Abstract

We present an extensive Monte Carlo simulation study on the nonequilibrium kinetics of triangular antiferromagnetic Ising model within the ground state ensemble which consists of sectors, each of which is characterized by a unique value of the string density p through a dimer covering method. Building upon our recent work [Phys. Rev. E 68, 066127 (2003)] where we considered the nonequilibrium relaxation observed within the dominant sector with p=2/3, we here focus on the nonequilibrium kinetics within the minor sectors with p<2/3. The initial configurations are chosen as those in which the strings are straight and evenly distributed. In the minor sectors, we observe a characteristic spatial anisotropy in both equilibrium and nonequilibrium spatial correlations. We observe emergence of a critical relaxation region (in the spatial and temporal domain) which grows as p deviates from p=2/3. Spatial anisotropy appears in the equilibrium spatial correlation with the characteristic length scale xi(e,V)(p) diverging with vanishing string density as xi(e,V)(p) approximately p(-2) along the vertical direction, while along the horizontal direction the spatial length scale diverges as xi(e,H) approximately p(-1). Analytic forms for the anisotropic equilibrium correlation functions are given. We also find that the spin autocorrelation function A(t) shows a simple scaling behavior A(t)=A(t/tau(A)(p)), where the time scale tau(A)(p) shows a power-law divergence with vanishing p as tau(A)(p) approximately p(-phi) with phi approximately or equal to 4. These features can be understood in terms of random walk nature of the fluctuations of the strings within the typical separation between neighboring strings.

Nonequilibrium critical dynamics of the triangular antiferromagnetic Ising model

Eunhye Kim, Bongsoo Kim, Sung Jong Lee

We investigate the nonequilibrium critical dynamics of antiferromagnetic Ising model on a two-dimensional triangular lattice via dynamic Monte Carlo simulation employing spin-flip kinetics. Macroscopic degeneracy of the ground state originating from geometric frustration fundamentally affects the nonequilibrium dynamics of the system. In particular, the defects and the loose spins (whose flip costs no energy) play key roles in the dynamics. The long-time evolution is characterized by a critical dynamic scaling with a growing length scale xi(t). With random initial configurations, xi(t) exhibits a subdiffusive growth in time, xi(t) approximately t(1/z) with 1/z approximately 0.43, while xi(t) shows a diffusive growth with z=2 for the relaxation within the dominant sector of the ground-state manifold. The nonequilibrium critical dynamics therefore exhibits an interesting initial-state dependence. Persistence and the two-time temporal properties are also discussed.

Nonequilibrium dynamics of fully frustrated Ising models atT= 0

Márton Karsai, J C Anglès d'Auriac, Ferenc Iglói

We consider two fully frustrated Ising models: the antiferromagnetic triangular model in a field of strength h = HTk B , as well as the Villain model on the square lattice. After a quench from a disordered initial state to T = 0 we study the nonequilibrium dynamics of both models by Monte Carlo simulations. In a finite system of linear size, L , we define and measure sample-dependent ‘first passage time’, t r , which is the number of Monte Carlo steps until the energy is relaxed to the ground state value. The distribution of t r , in particular its mean value, ⟨ t r ( L )⟩, is shown to obey the scaling relation, ⟨ t r ( L )⟩∼ L 2 ln( L / L 0 ), for both models. Scaling of the autocorrelation function of the antiferromagnetic triangular model is shown to involve logarithmic corrections, both at H = 0 and at the field-induced Kosterlitz–Thouless transition: however, the autocorrelation exponent is found to be H -dependent.

Boundary conditions and variable ground state entropy for the antiferromagnetic Ising model on a triangular lattice

Rick P. Millane, Nicholas D. Blakeley

The ground state entropy density of the antiferromagnetic Ising model on a triangular lattice is considered in the infinite volume limit as a function of boundary conditions on a finite triangular domain. The ground states of this domain do not map to a dimer covering and so cannot be classified into string sectors. A parametrized boundary condition is identified that allows the entropy density to be tuned to values between nondegeneracy and maximal degeneracy. The results are compared to those for a rectangular periodic domain for which the ground states can be classified into string sectors.

Non-equilibrium dynamics of the Ising model for T less-than/equal-toTc

K. Humayun, Alan J. Bray

The growth of order in Ising models with nonconserved order parameter is considered for quenches to final temperatures T f =0 and T f =T c . The results of numerical simulations in spatial dimension d=2 are presented. In all cases a scaling regime is entered for sufficiently long times, where the characteristic length scale is the 'domain size' L(t) approximately t 1 2/, for T f =0, and the 'nonequilibrium correlation length', xi (t) approximately t 1 z/, for T f =T c . The equal-time correlation function has the expected scaling forms f(r/L(t)) and r -(d-2+ eta ) f c (r/ xi (t)) for T f =0 and T c respectively. The scaling function f c (x) has interesting short-distance behaviour which is elucidated using scaling arguments and by in - and 1/n-expansions. The T=0 scaling function f(x) depends on whether the spin correlations present in the initial conditions are of long or short range, as does the exponent which describes the decay of the autocorrelation function, A(t)=((S i (t))S i (O)) approximately L(t) - . Results for a quench from the equilibrium critical state to T f =0 are consistent with theoretical predictions.

Triangular antiferromagnetic Ising model with a transverse field at zero temperature

K. A. Penson, Rémi Jullien, Pierre M. Pfeuty

The ground-state properties of the triangular antiferromagnetic Ising model with Ising constant J in a transverse field h are investigated by a real-space renormalisation group method. For h=0, the known properties (energy=-J, finite entropy, no order) are recovered. For h not=0, the ground state remains highly degenerate, no order exists and the correlation function exhibits power-law behaviour up to (h/J)c approximately=1.41, where a phase transition takes place to a non-degenerate ground state. At h/J=(h/J)c, power-law behaviour is still observed for the correlation function but with a different exponent. Just above this region a gap Delta opens ( Delta approximately ((h/J)-(h/J)c)s with s=0.8) and the coherence length of the correlation function xi diverges as xi varies as ((h/J)-(h/J)c)-v with v=0.8. This corresponds to a three-dimensional classical model where h is replaced by the temperature. In this type of system, where the ground state has a degeneracy proportional to N2/3 it is predicted that a transition will occur at a finite T c to a low-temperature phase without order but with power-law behaviour for the correlation function, as for the classical XY model in two dimensions.

CRITICAL COARSENING DYNAMICS OF SPIN S =1/2, 3/2 ANTIFERROMAGNETIC ISING MODEL ON TRIANGULAR LATTICE

Kwanghoon Chung, Mookyung Cheon, Iksoo Chang

The critical coarsening dynamics of the spin S =1/2, 3/2 antiferromagnetic Ising model on a triangular lattice is studied by the dynamic Monte Carlo simulation using a heat bath algorithm. The triangular antiferromagnetic Ising (TAI) model possesses an intrinsic geometrical frustration and a large degeneracy of ground state which may affect the equilibrium and non-equilibrium critical behaviors. The S =1/2 TAI has no phase transition at a finite temperature, but it was suggested that the S =3/2 TAI has the Kosterlitz–Thouless (KT)-type phase transition at a finite temperature. We employ a finite size scaling approach for the correlation function from the short-time dynamics of the S =1/2, 3/2 TAI to calculate the values of the static critical exponent η and the dynamic exponent z. For the S =1/2 TAI, our dynamic scaling analysis provides η =0.498±0.006 and z =2.278±0.020 at T =0, agreeing with the previous results. For the S =3/2 TAI, after identifying a KT-transition temperature TKT =0.51±0.01, we find the temperature-dependent η ranging from 0.301±0.008 at T =0.51 to 0.224±0.016 at T =0 along the KT-line whereas the value of z =2.20±0.06 is constant for T≤TKT. It is shown that the spin S =3/2 TAI model and the two-dimensional XY model, sharing the KT-type phase transition, exhibit similar static critical and coarsening dynamics behavior. For both the S =1/2, 3/2 TAI, the value of z (η) is compatible with (larger than) that of the Ising model at Tc and the XY model for T≤TKT in two-dimension. Our results imply that although the quasi-long-range order disappears with ηXY =0 in the two-dimensional XY model at T =0, the S =3/2 TAI still maintains it with η TAI =0.224 due to the effect of a frustration and a high degeneracy of ground state.
