Rabi-vibronic resonance with large number of vibrational quanta

Rachel Glenn, M. É. Raǐkh

We study theoretically the Rabi oscillations of a resonantly driven two-level system linearly coupled to a harmonic oscillator (vibrational mode) with frequency ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}$. We show that for weak coupling, ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{p}\ensuremath{\ll}{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}$, where ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{p}$ is the polaronic shift, Rabi oscillations are strongly modified in the vicinity of the Rabi-vibronic resonance ${\ensuremath{\Omega}}_{R}={\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}$, where ${\ensuremath{\Omega}}_{R}$ is the Rabi frequency. The width of the resonance is $({\ensuremath{\Omega}}_{R}\ensuremath{-}{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0})\ensuremath{\sim}{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{p}^{2/3}{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}^{1/3}\ensuremath{\gg}{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{p}$. Within this domain of ${\ensuremath{\Omega}}_{R}$ the actual frequency of the Rabi oscillations exhibits a bistable behavior as a function of ${\ensuremath{\Omega}}_{R}$. Importantly, within the resonant domain, the oscillator is highly excited, which allows us to treat it classically.

Quantum dynamics of a microwave driven superconducting phase qubit coupled to a two-level system

Guozhu Sun, Xueda Wen, Bo Mao +4 more

We present an analytical and comprehensive description of the quantum dynamics of a microwave resonantly driven superconducting phase qubit coupled to a microscopic two-level system (TLS), covering a wide range of the external microwave field strength. Our model predicts several interesting phenomena in such an ac driven four-level bipartite system including anomalous Rabi oscillations, high-contrast beatings of Rabi oscillations, and extraordinary two-photon transitions. Our experimental results in a coupled qubit-TLS system agree quantitatively very well with the predictions of the theoretical model.

Tunneling Spectroscopy of Two-Level Systems Inside a Josephson Junction

Ivar Martin, Lev N. Bulaevskii, Alexander Shnirman

We consider a two-level system (TLS) with energy level separation plankvOmega0 inside a Josephson junction. The junction is shunted by a resistor R and is voltage V biased. If the TLS modulates the Josephson energy and/or is optically active, it is Rabi driven by the Josephson oscillations in the running phase regime near the resonance 2eV=plankvOmega0. The Rabi oscillations, in turn, translate into oscillations of current and voltage that can be detected in noise measurements. This effect provides an option to fully characterize the TLS inside Josephson junction and to find the TLS's contribution to the decoherence when the junction is used as a qubit.
