Abstract

The analytic solution of the Bloch equations in the secular approximation for a two level atom driven off-resonance by an intense amplitude modulated field is presented. The dependence of the atomic population inversion on the longitudinal and transverse lifetimes is investigated.

Optical parametric resonances

P. Thomann

The response of a two-level atom driven by a strong resonant amplitude-modulated field is calculated in the Bloch model. The population difference and dipole moment show a resonant behaviour when the Rabi frequency is a multiple of the modulation frequency. This phenomenon is related to the resonant AC Stark effect and is the optical counterpart of the coherence resonances known in radiofrequency magnetic resonance.

Spectrum of resonance fluorescence from a two-level atom interacting with 100% amplitude-modulated intense radiation

Surya P. Tewari, M. Krishna Kumari

We give analytical results for the fluorescence spectrum of a two-level atom interacting with fully amplitude-modulated field at resonance. The results are valid for unequal longitudinal and transverse relaxation rates and follow the experimentally observed pattern. The intensity-dependent changes in the peak widths and peak heights are presented. Novel transient effects are predicted.

Atomic population inversion in a two-level atom for shaped and chirped laser pulses: Exact solutions of Bloch equations with dephasing

Sofiane Grira, Nadia Boutabba, Hichem Eleuch

We perform a theoretical analysis of the Bloch equations of a two-level atom with dephasing. Exact analytical solutions with two different chirped and time-dependent detuned laser pulses are derived. The atomic population inversion as well as the coherence are explored for different initial populations. We show that the stationary population inversion can be controlled.

DYNAMIC STARK EFFECT ON THE DYNAMICAL BEHAVIORS OF ATOM AND FIELD IN TWO-PHOTON PROCESSES

Lin-sheng He, 中国科学院安徽光学精密机械研究所

The dynamic Stark effect on the dynamical behaviors of atom and squeezed state field in-two-photon processes is studied by a model consisting of an effective two-level atom with multiple levels and quantized field with single mode. The dynamic Stark effect will cause the decreasing of the revival amplitude and the shortening of the period of the atomic Rabi osoillation of inversion, and the increasing the speed of energy exchange of an atom with the field. This is favorable to the enhancement of the photon antibunching and the narrowing of the Poisson distribution of photons. However, it will make the squeezing of field to decrease, even disappear.

Interaction of a decaying atom with a linearly polarized oscillating field

Mark P. Silverman, F. M. Pipkin

The Schrodinger equation for the interaction of a decaying two-level atom with an external oscillating field is separated via a series of matrix transformations into a time independent and a time dependent part; the former yields the radiofrequency Stark shift for decaying states, the latter is normally negligible for atomic beam resonance experiments. In the limit of stable states, or for the case of two levels of equal lifetime, the shift reduces to that of the Bloch-Siegert effect. Exact analytical expressions for the state amplitudes are obtained for the case when the time dependent matrix can be neglected; the resulting transition probabilities are investigated as functions of frequency, time, and interaction strength and are compared with the rotating field theory and the exact numerical solutions.

ac Stark splitting and parametric resonances in a two-level system driven by a strong amplitude-modulated optical field

Michael Z. Smirnov

The parametric resonances and the quasi-level structure of an atom strongly driven by a near-resonant amplitude-modulated optical field are studied theoretically. An approximate analytical solution of the density-matrix equations of motion is obtained for two-level and three-level atoms. Based on this solution the quasi-level shifts are analyzed, and the conditions for the quasi-levels to cross each other are derived. Expressions are given for the probe-wave absorption/gain spectrum near the parametric resonance and far from it. It is pointed out that the parametric resonances appear when the pumping field sidebands are tuned to resonance with some transitions among the quasi-levels.
