Alternating absorption features during attosecond-pulse propagation in a laser-controlled gaseous medium

Adrian Nikolaus Pfeiffer, M. Justine Bell, Annelise R. Beck +3 more

Recording the transmitted spectrum of a weak attosecond pulse through a medium, while a strong femtosecond pulse copropagates at variable delay, probes the strong-field dynamics of atoms, molecules, and solids. Usually, the interpretation of these measurements is based on the assumption of a thin medium. Here, the propagation through a macroscopic medium of helium atoms in the region of fully allowed resonances is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The propagation has dramatic effects on the transient spectrum even at relatively low pressures (50 mbar) and short propagation lengths (1 mm). The absorption does not evolve monotonically with the product of propagation distance and pressure, but regions with characteristics of Lorentz line shapes and characteristics of Fano line shapes alternate. Criteria are deduced to estimate whether macroscopic effects can be neglected or not in a transient absorption experiment. Furthermore, the theory in the limit of single-atom response yields a general equation for Lorentz- and Fano-type line shapes at variable pulse delay.

Optical bistability in layered InSe crystal

В. М. Салманов, A. G. Huseynov, Rovnag Rzayev +3 more

In this study, we experimentally study the dependence of the intensity of laser radiation incident on and transmitted through a layered InSe crystal. A picosecond YAG:Nd3+ laser with a parametric light generator was used as a light source, making it possible to generate light pulses with a duration of [Formula: see text]30 ps, tunable in frequency within the range of 0.75–1.5 μm. Optical bistability in the region of exciton resonance was detected in an InSe crystal at room-temperature under the picosecond YAG:Nd laser. It is shown that the decrease in absorption in the exciton resonance region is associated with the process of exciton–exciton interaction, shielding of excitons, and the Mott transition.

Propagation of Coherent Small-Area Light Pulses in CdS at the I 2 Bound Exciton

Marcus Jütte, H. Stolz, Wolf von der Osten

The propagation of small-area picosecond pulses of coherent light in resonance with the I 2 bound-exciton line in CdS is investigated. The observed strong reshaping of the pulses in form of propagation beats is consistent with the concomitantly measured hole formation in the pulse spectrum. By employing transform-limited time-resolved spectroscopy the complex amplitude of the transmitted optical field can be reconstructed. This allows to identify the beats as amplitude oscillations and phase changes by π characteristic of 0π pulse formation.
