Abstract

Most of the existing dynamical studies in one dimension on magnetic insulators have considered the simplest spin models with nearest-neighbor interactions. In real systems, however, it is possible that longer range interactions are not entirely negligible. It is expected that the inclusion of next-nearest-neighbor interactions between spins in one-dimensional spin models will introduce a multitude of new frequencies in addition to the ones already present in the dynamics that arises due to nearest-neighbor interactions. We first present an exact solution for the dynamical xx-spin-pair correlations in an Ising chain with both nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions to confirm our expectation. We next show, via an approximate analytical calculation, that the dynamical zz-spin-pair correlations in the next-nearest-neighbor transverse Ising chain when plotted as a function of time is noticeably different with respect to the exactly solvable nearest-neighbor transverse Ising chain at T\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty} when the next-nearest-neighbor interaction is \ensuremath{\gtrsim}1/2 of the magnitude of the nearest-neighbor interaction. The effects could be fairly subtle in the time domain representation and in the spectral function when these additional interactions are weak (i.e., 1/2 of the nearest-neighbor interaction magnitude). The general conclusions reached in this work are expected to be valid for other simple quantum spin models such as the XY and XXZ models in one dimension. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Dynamics of the transverse Ising model with next-nearest-neighbor interactions

P. R. C. Guimarães, J. A. Plascak, O. F. de Alcantara Bonfim +1 more

We study the effects of next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) interactions on the dynamics of the one-dimensional spin-1/2 transverse Ising model in the high-temperature limit. We use exact diagonalization to obtain the time-dependent transverse correlation function and the corresponding spectral density for a tagged spin. Our results for chains of 13 spins with periodic boundary conditions produce results which are valid in the infinite-size limit. In general we find that the NNN coupling produces slower dynamics accompanied by an enhancement of the central mode behavior. Even in the case of a strong transverse field, if the NNN coupling is sufficiently large, then there is a crossover from collective mode to central mode behavior. We also obtain several recurrants for the continued fraction representation of the relaxation function.

Effect of antiferromagnetic exchange interactions on the Glauber dynamics of one-dimensional Ising models

M. G. Pini, A. Rettori

We study the effect of antiferromagnetic interactions on the single spin-flip Glauber dynamics of two different one-dimensional Ising models with spin $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1$. The first model is an Ising chain with antiferromagnetic exchange interaction limited to nearest neighbors and subject to an oscillating magnetic field. The system of master equations describing the time evolution of sublattice magnetizations can easily be solved within a linear field approximation and a long time limit. Resonant behavior of the magnetization as a function of temperature (stochastic resonance) is found, at low frequency, only when spins on opposite sublattices are uncompensated owing to different gyromagnetic factors (i.e., in the presence of a ferrimagnetic short range order). The second model is the axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising (ANNNI) chain, where an antiferromagnetic exchange between next-nearest neighbors is assumed to compete with a nearest-neighbor exchange interaction of either sign. The long time response of the model to a weak, oscillating magnetic field is investigated in the framework of a decoupling approximation for three-spin correlation functions, which is required to close the system of master equations. The calculation, within such an approximate theoretical scheme, of the dynamic critical exponent $z$, defined as $1∕\ensuremath{\tau}\ensuremath{\approx}{(1∕\ensuremath{\xi})}^{z}$ (where $\ensuremath{\tau}$ is the longest relaxation time and $\ensuremath{\xi}$ is the correlation length of the chain), suggests that the $T=0$ single spin-flip Glauber dynamics of the ANNNI chain is in a different universality class than that of the unfrustrated Ising chain.

Effects of next-nearest-neighbor interactions on the dynamics of random quantum Ising model

Xiao-Juan Yuan, Zhao Bang-Yu, Chen Shu-Xia +2 more

The dynamics of one-dimensional random quantum Ising model with both nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) interactions is investigated in the high temperature limit by the method of recurrence relations. Spin autocorrelations and the corresponding spectral densities of the system are calculated. Supposing that the exchange couplings (or the transverse fields) satisfy the double-Gaussian distribution, the effects of this distribution on the dynamics of the system is studied. The results show that the dynamics of the system undergoes a crossover from a collective-mode behavior to a central-peak one when the standard deviations σJ(or σB)of the random variables are small and there is no crossover when σJ(or σB)are large. Meanwhile, the effects of NNN interactions on the dynamics of the system are studied. It is found that the central-peak behavior becomes more obvious and the collective-mode behavior becomes weaker as Ki increase, especially when Ki>Ji/2(Ji and Ki are exchange couplings of the NN and NNN interactions, respectively). However, the effects are small when the NNN interactions are weak (KiJi/2).

Quasispins of vacancy defects in Ising chains with nearest- and next-to-nearest-neighbor interactions

Shijun Sun, Arthur P. Ramirez, Sergey Syzranov

Motivated by frustrated magnets and quasi-one-dimensional magnetic materials, we study the magnetic properties of one-dimensional (1D) Ising chains with nearest-neighbor (NN) and weaker next-to-nearest-neighbor (NNN) interactions in the presence of vacancy defects. The effect of a vacancy on the magnetic susceptibility of a spin chain is twofold: it reduces the length of the chain by an effective ``vacancy size'' and may also act as a free spin, a ``quasispin,'' with a Curie-type ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{\text{quasi}}=\ensuremath{\langle}{S}^{2}\ensuremath{\rangle}/T$ contribution to the susceptibility. In chains with antiferromagnetic short-range order, the susceptibility of vacancy-free chains is exponentially suppressed at low temperatures, and quasispins dominate the effect of impurities on the chains' magnetic properties. For chains with antiferromagnetic NN interactions, the quasispin matches the value $\ensuremath{\langle}{S}^{2}\ensuremath{\rangle}=1$ of the Ising spins in the chain for ferromagnetic NNN interactions and vanishes for antiferromagnetic NNN interactions. For chains with ferromagnetic short-range order, quasispin effects are insignificant due to exponentially large low-temperature susceptibilities, and the dominant effect of a vacancy is effectively changing the length of the chain.

Phase diagram of theXXZchain with next-nearest-neighbor interactions

Rolando D. Somma, Armando A. Aligia

We calculate the quantum phase diagram of an XXZ chain with nearest-neighbor (NN) ${J}_{1}$ and next-NN exchange ${J}_{2}$ with anisotropies ${\ensuremath{\Delta}}_{1}$ and ${\ensuremath{\Delta}}_{2},$ respectively. In particular we consider the case ${\ensuremath{\Delta}}_{1}=\ensuremath{-}{\ensuremath{\Delta}}_{2},$ to interpolate between the XX chain $({\ensuremath{\Delta}}_{i}=0)$ and the isotropic model with ferromagnetic phase ${J}_{2}.$ For ${\ensuremath{\Delta}}_{1}<\ensuremath{-}1,$ a ferromagnetic phase and two antiferromagnetic phases exist. For $|{\ensuremath{\Delta}}_{i}|<1,$ the boundary between the dimer and spin fluid phases is determined by the method of crossing of excitation spectra. For large ${J}_{2}{/J}_{1},$ this method seems to indicate the existence of a second spin fluid critical phase. However, an analysis of the spin stiffness and magnetic susceptibility for ${\ensuremath{\Delta}}_{1}={\ensuremath{\Delta}}_{2}=1$ suggests that a small gap is present.

The Kondo effect in spin chains

Nicolas Laflorencie, Erik Schwartz Sørensen, Ian K. Affleck

It is well known that the free electron Kondo problem can be described by a one-dimensional (1D) model because only the s-wave part of the electronic wavefunction is affected by the Kondo coupling. Moreover, since only the spin degrees of freedom are involved in the Kondo interaction, and due to spin–charge separation in 1D, the universal low energy long distance physics of the Kondo model also arises when a magnetic impurity is coupled to the end of a gapless antiferromagnetic J 1 –J 2 spin- chain, where J 1 ( J 2 ) is the (next) nearest neighbor coupling. Experimental realizations of such spin chain models are possible and, using various analytical and numerical techniques, we present a detailed and quantitative comparison between the usual free electron Kondo model and such spin chain versions of the Kondo problem. For the gapless J 1 –J 2 spin chain two cases are studied, with zero next nearest neighbor coupling, J 2 = 0, and with a critical second-neighbor coupling, J 2 = J 2 c . We first focus on the spin chain impurity model with a critical second-neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange where a bulk marginal coupling present in the spin chain model for J 2 < J 2 c vanishes . There, the usual Kondo physics is recovered in the spin chain model in the low energy regime (up to negligible corrections, dropping as powers of inverse length or energy). At J 2 c the spin chain model is not exactly solvable and we demonstrate the equivalence to the Kondo problem by comparing density matrix renormalization group calculations on the frustrated spin chain model with exact Bethe ansatz calculations of the electronic Kondo problem. We then analyze the nearest neighbor model ( J 2 = 0) where a new kind of Kondo effect occurs due to the presence of the bulk marginal coupling. This marginal coupling slightly alters the β function for the Kondo coupling, leading to a slower variation of the Kondo temperature, T K , with the bare Kondo coupling. In their exact Bethe ansatz solution of this spin chain impurity model ( J 2 = 0), Frahm and Zvyagin noted this relation as well as the connection to the Kondo problem. Here, by numerically solving the Bethe ansatz equations we provide further evidence for the connection to Kondo physics and in addition we present low temperature quantum Monte Carlo results for the impurity susceptibility that further support this connection.
