Abstract

We consider the most general Time-Dependent (TD) quadratic Hamiltonian written in terms of the bosonic operators a and a + , which may represent either a charged particle subjected to a harmonic motion, immersed in a TD uniform magnetic field, or a single mode photon field going through a squeezing medium. We solve the TD Schrödinger equation by a method that uses, sequentially, a TD unitary transformation and the diagonalization of a TD invariant, and we verify that the exact solution is a complete set of TD states. We also obtain the evolution operator which is essential to express operators in the Heisenberg picture. The variances of the quadratures are calculated and a phase space of parameters introduced, in which we identify squeezing regions. The results for some special cases are presented and as an illustrative example the parametric oscillator is revisited and the trajectories in phase space drawn.

Invariant operators for quadratic Hamiltonians

Mark Andrews

The motion of wave packets can be easily determined for any Hamiltonian that is quadratic in position and momentum, even if the coefficients of the terms in the Hamiltonian vary with time. The method is based on the existence of an invariant operator, linear in position and momentum, the coefficients of these operators being solutions of the corresponding classical system. This immediately yields a set of very simple wave packets whose evolution is easily determined, and whose magnitude has the same form as the energy eigenfunctions of the harmonic oscillator (i.e., Gaussian or Hermite–Gaussian). This set provides a complete basis for finding the evolution of any state and the exact propagator is readily determined. For the harmonic oscillator, this set includes coherent states, squeezed states, displaced number states, and squeezed number states as special cases. The following important properties hold for every quadratic Hamiltonian, no matter what time dependence is present in the Hamiltonian: (1) The motion of the centroid of any wave packet separates from that of any moments relative to the centroid. (2) Every detail of the evolution of the quantum system can be calculated from the solutions of the corresponding classical system. (3) Wave functions of Gaussian (or Hermite–Gaussian) form will retain that form as they evolve.

Quadratic Hamiltonians

Didier Robert, Monique Combescure

The aim of this chapter is to construct the quantum unitary propagator for Hamiltonians which are quadratic in position and momentum with time-dependent coefficients. We show that the quantum evolution is exactly solvable in terms of the classical flow which is linear. This allows to construct the metaplectic transformations which are unitary operators in \(L^2(\mathbb R^n)\) corresponding to symplectic transformations. Simple examples of such metaplectic transformations are the Fourier transform, which corresponds to the symplectic matrix J defined in (3.4) and the propagator of the harmonic oscillator, corresponding to rotations in the phase space. The main results of this chapter are computations of the quantum evolution operators for quadratic Hamiltonians acting on coherent states. We show that the time evolved coherent states are still Gaussian states which are recognized to be squeezed states centered at the classical phase space point (see Chap. 8). From these computations we can deduce most of properties concerning quantum quadratic Hamiltonians. In particular we get the explicit form of the Weyl symbols of the metaplectic transformations. These formulae are generalizations of the Mehler formula for the harmonic oscillator. Quadratic Hamiltonians are very important in quantum mechanics because more general Hamiltonians can be considered as non trivial perturbations of time dependent quadratic ones as we shall see in Chap. 5.

SQUEEZING AND SOME OTHER CHARACTERISTICS OF TIME-DEPENDENT HARMONIC OSCILLATOR WITH VARIABLE MASS

Amitabh Joshi, S. V. Lawande

In this paper we investigate the time evolution of a general time-dependent harmonic oscillator (TDHO) with variable mass using Feynman path integral approach. We explicitly evaluate the squeezing in the quadrature components of a general quantum TDHO with variable mass. This calculation is further elaborated for three particular cases of variable mass whose propagator can be written in a closed form. We also obtain an exact form of the time-evolution operator, the wave function, and the time-dependent coherent state for the TDHO. Our results clearly indicate that the time-dependent coherent state is equivalent to the squeezed coherent state.

Exact time-evolution of a generalized two-dimensional quantum parametric oscillator in the presence of time-variable magnetic and electric fields

Şirin A. Büyükaşık, Zehra Çayiç

The time-dependent Schrödinger equation describing a generalized two-dimensional quantum parametric oscillator in the presence of time-variable external fields is solved using the evolution operator method. For this, the evolution operator is found as a product of exponential operators through the Wei–Norman Lie algebraic approach. Then, the propagator and time-evolution of eigenstates and coherent states are derived explicitly in terms of solutions to the corresponding system of coupled classical equations of motion. In addition, using the evolution operator formalism, we construct linear and quadratic quantum dynamical invariants that provide connection of the present results with those obtained via the Malkin–Man’ko–Trifonov and the Lewis–Riesenfeld approaches. Finally, as an exactly solvable model, we introduce a Cauchy–Euler type quantum oscillator with increasing mass and decreasing frequency in time-dependent magnetic and electric fields. Based on the explicit results for the uncertainties and expectations, squeezing properties of the wave packets and their trajectories in the two-dimensional configuration space are discussed according to the influence of the time-variable parameters and external fields.

Exact time dependence of solutions to the time-dependent Schrödinger equation

Max A. Lohe

Solutions of the Schrödinger equation with an exact time dependence are derived as eigenfunctions of dynamical invariants which are constructed from time-independent operators using time-dependent unitary transformations. Exact solutions and a closed form expression for the corresponding time evolution operator are found for a wide range of time-dependent Hamiltonians in d dimensions, including non-Hermitean -symmetric Hamiltonians. Hamiltonians are constructed using time-dependent unitary spatial transformations comprising dilatations, translations and rotations and solutions are found in several forms: as eigenfunctions of a quadratic invariant, as coherent state eigenfunctions of boson operators, as plane wave solutions from which the general solution is obtained as an integral transform by means of the Fourier transform, and as distributional solutions for which the initial wavefunction is the Dirac δ-function. For the isotropic harmonic oscillator in d dimensions radial solutions are found which extend known results for d = 1, including Barut–Girardello and Perelomov coherent states (i.e., vector coherent states), which are shown to be related to eigenfunctions of the quadratic invariant by the ζ-transformation. This transformation, which leaves the Ermakov equation invariant, implements SU(1, 1) transformations on linear dynamical invariants. coherent states are derived also for the time-dependent linear potential. Exact solutions are found for Hamiltonians with electromagnetic interactions in which the time-dependent magnetic and electric fields are not necessarily spatially uniform. As an example, it is shown how to find exact solutions of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for the Dirac magnetic monopole in the presence of time-dependent magnetic and electric fields of a specified form.

ON PHOTON STATISTICS IN VARIABLE MEDIA

Sergey Kryuchkov, Erwin Suazo, Sergeĭ K. Suslov

We find explicit solutions of the Heisenberg equations of motion for a general quadratic Hamiltonian in a variable medium in the case of multi-parameter squeezed input photons. The corresponding photon statistics are also derived in the Schrodinger picture in an abstract Hilbert space operator settings. Their time evolution is given in terms of solutions of certain Ermakov- type system. The unitary transformation and an extension of the squeeze/evolution operator are introduced formally. 1.
