Abstract

Spectroscopy of the Doppler broadened Rb atomic vapour coherently driven by two coupling fields is presented. Double dark resonances have been observed in different geometries of the coupling fields. A simple four-level model explains the basic counter-intuitive features of experimental spectra. The eigenvalues of the atom-field system distinguishing between the various geometries clarify the physics.

Unexpected Doppler-free resonance in generalized double dark states

C. Y. Ye, Alexander S. Zibrov, Yuri V. Rostovtsev +1 more

Doppler-free resonances have been observed in Rb atomic vapor coherently driven by two strong-coupling fields in an intrinsically non-Doppler-free geometry. A four-level theoretical model explains the experimental results. The explanation of the physics is based on the interplay between coherences generated in a four-level system.

Dark and bright Doppler-free resonances observed in atomic 87 Rb vapor

Xiaogang Wei, Jin‐Hui Wu, Hai-Hua Wang +4 more

We investigate an inhomogeneously broadened four-level atomic system driven by two strong coherent fields and probed by a weak laser. By carefully adjusting strengths of the driving fields, we can observe a greatly enhanced peak between two dark resonances in the probe absorption spectrum. The enhanced absorption peak will split into two lower ones and then result in a third dark resonance if we gradually weaken one driving field. Ultimately, the whole probe absorption spectrum evolves towards the usual EIT spectrum with only one dark resonance. Based on appropriate numerical calculations and qualitative analysis, we show that the experimental results can be well understood by separately considering the probe absorptions arising from partial atoms with different velocities.

Nonlinear optics via double dark resonances

Susanne F. Yelin, Vladimir A. Sautenkov, Michael M. Kash +2 more

Double dark resonances originate from a coherent perturbation of a system displaying electromagnetically induced transparency. We experimentally show and theoretically confirm that this leads to the possibility of extremely sharp resonances prevailing even in the presence of considerable Doppler broadening. A gas of ${}^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms is subjected to a strong drive laser and a weak probe laser and a radio frequency field, where the magnetic coupling between the Zeeman levels leads to nonlinear generation of a comb of sidebands.

Three-photon electromagnetically induced absorption and transparency in an inhomogeneously broadened atomic vapour

C. Y. Ye, Alexander S. Zibrov, Yuri V. Rostovtsev +2 more

We study both theoretically and experimentally three-photon electromagnetically induced transparency and electromagnetically induced absorption resonances in inhomogeneously broadened 85 Rb atomic vapour driven by probe and drive laser radiations. We observe narrow Doppler-free absorption as well as transmission resonances for the probe field when the driving laser field is redshifted from the D1 or D2 lines of 85Rb; the frequency difference between the drive and probe fields is equal to the hyperfine splitting of the ground state of the atoms, and the probe field is tuned to the centre of the Doppler broadened atomic transition. We theoretically study the spectroscopic effect in both homogeneously and inhomogeneously broadened media. Our numerical simulations are in good agreement with the experimental results.

Nonlinear resonances caused by coherent, optical pumping and saturating effects in the presence of three laser fields for the85Rb-D2line

Md. Mabud Hossain, S. Mitra, P Poddar +3 more

Atomic coherence resonances such as electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) signals are observed in a Doppler broadened multi-level system for the D 2 line of 85 Rb atoms in a vapour cell considering different types of atom–laser coupling schemes. Besides the coherence resonances, the nonlinear resonances like velocity selective optical pumping (VSOP) dips and velocity selective resonances (VSR) are also observed for the non-zero velocity selective groups of atoms. In the presence of pump, control and probe laser fields, we observe two EIT signals in a double Λ-type system and two EIA signals in a double V -type system. We are able to see the EIA signal for the non-zero velocity group of atoms when the pump laser is locked with an open transition by a small red detuning. We also report the experimental observation of simultaneous EIT and EIA signals in a (Λ+ V )-type system. The effect of frequency tuning of the control laser is also studied in the presence of the frequency locked pump laser. A simple theoretical analysis explains the experimental results.

Local Modulation of Double Electromagnetically Induced Transparency Spectrum

Hou Bang-pin, Shun-Jin Wang, Yu Wan‐Lun +1 more

The double electromagnetically induced transparency induced by two coupling fields can be realized in a four-level tripod-type atom. Such double transparency spectra can be locally modulated by using the weak coherent fields to perturb the coupling transitions. These investigations within this scheme can be independent of Doppler broadening by properly orienting these fields.
