Light amplification and squeezing in coherently pumped atomic systems

Yifu Zhu, Min Xiao

Light amplification without population inversion may be induced by optical coherence among the coupled slates driven by laser fields or by the difference between the absorption and emission paths manifested by quantum interference. The optical coherence and quantum interference may lead to interesting statistical properties, such as narrower intrinsic linewidths and amplitude squeezing in inversionless lasers with coherently pumped atomic systems as active media.

Controlling Irreversibility and Directional Flow of Light with Atomic Motion

C. H. Raymond Ooi

The Doppler effect of moving atoms can create irreversibility of light. We show that the laser field in electromagnetic induced transparency (EIT) scheme with atomic motion can control the directional propagation of two counter-propagating probe fields in atomic gas cell. The quantum coherence effect serves as an optical transistor. Interference of the two output fields from the cell shows useful feature for determining the mean atomic velocity and can be useful as quantum velocimeter. We also find that the sign of the dispersive phase in EIT has a unique property, which helps to explain certain features in the interference.

Enhanced nonlinear susceptibilities for squeezed-light generation

Daniel F. Walls, Klaus M. Gheri

It has been shown by Imamoglu, Field and Harris1 that electromagnetically induced transparency can be used to achieve laser action without inversion. We have analyzed the quantum noise properties of the laser without inversion and shown that the intensity fluctuations in the laser output may be reduced 50% below the shot noise limit2. In recent work Makuta, Marmet and Stoicheff3 have shown that a resonantly enhanced second order susceptibility with reduced absorption at the second reduced harmonic wavelength may be achieved by electromagnetically induced transparency induced with a dc-electric field. We have calculated the photon statistics of the second harmonic light and found that near 100% amplitude squeezing can be achieved in the output at the second harmonic. We have shown that driven A model atoms in an optical cavity can reduce the amplitude fluctuation of a strong coherent input light field into the cavity by almost 100% without significantly depleting the input signal.
