Abstract

We investigate the nonequilibrium critical dynamics of antiferromagnetic Ising model on a two-dimensional triangular lattice via dynamic Monte Carlo simulation employing spin-flip kinetics. Macroscopic degeneracy of the ground state originating from geometric frustration fundamentally affects the nonequilibrium dynamics of the system. In particular, the defects and the loose spins (whose flip costs no energy) play key roles in the dynamics. The long-time evolution is characterized by a critical dynamic scaling with a growing length scale xi(t). With random initial configurations, xi(t) exhibits a subdiffusive growth in time, xi(t) approximately t(1/z) with 1/z approximately 0.43, while xi(t) shows a diffusive growth with z=2 for the relaxation within the dominant sector of the ground-state manifold. The nonequilibrium critical dynamics therefore exhibits an interesting initial-state dependence. Persistence and the two-time temporal properties are also discussed.

CRITICAL COARSENING DYNAMICS OF SPIN S =1/2, 3/2 ANTIFERROMAGNETIC ISING MODEL ON TRIANGULAR LATTICE

Kwanghoon Chung, Mookyung Cheon, Iksoo Chang

The critical coarsening dynamics of the spin S =1/2, 3/2 antiferromagnetic Ising model on a triangular lattice is studied by the dynamic Monte Carlo simulation using a heat bath algorithm. The triangular antiferromagnetic Ising (TAI) model possesses an intrinsic geometrical frustration and a large degeneracy of ground state which may affect the equilibrium and non-equilibrium critical behaviors. The S =1/2 TAI has no phase transition at a finite temperature, but it was suggested that the S =3/2 TAI has the Kosterlitz–Thouless (KT)-type phase transition at a finite temperature. We employ a finite size scaling approach for the correlation function from the short-time dynamics of the S =1/2, 3/2 TAI to calculate the values of the static critical exponent η and the dynamic exponent z. For the S =1/2 TAI, our dynamic scaling analysis provides η =0.498±0.006 and z =2.278±0.020 at T =0, agreeing with the previous results. For the S =3/2 TAI, after identifying a KT-transition temperature TKT =0.51±0.01, we find the temperature-dependent η ranging from 0.301±0.008 at T =0.51 to 0.224±0.016 at T =0 along the KT-line whereas the value of z =2.20±0.06 is constant for T≤TKT. It is shown that the spin S =3/2 TAI model and the two-dimensional XY model, sharing the KT-type phase transition, exhibit similar static critical and coarsening dynamics behavior. For both the S =1/2, 3/2 TAI, the value of z (η) is compatible with (larger than) that of the Ising model at Tc and the XY model for T≤TKT in two-dimension. Our results imply that although the quasi-long-range order disappears with ηXY =0 in the two-dimensional XY model at T =0, the S =3/2 TAI still maintains it with η TAI =0.224 due to the effect of a frustration and a high degeneracy of ground state.

Nonequilibrium relaxations within the ground-state manifold in the antiferromagnetic Ising model on a triangular lattice

Eunhye Kim, Sung Jong Lee, Bongsoo Kim

We present an extensive Monte Carlo simulation study on the nonequilibrium kinetics of triangular antiferromagnetic Ising model within the ground state ensemble which consists of sectors, each of which is characterized by a unique value of the string density p through a dimer covering method. Building upon our recent work [Phys. Rev. E 68, 066127 (2003)] where we considered the nonequilibrium relaxation observed within the dominant sector with p=2/3, we here focus on the nonequilibrium kinetics within the minor sectors with p<2/3. The initial configurations are chosen as those in which the strings are straight and evenly distributed. In the minor sectors, we observe a characteristic spatial anisotropy in both equilibrium and nonequilibrium spatial correlations. We observe emergence of a critical relaxation region (in the spatial and temporal domain) which grows as p deviates from p=2/3. Spatial anisotropy appears in the equilibrium spatial correlation with the characteristic length scale xi(e,V)(p) diverging with vanishing string density as xi(e,V)(p) approximately p(-2) along the vertical direction, while along the horizontal direction the spatial length scale diverges as xi(e,H) approximately p(-1). Analytic forms for the anisotropic equilibrium correlation functions are given. We also find that the spin autocorrelation function A(t) shows a simple scaling behavior A(t)=A(t/tau(A)(p)), where the time scale tau(A)(p) shows a power-law divergence with vanishing p as tau(A)(p) approximately p(-phi) with phi approximately or equal to 4. These features can be understood in terms of random walk nature of the fluctuations of the strings within the typical separation between neighboring strings.

Nonequilibrium dynamics of fully frustrated Ising models atT= 0

Márton Karsai, J C Anglès d'Auriac, Ferenc Iglói

We consider two fully frustrated Ising models: the antiferromagnetic triangular model in a field of strength h = HTk B , as well as the Villain model on the square lattice. After a quench from a disordered initial state to T = 0 we study the nonequilibrium dynamics of both models by Monte Carlo simulations. In a finite system of linear size, L , we define and measure sample-dependent ‘first passage time’, t r , which is the number of Monte Carlo steps until the energy is relaxed to the ground state value. The distribution of t r , in particular its mean value, ⟨ t r ( L )⟩, is shown to obey the scaling relation, ⟨ t r ( L )⟩∼ L 2 ln( L / L 0 ), for both models. Scaling of the autocorrelation function of the antiferromagnetic triangular model is shown to involve logarithmic corrections, both at H = 0 and at the field-induced Kosterlitz–Thouless transition: however, the autocorrelation exponent is found to be H -dependent.

Universal Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless dynamic scaling in the intermediate time range in frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnets on a triangular lattice

Ivan S Popov, Pavel Vladimirovich Prudnikov, A. N. Ignatenko +1 more

We investigate nonequilibrium properties of the frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the triangular lattice. Nonequilibrium critical relaxation of frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnets shows a dynamic transition (or, at least, sharp crossover) near the temperature ${T}_{\mathrm{u}}=0.282J$ of the equilibrium ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$-vortex unbinding. We show that starting from the high-temperature initial state, due to the presence of ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ vortices in the system being considered, in a broad temperature range $T<{T}_{\mathrm{u}}$ the dynamic properties in the intermediate time range are similar to those of the two-dimensional XY model below the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. The interaction of ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ vortices with spin-wave degrees of freedom does not emerge until rather long times.

Monte Carlo Study of the Effect of Initial States and Structural Defects on Nonequilibrium Critical Behavior of the Three-Dimensional Ising Model

Vladimir V. Prudnikov, Pavel Vladimirovich Prudnikov, P. N. Malyarenko

The effect of various initial magnetizations m0 and structural defects the nonequilibrium critical behavior of the three-dimensional Ising model is numerically studied. Based on an analysis of the time dependence of the magnetization and the two-time dependence of the autocorrelation function and dynamic susceptibility, the significant effect of initial states on relaxation magnetizations and aging effects characterized by anomalous relaxation inhibition and correlation in the system with increasing waiting time was revealed. The fluctuation–dissipation theorem violation was studied, and the values of the limit fluctuation–dissipation ratio (FDR) are calculated. It is shown that two universality subclasses can be distinguished in the nonequilibrium critical behavior of the three-dimensional Ising model with random initial magnetization m0 These subclasses correspond to the system evolution from the high-temperature (m0 = 0) and low-temperature (m0 = 1) initial states with limit FDRs characteristic of these states.

Critical percolation in the dynamics of the 2D ferromagnetic Ising model

Thibault Blanchard, Leticia F. Cugliandolo, Marco Picco +1 more

Abstract We study the early time dynamics of the 2 d ferromagnetic Ising model instantaneously quenched from the disordered to the ordered, low temperature, phase. We evolve the system with kinetic Monte Carlo rules that do not conserve the order parameter. We confirm the rapid approach to random critical percolation in a time-scale that diverges with the system size but is much shorter than the equilibration time. We study the scaling properties of the evolution towards critical percolation and we identify an associated growing length, different from the curvature driven one. By working with the model defined on square, triangular and honeycomb microscopic geometries we establish the dependence of this growing length on the lattice coordination. We discuss the interplay with the usual coarsening mechanism and the eventual fall into and escape from metastability.
