Abstract

Abstract We examine the variational squeezed‐state and the correlated squeezed‐state approach to the ground state of the Holstein–Hubbard model in the case of strong electron–phonon interaction, paying special attention to the electron–hole symmetry of the model Hamiltonian. We have found differences with respect to the results previously reported for the normal and superconducting phases, and present an improved analysis.

Correlated squeezed polaron states in one dimension

Chi‐Fai Lo, Roger Sollie

In this paper we have applied the correlated squeezed-state approach to investigate the ground-state properties of the one-dimensional Hubbard model with a local Holstein-type electron-phonon interaction. We have introduced a variational ground state in which the phonon subsystem is in a correlated squeezed state. The correlated squeezed state has built in the correlation between different phonon modes induced by the linear coupling with the electrons. With optimal values of the variational parameters the correlated squeezed state will by construction yield an energy lower than those obtained in earlier treatments. This means that our variational ansatz is more stable as the ground state of the system. Furthermore, our variational study shows that in the correlated squeezed state the polaronic reduction effect of phonons is much more alleviated, and thus the mass enhancement inherent to the polaron effect is considerably weakened. This weakening of the reduction effect should, in turn, affect other physical properties of the system.

Correlated squeezed-state approach for the ground state of a system with strong electron-phonon interaction

Chi‐Fai Lo, Efstratios Manousakis, Roger Sollie +1 more

We have investigated the ground state of an electron-phonon system with strong electron-phonon interaction and a weak on-site Coulomb repulsion using the correlated squeezed-state approach. We have introduced a variational ground state in which the phonon subsystem is in a correlated squeezed state and the electron subsystem is in a superconducting pairing state. In addition to the anharmonicity of each phonon mode induced by the linear coupling with the electrons, the correlated squeezed state is able to take into account the nonlinearity of the induced interaction between different phonon modes beyond the Hartree approximation. Also, with optimal values of the variational parameters this trial state will by construction yield an energy lower than those obtained in previous studies, and thus our variational ansatz is a more stable ground state for this system. Furthermore, in this approximate ground state the reduction effect of phonons is much more alleviated, and thus the mass enhancement inherent to the polaron effect is considerably weakened. This weakening of the reduction effect should, in turn, affect other physical properties of the system; for instance, it does suggest the possibility of higher critical temperatures for superconductivity in the strong-coupling limit where the superfluidlike bipolaronic superconductivity is supposed to occur.

Superconductivity, charge-density waves, antiferromagnetism, and phase separation in the Hubbard-Holstein model

Seher Karakuzu, Luca F. Tocchio, Sandro Sorella +1 more

By using variational wave functions and quantum Monte Carlo techniques, we investigate the interplay between electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions in the two-dimensional Hubbard-Holstein model. Here, the ground-state phase diagram is triggered by several energy scales, i.e., the electron hopping $t$, the on-site electron-electron interaction $U$, the phonon energy ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}$, and the electron-phonon coupling $g$. At half filling, the ground state is an antiferromagnetic insulator for $U\ensuremath{\gtrsim}2{g}^{2}/{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}$, while it is a charge-density-wave (or bipolaronic) insulator for $U\ensuremath{\lesssim}2{g}^{2}/{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}$. In addition to these phases, we find a superconducting phase that intrudes between them. For ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}/t=1$, superconductivity emerges when both $U/t$ and $2{g}^{2}/t{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}$ are small; then, by increasing the value of the phonon energy ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}$, it extends along the transition line between antiferromagnetic and charge-density-wave insulators. Away from half filling, phase separation occurs when doping the charge-density-wave insulator, while a uniform (superconducting) ground state is found when doping the superconducting phase. In the analysis of finite-size effects, it is extremely important to average over twisted boundary conditions, especially in the weak-coupling limit and in the doped case.

Quantum fluctuations and the ground-state phase diagram of the strong-coupling Holstein-Hubbard model

J Stein

A Grassmann functional integration technique is applied to the anisotropic pseudo spin Hamiltonian derived from the Holstein-Hubbard model with strong electron-phonon coupling. It is found that in those regions of the low-temperature phase diagram where superconductivity and the charge-density wave coexist already the static and homogeneous saddle point solution of the resulting field theory yields a ground-state energy which is lower than the classical result corresponding to the usual mean-field solution. This is due to the presence of quantum fluctuations and leads to new ground-state phase boundaries quantitatively different from those obtained in previous work by conventional operator decoupling schemes.

Gutzwiller scheme for electrons and phonons: The half-filled Hubbard-Holstein model

Paolo Barone, Roberto Raimondi, Massimo Capone +2 more

We analyze the ground-state properties of strongly correlated electrons coupled with phonons by means of a generalized Gutzwiller wave function, which includes phononic degrees of freedom. We study in detail the paramagnetic half-filled Hubbard-Holstein model, where the electron-electron interaction can lead to a Mott transition and the electron-phonon coupling to a bipolaronic transition. We critically discuss the quality of the proposed wave function in describing the various transitions and crossovers that occur as a function of the parameters. Previous variational attempts are recovered as particular choices of the wave function, while keeping all the variational freedom allows to access regions of the phase diagram, otherwise inaccessible within previous variational approaches.

Strong interaction of correlated electrons with acoustical phonons using the extended Hubbard-Holstein model

V. A. Moskalenko, P. Entel, D. F. Digor

We investigate the interaction of correlated electrons with acoustical phonons using the extended Hubbard-Holstein model. The Lang-Firsov canonical transformation allows us to obtain mobile polarons for which a diagram technique and generalized Wick's theorem is used. In the strong-coupling limit of the electron-phonon interaction, and in the normal as well as in the superconducting phase, chronological thermodynamical averages of products of acoustical phonon-cloud operators can be expressed by one-cloud propagators. The pairing of electrons in the presence of acoustical phonon clouds is discussed and the critical temperature of the superconducting phase transition is determined for the special case $U<0$, where $U$ is the renormalized value of the on-site Coulomb repulsion. The renormalization is caused by the electron-phonon interaction.
