking and long range order in Heisenberg antiferromagnets

Tohru Koma, Hal Tasaki

We prove the bound ${\mathit{m}}_{\mathit{s}}$(\ensuremath{\beta})\ensuremath{\ge} \ensuremath{\surd}3 \ensuremath{\sigma}(\ensuremath{\beta}) between the spontaneous staggered magnetization ${\mathit{m}}_{\mathit{s}}$(\ensuremath{\beta}) and the long range order parameter \ensuremath{\sigma}(\ensuremath{\beta}) in the quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets. The same bound has been known for the Heisenberg ferromagnets from the works of Griffiths, and of Dyson, Lieb, and Simon, but extensions to the antiferromagnets had been lacking for more than two decades. When combined with the results on nonvanishing \ensuremath{\sigma}(\ensuremath{\beta}) from the Dyson-Lieb-Simon method, our bound proves the existence of symmetry breaking in the physically natural equilibrium states and ground states obtained by applying an infinitesimal symmetry breaking field.

Long-range order of the Lieb-Mattis model of a quantum antiferromagnet

I. G. Gochev, N. S. Tonchev

The spontaneous magnetization m and the root-mean-square order parameter ${\mathit{m}}_{0}$ of the Lieb-Mattis model for arbitrary temperatures and spin values s are obtained. For the ratio r(T,s)=m/${\mathit{m}}_{0}$, the value r(T,s)= \ensuremath{\surd}3 is found.

Order Parameter in Quantum Antiferromagnets

T. A. Kaplan, Peter Horsch, Wolfgang von der Linden

We discuss the nature of symmetry breaking in quantum antiferromagnets. We show that published arguments concerning the order parameter for the 2d s =1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet have to be reconsidered. These had led to \(\sqrt{3}\) and 1 for the ratio r of the mean z -component m of the staggered spin per particle m s z in an infinitesimal staggered field B , to the r.m.s. value m 0 of m s z with B =0, in the thermodynamic limit. We give arguments which put doubt on both values. Also we prove r ≧1, given m 0 ≠0.

Symmetry Breaking and Finite Size Effects in Quantum Many-Body Systems 1

Tohru Koma, Hal Tasaki

We consider a quantum many-body system on a lattice which exhibits a spontaneous symmetry breaking in its infinite volume ground states, but in which the corresponding order operator does not commute with the Hamiltonian. Typical examples are the Heisenberg antiferromagnet with a Néel order, and the Hubbard model with a (superconducting) off-diagonal long range order. In the corresponding finite system, the symmetry breaking is usually “obscured ” by “quantum fluctuation ” and one gets a symmetric ground state with a long range order. In such a situation, Horsch and von der Linden proved that the finite system has a low-lying eigenstate whose excitation energy is not more than of order N −1, where N denotes the number of the sites in the lattice. Here we study the situation where the broken symmetry is a continuous one. For a particular set of states (which are orthogonal to the ground state and with each other), we prove bounds for their energy expectation values. The bounds establish that there exist ever increasing numbers of low-lying eigenstates whose excitation energies are bounded by a constant times N −1. A crucial feature of the particular low-lying

Spontaneous continuous-symmetry breaking and tower of states in a comb chain

Jingya Wang, Zenan Liu, Bin-Bin Mao +4 more

Based on the study of a one-dimensional (1D) antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a comb lattice, this work identifies an example of spontaneous continuous symmetry breaking in a 1D system with short-range interactions. When a symmetry-preserving relevant perturbation is applied to the system, we find that this model can always be described by the Marshall-Lieb-Mattis (MLM) theorem. The Shen-Qiu-Tian theorem establishes a direct connection between the MLM theorem (in the case of bipartite lattices with unequal numbers of sites in the two sublattices) and the breaking of continuous symmetry. Moreover, although authors of previous studies have suggested that the presence of a tower of states (TOS) serves as an important numerical diagnostic of the tendency of a system toward spontaneous symmetry breaking, these investigations have primarily focused on two-dimensional systems. In 1D systems, however, the presence of long-range order does not automatically imply the emergence of a TOS. Here, we observe the existence of a TOS in a 1D realistic ferrimagnetic lattice system with short-range interactions.

J1-J2-J3Model with Long-Range Lieb-Mattis Interaction

Sven E. Krüger, Johannes Richter

Stimulated by the two-dimensional frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet with first-, second-, and third-neighbor couplings (J1-J2-J3 model) we consider a corresponding three-parameter model with a long-range antiferromagnetic Lieb-Mattis interaction. This model can be solved exactly and leads to a better understanding of the role of frustration in the J1 -J2-J3 model. We calculate the correłations in the groundstate and consider their finite size behavior.Furthermore we present the full thermodynamic phase diagram. We find the possibility of a disordered phase at T = 0.
