Parametric amplification of a coherent light wave in photorefractive BaTiO_3 by a single pump beam

Abstract

We demonstrate a new method of light amplification based on forward four-wave mixing in photorefractive BaTiO(3). A single pump beam of combined (ordinary and extraordinary) polarization can be used for an efficient cw amplification of a signal wave with slightly shifted temporal frequency. A signal wave with an initial power of less than 1 nW is amplified ~100 times in a 3.2-mm-thick sample.

Reflectivity of photorefractive cross-polarized four-wave mixing in consideration of pump depletion

Hisashi Matsuoka, Atsushi Okamoto, Mototsugu Takamura +1 more

We analyze the phase-conjugate reflectivity and the amplification property of cross-polarized four-wave mixing with a photorefractive BaTiO3 crystal in consideration of the pump-beam depletion. The coupled-wave equations of cross-polarized four-wave mixing with ordinary writing beams and an extraordinary reading beam are derived and solved with the grating-integral method. The results of calculations of the reflectivity and the amplification factors will be compared with the result under the undepleted-pumps approximation. In addition, to achieve high conversion efficiency, the optimum conditions for the intensity ratio and the angle configurations of the probe and pump beams are also discussed.

Photorefractive amplifier-converter and coherent oscillator with nonexponential gain

P. Jullien, Pierre Lompré, P. Mathey +2 more

For some parametric interactions with identically zero exponential gain for the signal wave the intensity of the idler wave can grow as a second power of the propagation coordinate. Such an amplification is revealed for the parametric mixing of four copropagating waves in BaTiO 3 ; two of them are ordinarily polarized and the two others are extraordinarily polarized. This mixing is used to build up a coherent oscillator. A reasonable qualitative agreement of the experimental results with the calculated data is demonstrated.

Pulsed amplification of continuous-wave signal fields in photorefractive BaTiO3

Nikolaos A. Vainos, S. Mailis, M. C. Gower

High-gain pulsed amplification of low intensity continuous-wave optical signals via two-wave mixing in a photorefractive barium titanate (BaTiO3) crystal is demonstrated. The technique relies on the nonlinear mixing between a signal field and a pump field produced via pulsed amplification of a continuous-wave field in excimer-pumped dye amplifiers.

New gain mechanism for wave amplification in photorefractive materials

Klaus H. Ringhofer, LASZLO SOLYMAR

It is shown that there is a gain mechanism in three- and four-wave forward interactions in which power is transferred inwards from the pump beams to the signal beams. The special case of amplifying a wave halfway between the pump waves is discussed.

Parametric four-wave mixing using a single cw laser

Erik Brekke, Laura Alderson

Four-wave mixing can be used to generate coherent output beams, with frequencies difficult to acquire in commercial lasers. Here, a single narrow external cavity diode laser locked to the two photon 5s-5d transition in rubidium is combined with a tapered amplifier system to produce a high power cw beam at 778 nm and used to generate coherent light at 420 nm through parametric four-wave mixing. This process is analyzed in terms of the intensity and frequency of the incoming beam as well as the atomic density of the sample. The efficiency of the process is currently limited when on resonance due to the absorption of the 420 nm beam, and modifications should allow a significant increase in output power.

Coherent-beam amplification and polarization switching in a birefringent medium-photorefractive crystal

I. C. Khoo, Y. Liang, Haorong Li

A recent theory of polarization switching and beam amplification effect in Kerr-like media is extended to birefringent photorefractive crystals. In this class of material, the birefringence allows a new mechanism for coherent nonlinear mixing effects among the extraordinary and ordinary waves, leading to amplification and polarization switching effects. Analytic solutions of the parametric equations governing these interacting waves are solved for both the phase-matched and phase-mismatched geometries. The authors also present an experimental confirmation of the predicted polarization switching effect.>
