Abstract

Metastable np5(n + 1)s 3P0 (1s3 in Paschen notation) atoms of odd isotopes of neon, krypton and xenon have been optically pumped in a beam of metastable atoms by means of a C.W. single-mode dye laser. A magnetic resonance experiment leads to the determination of the g-factor of the 3P0 state : 3.02(2) x 10-4 for 21Ne; 0.974(4) × 10-4 for 83Kr; 7.781(2) x 10-4 for 129Xe and - 2.305(1) x 10-4 for 131Xe. These results are compared with theoretical predictions.

Metastability-exchange and depolarising collisions in xenon and krypton

V. Lefèvre-Seguin, Michèle Leduc

Collisions between rare-gas atoms in the 3 P 2 metastable state and in the ground state were studied. The metastable atoms were created by a discharge and oriented by optical pumping, and pressure broadening of their magnetic-resonance curves was measured. For xenon, mixtures of even and odd isotopes were used, leading to a determination of the cross section for metastability-exchange collisions. For krypton the results are reported for the disorientation of the metastable state in the natural gas. In addition the disorientation cross section has been measured of the krypton metastable state through collisions with helium.

Laser Cooling of a Neon Atomic Beam in Metastable States

Fujio Shimizu, Kazuko Shimizu, Hiroshi Takuma

A neon atomic beam in the 1s5 (J=2) metastable level is cooled by a counterpropagating laser beam using 1s5-2p9 transition. By transferring the 1s5 population to the 1s3 (J=0) metastable level using the optical pumping through 2p2, a cooled 1s3 beam is also generated.

Magneto-optical trapping of metastable xenon: Isotope-shift measurements

M. Walhout, Henry J. L. Megens, A. Witte +1 more

We have magneto-optically trapped the nine stable isotopes of xenon. Using the Zeeman slowing method to decelerate a beam of xenon atoms in the metastable 6s 3/2 [3/2${]}_{2}$ state (notation representing nl ${\mathit{J}}_{\mathrm{core}}$ [K=${\mathit{J}}_{\mathrm{core}}$+l${]}_{\mathit{J}}$), we load our trap to a collisionally limited density of more than ${10}^{10}$ atoms/${\mathrm{cm}}^{3}$. The two odd isotopes are trapped without a repumping frequency, even though they have hyperfine structure. The sensitivity of the trapping process to the laser frequency is exploited to make accurate measurements of the isotope shifts for the 6s 3/2 [3/2${]}_{2}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}6p 3/2 [5/2${]}_{3}$ laser-cooling transition and of the hyperfine constants for $^{131}\mathrm{Xe}$.

Isotope-selective photoionization spectroscopy of barium

Darrell J. Armstrong, J. Cooper

We demonstrate an experimental technique that selects the nuclear spin I=0 isotope $^{138}\mathrm{Ba}$ for spectroscopic measurements from a beam of natural barium containing seven stable isotopes. A cw dye laser is used to optically pump the I=3/2 isotopes $^{135}\mathrm{Ba}$ and $^{137}\mathrm{Ba}$ into the metastable 6s5d $^{1}$${\mathit{D}}_{2}$ and $^{3}$${\mathit{D}}_{1,2}$ levels via the 6s6p $^{1}$${\mathit{P}}_{1}$ excited state, leaving nearly pure $^{138}\mathrm{Ba}$ in the ground state. Photoionization spectra of the excited 5d6p $^{3}$${\mathit{D}}_{1}$ even isotope state recorded with optical pumping of $^{135}\mathrm{Ba}$ and $^{137}\mathrm{Ba}$ to the metastable levels are essentially devoid of forbidden features associated with the hyperfine interaction in the odd isotopes.

Selective removal of either metastable species from a mixed 3P0,2 rare-gas metastable beam

F. B. Dunning, T. B. Cook, W.P. West +1 more

A tunable cw laser has been used to selectively remove either of the two metastable species, 3P0,2, which are initially present in a neon metastable beam. The method is applicable to other rare gases and provides the opportunity for separate investigation of effects due to atoms in either the 3P0 or 3P2 state.

Very high resolution study of high Rydberg levels of the configurations 4f14 6snd of Yb I

L. Barbier, R.-J. Champeau

High Rydberg levels of ytterbium were studied in a beam of metastable atoms. Levels of the series 4f$^{14}$ 6$sn$d were populated from the metastable 4f$^{14}$ 6s 6p $^3$P$_o$ level by means of the U.V. light of a frequency-doubled single-mode dye laser and detected using the field ionization technique. The critical ionization fields $F_c$ of the levels 4f$^{14}$ 6$sn$d $^3$D$_1$ (24 ≤ n ≤ 57) were measured and found to obey the saddle point law ($F_c$ = (16 $n^{*4}$)$^{-1}$). The hyperfine structures of the odd isotopes were investigated. They are very peculiar due to the fact that the hyperfine interaction is of the same order of magnitude as (or even for the highest $n$ values, much more important than) the spin-orbit and electrostatic interactions. A theoretical account of the observed structures using the Slater-Condon parametric method is given. The relative influence of the excited ($n$d) and of the non-excited (6s) optical electron could thus be studied. Furthermore the influence of a valence level perturbing only the odd isotopes components for $n$ = 26 was demonstrated.
