Boundary conditions and variable ground state entropy for the antiferromagnetic Ising model on a triangular lattice

Abstract

The ground state entropy density of the antiferromagnetic Ising model on a triangular lattice is considered in the infinite volume limit as a function of boundary conditions on a finite triangular domain. The ground states of this domain do not map to a dimer covering and so cannot be classified into string sectors. A parametrized boundary condition is identified that allows the entropy density to be tuned to values between nondegeneracy and maximal degeneracy. The results are compared to those for a rectangular periodic domain for which the ground states can be classified into string sectors.

Triangular Ising antiferromagnet: Boundary conditions, ground state entropy, and vortices

Rick P. Millane, Richard Clare

The ground state entropy density of the triangular Ising antiferromagnet is considered as a function of boundary conditions on domains for which the ground states do not admit a dimer covering. These domains admit a rich set of ground states that cannot be classified in the usual way in terms of nonintersecting strings. Various parametrized boundary conditions and domain shapes are identified that allow the ground state entropy density to be varied between zero and maximal degeneracy. The dependence of degeneracy on boundary spins and/or domain shape is interpreted in terms of strings that are not restricted to be nonintersecting.

Ising antiferromagnet on a finite triangular lattice with free boundary conditions

Seung‐Yeon Kim

The exact integer values for the density of states of the Ising model on an equilateral triangular lattice with free boundary conditions are evaluated up to L = 24 spins on a side for the first time by using the microcanonical transfer matrix. The total number of states is 2 N s = 2300 ≈ 2.037 × 1090 for L = 24, where N s = L(L+1)/2 is the number of spins. Classifying all 2300 spin states according to their energy values is an enormous work. From the density of states, the exact partition function zeros in the complex temperature plane of the triangular-lattice Ising model are evaluated. Using the density of states and the partition function zeros, we investigate the properties of the triangularlattice Ising antiferromagnet. The scaling behavior of the ground-state entropy and the form of the correlation length at T = 0 are studied for the triangular-lattice Ising antiferromagnet with free boundary conditions. Also, the scaling behavior of the Fisher edge singularity is investigated.

Ising antiferromagnet in the critical magnetic field on square lattice with free boundary conditions

Seung‐Yeon Kim

The properties of the antiferromagnetic Ising model in the critical magnetic field are investigated by evaluating exactly its all possible ground states on L × L square lattice (L = 4∼16) with free boundary conditions for the first time. From the exact integer values for the number of ground states Ωc(L) on L × L square lattice, the exact ground-state entropy (in unit of the Boltzmann constant kB) per volume sc(L) = L−2lnΩc(L) and the exact ground-state magnetization mc(L;T = 0) = L−2〈Σiσi〉 are calculated in the critical magnetic field, where σi is the magnetic spin on a lattice site i. The values of the ground-state entropy sc(L) and the ground-state magnetization mc(L), in the limit L → ∞, are accurately estimated to be sc/kB = 0.40750±0.00108 and mc = 0.54696±0.00065. In addition, for the first time, we estimate the values of the scaling exponents ωs and ωm, controlling the finite-size scaling behaviors of the ground-state entropy and the ground-state magnetization as sc−sc(L)∼L−ωs and mc−mc(L)∼L−ωm respectively. Our results show clearly that ωs = ωm = 1.

Nonequilibrium relaxations within the ground-state manifold in the antiferromagnetic Ising model on a triangular lattice

Eunhye Kim, Sung Jong Lee, Bongsoo Kim

We present an extensive Monte Carlo simulation study on the nonequilibrium kinetics of triangular antiferromagnetic Ising model within the ground state ensemble which consists of sectors, each of which is characterized by a unique value of the string density p through a dimer covering method. Building upon our recent work [Phys. Rev. E 68, 066127 (2003)] where we considered the nonequilibrium relaxation observed within the dominant sector with p=2/3, we here focus on the nonequilibrium kinetics within the minor sectors with p<2/3. The initial configurations are chosen as those in which the strings are straight and evenly distributed. In the minor sectors, we observe a characteristic spatial anisotropy in both equilibrium and nonequilibrium spatial correlations. We observe emergence of a critical relaxation region (in the spatial and temporal domain) which grows as p deviates from p=2/3. Spatial anisotropy appears in the equilibrium spatial correlation with the characteristic length scale xi(e,V)(p) diverging with vanishing string density as xi(e,V)(p) approximately p(-2) along the vertical direction, while along the horizontal direction the spatial length scale diverges as xi(e,H) approximately p(-1). Analytic forms for the anisotropic equilibrium correlation functions are given. We also find that the spin autocorrelation function A(t) shows a simple scaling behavior A(t)=A(t/tau(A)(p)), where the time scale tau(A)(p) shows a power-law divergence with vanishing p as tau(A)(p) approximately p(-phi) with phi approximately or equal to 4. These features can be understood in terms of random walk nature of the fluctuations of the strings within the typical separation between neighboring strings.

Some Exact Results on the Ising Antiferromagnet with General Spin S on the Triangular Lattice

D. Hajdukovć, B. U. Vujičić

Abstract A triangular lattice is considered which consists of five chains, i.e. a lattice with N = 5 × L sites. In the thermodynamic limit (L → ∞) and in the critical magnetic field, the exact ground‐state entropy for such a lattice is obtained as an explicit function of spin S. It is shown that this exact result for the lattice finite in one and infinite in the other dimension is an excellent approximation for the triangular lattice infinite in both dimensions.

Supersymmetric lattice fermions on the triangular lattice: superfrustration and criticality

Liza Huijse, D Mehta, N Moran +2 more

We study a model for itinerant, strongly interacting fermions where a judicious tuning of the interactions leads to a supersymmetric Hamiltonian. On the triangular lattice this model is known to exhibit a property called superfrustration, which is characterized by an extensive ground state entropy. Using a combination of numerical and analytical methods we study various ladder geometries obtained by imposing doubly periodic boundary conditions on the triangular lattice. We compare our results to various bounds on the ground state degeneracy obtained in the literature. For all systems we find that the number of ground states grows exponentially with system size. For two of the models that we study we obtain the exact number of ground states by solving the cohomology problem. For one of these, we find that via a sequence of mappings the entire spectrum can be understood. It exhibits a gapped phase at 1/4 filling and a gapless phase at 1/6 filling and phase separation at intermediate fillings. The gapless phase separates into an exponential number of sectors, where the continuum limit of each sector is described by a superconformal field theory.
