Optical parametric resonances

Abstract

The response of a two-level atom driven by a strong resonant amplitude-modulated field is calculated in the Bloch model. The population difference and dipole moment show a resonant behaviour when the Rabi frequency is a multiple of the modulation frequency. This phenomenon is related to the resonant AC Stark effect and is the optical counterpart of the coherence resonances known in radiofrequency magnetic resonance.

ac Stark splitting and parametric resonances in a two-level system driven by a strong amplitude-modulated optical field

Michael Z. Smirnov

The parametric resonances and the quasi-level structure of an atom strongly driven by a near-resonant amplitude-modulated optical field are studied theoretically. An approximate analytical solution of the density-matrix equations of motion is obtained for two-level and three-level atoms. Based on this solution the quasi-level shifts are analyzed, and the conditions for the quasi-levels to cross each other are derived. Expressions are given for the probe-wave absorption/gain spectrum near the parametric resonance and far from it. It is pointed out that the parametric resonances appear when the pumping field sidebands are tuned to resonance with some transitions among the quasi-levels.

Optical resonances in a strong modulated laser beam

P. Thomann

The fluorescent intensity of two-level atoms irradiated by a near-resonant amplitude-modulated light wave is calculated in the Bloch model. The analogy with magnetic resonance in a strong oscillating field making an arbitrary angle with the static field is pointed out. Experimental evidence of the predicted parametric and multiple quantum resonances has been obtained with an atomic beam of sodium. Optical pumping was used to prepare the sodium atoms as two-level systems.

Comment on absorption and fluorescence in strong frequency-modulated and amplitude-modulated fields

Wilhelmus M. Ruyten

It is shown that the interaction of frequency- and amplitude-modulated optical fields with a two-level atom, as treated by Nayak and Agarwal [Phys. Rev. A 31, 3175 (1985)] and Agarwal and Nayak [J. Phys. B 19, 3385 (1986)], respectively, can be described by the same Bloch equations, and that both have close counterparts in magnetic resonance. The matrix continued-fraction solution for the system is refined, and fluorescence and absorption spectra are explicitly related.

Resonance fluorescence spectrum of intense amplitude modulated laser light

Barbara Blind, P. Fontana, P Thomann

The spectrum of light scattered by a two-level atom in an intense laser beam with amplitude modulated light is calculated. The spectrum is obtained by evaluating the Fourier transform of the autocorrelation function of the dipole moment. The modulation introduces new components in both the coherent and incoherent parts of the frequency distribution. The total intensity when plotted as a function of the average Rabi frequency exhibits parametric resonances.

Bloch-vector model for dressed states of resonant Raman interaction

M. S. Shahriar, Philip Hemmer

It is well known that the resonant Raman interaction optically pumps atoms into a non-absorbing dressed-state.1 When this state is long-lived compared to the optical Rabi frequencies and the decay rate of the intermediate state, many interesting dynamics arise. These dynamics are significant in applications such as Raman clock AC–Stark shifts, microwave phase-sensitive optical absorption,2 and Raman cooling. By using appropriate approximations, we show that these dynamics can be well described with a Bloch-vector model, which involves only ground-state populations and coherence. This ground-state Bloch-vector model resembles the Bloch-vector model of a two-level system, but it has subtly different dynamics. Furthermore, we construct a novel dressed-state Bloch-vector that clearly shows the analogy between conventional optical pumping and coherent Raman trapping. In this model, one dressed-state is a nonabsorbing state, and the other is an absorbing state. We use the dressed-state Bloch vector to show how Raman AC–Stark shift arises and how it depends on experimental parameters. We also show how the microwave phase-sensitive optical absorption can be quantitatively calculated in a simple way.
