Features of the optical bistability in an exciton-biexciton system

Abstract

The role of exciton-exciton, exciton-biexciton, and biexciton-biexciton interactions in the nonlinear transmission function of a ring cavity is studied. It is shown that transmission functions both without hysteresis and with one or two hysteresis loops can be obtained by taking into account the elastic interparticle interactions in the exciton-biexciton system.

QUANTUM TREATMENT OF SELF-ORGANIZATION PHENOMENA OF EXCITONS AND BIEXCITONS

Nellu Ciobanu, Anatol Rotaru, I. I. Gontia +1 more

We present in this paper the quantum treatment of self-organization phenomena of excitons and biexcitons in the geometry of a ring cavity. Applying the adiabatic elimination method of the exciton and biexciton variables, the Fokker-Planck equation for the transmitted field was obtained. The spectrum of transmission and second order correlation function were calculated. Thus, the spectrum of transmission describes a hysteresis cycle character, where a narrow spectral line in the end of cycle can be observed. The phenomena of optical bistability and switchings of excitons and biexcitons are investigated theoretically.

Excitability of excitons and biexcitons in a ring cavity

Vasile Tronciu, Richard A. Abram

We discuss the excitable behavior of excitons and biexcitons in a nonlinear optical ring cavity. The nonlinearity is due to the process of the creation of biexcitons by photon-assisted conversion of excitons. In the bifurcation analysis a region where a saddle point is close to an equilibrium has been found. In this region the system shows excitability. It is shown that the mechanism of the excitable behavior of excitons and biexcitons in a ring cavity is different from that of two-level atoms in the same system. The possible applications of an excitable ring cavity are discussed.

Optical bistability, switching, and self-pulsing in direct-gap semiconductors upon the binding of two excitons in a biexciton

A. Kh. Rotaru, V. Z. Tronchu

A system of nonlinear differential equations describing the dynamic evolution of coherent excitons, photons, and biexcitons is derived in the geometry of a ring cavity. Nonlinearity is caused by the direct binding of two excitons in a biexciton as a result of their Coulomb interaction, which was first predicted by Ivanov, Keldysh, and Panashchenko. The equation of state of the theory of optical bistability is obtained for the stationary case. The stability of stationary states is studied, and the switching times between the branches of the optical bistability curve are determined. It is shown that the appearance of nonlinear periodic and chaotic self-pulsations with the creation of a system of limit cycles and strange attractors in phase space is possible in the unstable portions of the equation of state. Dynamic optical bistability is studied, and the possibility of experimentally detecting the phenomena studied is discussed.

Cavity-free optical bistability of a thin semiconductor film in the exciton region of the spectrum

P. I. Khadzhi, A M Rusanov, S L Gaivan

The amplitude and frequency optical bistability in the transmission and reflection of laser radiation by a thin semiconductor film was investigated. It is caused by the interaction of the radiation with excitons and biexcitons. The appearance of a distinct region with a limit on transmission is predicted for a nonzero detuning from a resonance. A physical interpretation of the predicted characteristic features of the transmission function is given.

Abstract Results are given on the investigation of optical bistability and multistability phenomena both, in the exciton range of the spectrum due to exciton‐photon and exciton‐exciton interactions and in the range of two‐photon generation of the biexcitons (excitonic molecules). For each case the steady‐state equations are obtained.

Cavity-free optical bistability in a thin semiconductor film when excitons and biexcitons are generated

P. I. Khadzhi, S L Gaivan

A theoretical investigation is reported of steady-state nonlinear transmission of resonant laser radiation by a thin semiconductor film under the conditions of two-pulse generation of excitons and biexcitons. The equations of state are derived for the description of bistable behaviour of the amplitudes of the transmitted pulses and of the quasiparticle concentration, depending on the parameters of the exciting fields. The criteria of existence of an optical bistability are determined.
