Observation of 12-GHz linewidth of zero-phonon-line in photoluminescence spectra of nitrogen vacancy centers in nanodiamonds using a Fabry-Perot interferometer

Hong-Quan Zhao, Masazumi Fujiwara, Masayuki Okano +1 more

Photoluminescence (PL) spectra of single nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in 50-nm diamond nanocrystals at the zero-phonon line (ZPL) were directly observed using a Fabry-Perot interferometer at cryogenic temperatures. The narrowest linewidth of ZPL was 1.2 GHz (1.9 ± 0.7 GHz on average), comparable to ZPL linewidths in PL spectra reported for NV centers in pure bulk diamond. This observation is important to the application of NV centers for use in quantum communication and computation devices, and in nano-sensing.

Suppression of phonon sidebands in the spectrum of nitrogen vacancy centers in diamond nano-crystals

Hong-Quan Zhao, Masazumi Fujiwara, Shigeki Takeuchi

We report the substrate effects on the zero-phonon transitions and suppression of phonon side bands in the NV center spectrum. Fluorescence spectra of NV centers in cryogenic temperatures were measured by depositing diamond nanocrystals on different substrates including glass slides, undoped Si, and silica (1~2μm) on undoped Si (SiO2/Si). We found that SiO2/Si substrate was an effective substrate to suppress the phonon side band from spectra of NV- centers. Temperature dependence of NV- zero-phonon line Debye-Waller factor on Si and SiO2/Si were measured, from 2.5K to 230K, Debye-Waller factor decreased linearly on both of the two substrates.

Investigation of zero-phonon line characteristics in ensemble nitrogen-vacancy centers at 1.6 K–300 K

Zhenrong Zhang, Huan Fei Wen, Ziheng Gao +8 more

The ensemble of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers is widely used in quantum information transmission, high-precision magnetic field, and temperature sensing due to their advantages of long-lived state and the ability to be pumped by optical cycling. In this study, we investigate the zero-phonon line behavior of the two charge states of NV centers by measuring the photoluminescence of the NV center at 1.6 K-300 K. The results demonstrate a positional redshift, an increase in line width, and a decrease in fluorescence intensity for the ZPL of NV0 and NV- as the temperature increased. In the range of 10 K to 140 K, the peak shift with high concentrations of NV- revealed an anomaly of bandgap reforming. The peak position undergoes a blueshift and then a redshift as temperature increases. Furthermore, the transformation between NV0 and NV- with temperature changes has been obtained in diamonds with different nitrogen concentrations. This study explored the ZPL characteristics of NV centers in various temperatures, and the findings are significant for the development of high-resolution temperature sensing and high-precision magnetic field sensing in ensemble NV centers.
