Nonlinear interaction of a two-level atom with counterpropagating radiation beams of different frequencies

Abstract

The theoretical and numerical results on the nonlinear dynamics of an atom in the fields of two counterpropagating radiation beams of different frequencies are presented. Both resonant and nonresonant interaction regimes are investigated. The atom center-of-mass energy dependence on the field amplitudes exhibits the nonlinear threshold effect of reflection of an atom in the interference field. This phenomenon leads to the atom acceleration or deceleration depending on its initial state. This acceleration or deceleration is base of a shock character because of the impact with the moving potential barrier; it occurs at ultrashort distances on the order of radiation field wavelengths. Furthermore, the role of initial conditions is discussed and analyzed numerically.

Laser acceleration of atoms by a nonlinear mechanism

H. K. Avetissian, A. K. Avetissian, G. F. Mkrtchian

A nonlinear threshold phenomenon at the interaction of atoms with two counter-propagating light beams of different frequencies is presented. The existence of a critical intensity of the interference field is shown, which is the threshold of nonlinear resonance achieved in the field. This phenomenon leads to acceleration or deceleration of the atom, depending on its initial velocity. Such acceleration/deceleration of shock character, because of the impact with the potential barrier, occurs on ultrashort distances on the order of laser wavelengths, and depends neither on the field magnitude nor on interaction length.

Nonlinear resonances in the near-field interaction between atoms

Oleg N. Gadomsky, A. G. Glukhov

It has been shown that nonlinear near-field optical resonances occur in diatomic nanostructures consisting of identical or different two-level atoms in the presence of a radiation field when the dipole-dipole interaction is taken into account. The frequencies of these resonances depend strongly on the intensity of the external optical radiation, on the initial conditions, on the polarization of the external field with respect to the axis of the nanostructure, and on the interatomic distance. The interatomic interaction is taken into account beyond perturbation theory. For this reason, the effective polarizabilities of the atoms of the nanostructure are expressed in terms of the polynomials of both the interatomic distance and the electric field strength of the external optical wave. A “falling tower” effect that is caused by the nonlinear behavior of the local dipole moments of atoms in the nanostructure is predicted.

Nonlinear and parametric effects in atomic rf spectroscopy

L. N. Novikov, G. V. Skrotskiǐ

Nonlinear phenomena occurring during interaction between an atom and a strong rf field of resonant or nonresonant frequency are reviewed. The account is given in both semiclassical and consistently quantummechanical languages. The concept of an atom "dressed by the radiation field" in which not only the optical-frequency field but also the radio-frequency field is quantized is presented in detail. The results are summarized of theoretical and experimental studies of multiphoton transitions, radiative shifts of normal magnetic resonance lines, parametric resonance, and coherent resonances under the conditions of optical pumping. The influence of nonresonance rf fields on magnetic properties and the rate of magnetic relaxation of atoms is discussed.

Two-level atoms moving in strong biharmonic and monochromatic counterpropagating fields

S. A. Pulkin, Tai Hyun Yoon, A. I. Kuz’min +1 more

The polarization and power spectra of radiation of two-level atoms moving in a field of biharmonic and monochromatic counterpropagating waves are computer simulated. It is shown that, as the frequencies of the counterpropagating waves are scanned with respect to the central frequency of the Doppler contour in the intensity distribution of groups of atoms moving at velocities that satisfy the resonance conditions for multiphoton transitions between quasi-energy levels, apart from well-known sub-Doppler resonances, narrow peaks appear. Such resonances should also occur for the stimulated light pressure force.

Near-field effect in the nonlinear resonant optics

Oleg N. Gadomsky, Konstantin V. Krutitsky, Sergey V. Sukhov

The role of near field effect is investigated in the boundary value problem of nonlinear resonant optics at the interaction of steady quasiresonant optical radiation with the film of two-level atoms. Dynamical detuning from resonance, nonlinear index of refraction, reflected and refracted waves are analyzed on the basis of solution of closed system of integral field equation and optical Bloch equations with account for discrete-continuous distribution of two-level atoms. An essential dependence of near field effect upon type of symmetry of atomic distribution is shown.

Instabilities of counterpropagating beams in a nonlinear medium

Railing Chang, Pierre Meystre

The dynamical behavior of counterpropagating light beams interacting with a nonlinear medium is studied numerically. When the incident intensities are increased, this system becomes unstable and exhibits oscillations undergoing complex behavior, including quasiperiodic motion and chaos. We analyze the output fields by using Fourier spectra, phase portraits, and autocorrelation functions. In the chaotic regime, the Lyapunov exponents and dimensions are calculated. A physical interpretation of the quasiperiodic motion is also given by an exact calculation of the absorption spectrum of a two-level atom.
