Influence of parameters of the atom+radiation fields+magnetic field system on CPT canyon properties

Abstract

In our work we investigate the dependence of the CPT canyon width and depth on the radiation fields intensities fields intensities and detunings, the magnetic fields strength and the relaxation constants. We solve the problem of population dynamics for the system of 6P½ 6P3/2 and 7S½ levels of tallium, interacting with two linear polarized monochromatic laser fields and magnetic field, which is perpendicular to the laser propagation direction. Chosen configuration of E- and H-vectors permit us to separate three-level (Lambda) -type system of magnetic sublevels which is uncoupled by radiation fields with the other sublevels. The full set of density matrix equations is solved by a computer. We find the parameters values for which the canyon width is minimal and the depth is maximal. We show that the magnetic field breaks the conditions of equality of laser fields frequencies detunings for CPT. We observe the decreasing of canyon width and depth with increasing of the magnetic field.

Computer analysis of the CPT-dip properties

Anna V. Kuptsova

In our work we develop the computer analysis of the CPT-dip properties. We investigate the dependencies of CPT-dip width, depth and contrast on the radiation fields intensities and detunings, the magnetic fields strength, and the relaxation constants. CPT is observed in the population dynamics of two real three-level atomic systems. One of them is a (Lambda) - type system composed of the magnetic sublevels of 6P1/2, 6P3/2 and 7S1/2 states of Tl atom, the other one is a (Xi) -type system of the magnetic sublevels of 3S1/2, 3P3/2, 5S1/2 states of Na atom. The systems interact with two monochromatic laser fields and magnetic field, which is perpendicular to the laser propagation direction for the lambda-system and parallel for the (Xi) -system. On both cases polarization and mutual configurations of the fields are chosen specific, so that one can select the isolated three- level subsystems in multilevel atomic systems. We observe that the obtained dependencies are different from those in reference 1. It may be explained with non-equal Rabi frequencies and decay rates of neighboring transitions, which are the characteristic feature of real atoms.© (2001) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. Influence of the asymmetry of optical transitions in a three-level atom on the CPT-resonance

Anna V. Kuptsova

The characteristics of CPT-resonance, i.e. its width, depth and contrast, are considered for the three-level Λ-atom interacting with two resonant monochromatic radiation fields. We develop the computer simulation to investigate the influence on these characteristics of the asymmetric properties of medium: inequality of the dipole moments and inequality of the relaxation rates of population. Both weak and strong radiation fields are considered. For the weak fields the inequality of the Rabi-frequencies is found to influence weakly or even not to influence on the CPT-resonance shape. For the strong fields we found the significant influence of the asymmetry on the shape. We conclude that the CPT-resonance in the strong fields can be utilized as a tool for measure of the optical transitions asymmetry. As an example of the real system interacting with two strong radiation fields we consider the characteristics of the CPT-resonance for the magnetic sublevels of states 6P1/2, 6P3/2 and 7S1/2 for Tl-atom.

Population dynamics of magnetic sublevels for multilevel systems in high-power laser and external magnetic fields

T. Ya. Karagodova, Anna V. Kuptsova

The interaction of high power laser radiation with the atoms in the external magnetic field leads to the new nonlinear effects due to modifications of populations of the states of the system 'atom plus field.' From one side it can be followed by new peculiarities in the effect of the coherent population trapping and from other -- the effects of the population modifications are important for explanation of regularities of nonlinear magneto-optical effects. The modification of population dynamics due to the parameters of the system -- radiation field intensities, detunings, polarizations, magnetic field strength and orientation, relaxation constants leads to the new features in polarization effects, resonant fluorescence and resonant Raman effects. The new features of the considered theory are that it is built for multilevel atoms and has not restrictions on the probe intensity compared to the pump intensity. The theory and method permit to investigate the populations modifications depending on modifications of the parameters of the system and to find the relation between population dynamics and new nonlinear resonant magneto-optical effects. The considered system consists of atomic gas of low concentration in the constant magnetic field and two monochromatic laser fields of different intensities and polarizations. Analytically the influence of magnetic field on population dynamics of three-level systems have been considered. For real multilevel atom the computer simulations show the dependence of population dynamics on relaxation constants and the differences of this dynamics for different magnetic sublevels of the excited states of the atom. The results agree with known theoretical and experimental works.

Optimization of Laser Field Parameters for Controlling Populations of Magnetic Sublevels in a Multilevel Cs D2 System

Roman Sahakyan, E. A. Gazazyan

Abstract This work investigates laser control of populations of magnetic sublevels of the ground hyperfine level of the cesium atom on the D2 line (6S1/2 → 6P3/2). A theoretical model is developed within the full density-matrix formalism based on the Lindblad equation, which accounts for coherent interaction with the laser field, spontaneous decay, and decoherence processes. The dynamics of the system is described by a set of coupled ordinary differential equations that reflect the complete Zeeman level structure and the competing relaxation channels characteristic of a realistic multilevel atomic medium. The aim of this work is the controlled redistribution and transfer of population between selected magnetic sublevels while minimizing the population of excited states. To this end, an optimization problem for the laser field parameters is formulated, including pulse amplitudes, frequency detunings, phases, and temporal profiles. Numerical calculations are performed by integrating the high-dimensional system of density-matrix evolution equations. The proposed approach constitutes a scalable computation platform for modeling and controlling Zeeman population dynamics in complex quantum systems and can be applied to problems of quantum state control and preparation.

The influence of orientation and strength of external magnetic field on the time dependences of populations of atomic levels for Lamda systems

T. Ya. Karagodova

Abstract The theory of interaction of intense laser fields with multilevel atoms in external constant magnetic fields is applied to analysis of the dependences of the populations on time, on detuning of laser frequency, on magnetic field orientation, and strength for spontaneous decay on the levels of thermostat. Solving the Schrödinger equation for the “atom in magnetic field + radiation field” system in resonant approximation we have obtained the probability of the population of common level for a generalized Λ system (e.g., 6P1/2‐7S1/2‐6P3/2 levels of Tl atoms). The results of computer simulations permit the investigation of the peculiarities of coherent population trapping in such system. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J Quantum Chem, 2004

Influence of the polarization of radiation on the shape of resonances of coherent population trapping on fine-structure levels

T. Ya. Karagodova

The dependence of the shape of resonances of coherent population trapping (CPT) on magnetic sublevels of thallium atoms, forming a generalized Λ-system with the magnetic sublevels of the fine-structure levels as lower ones, on the polarization of the radiation fields has been numerically studied. The cases of linear, elliptical, and circular polarizations have been considered. The shape and the number of CPT resonances for different polarizations have been compared. It has been concluded that the electromagnetically induced transparency can be changed by changing the polarization properties of the laser radiation. The possibility to decrease the number of observed resonances may be useful in high-resolution spectroscopy.
