Abstract

Spectral hole burning in Erbium-doped silica fiber was experimentally studied in a 100+ nm bandwidth. It was observed that the spectral holes overlap even for widely spaced saturating tones (>40 nm); thus, the conventional two-tone subtractive measurement technique cannot be used to separate the holes.

Experimental evidence of coherent population oscillations based on spectral hole-burning in erbium-doped silica fibre

Sebastián Jarabo

\n\nSpectral hole-burning in an erbium-doped silica fibre at room temperature has been experimentally demonstrated. This demonstration can be considered as a clear experimental evidence of the relationship between slow light and coherent population oscillations in erbium-doped fibres. In a 3.5 m erbium-doped silica fibre, spectral holes with a depth up to $1.5\\ \\text{m}^{-1}$ were obtained by coupling a strong and narrow saturating power and measuring changes in the spectral absorption coefficient for a weak and wide probe power. A tuneable ring-cavity erbium-doped fibre laser was employed as saturating source. To obtain a higher saturating power, laser emission was amplified by means of a second fibre amplifier.\n

Spectral hole burningin silica-based and in fluoride-based optical fibre amplifiers

I. Joindot, F. Dupré

The results of spectral hole burning measurements in silica-based and in fluoride-based erbium-doped optical fibre amplifiers are compared. In silica-based fibre, the spectral hole appears clearly, while in fluoride-based fibre, the shape is different and weaker effects occur around the saturating wavelength.

Spectral-hole burning in erbium-doped silica and fluoride fibers

James W. Sulhoff, Ashutosh K. Srivastava, C. Wolf +2 more

Room-temperature (RT) spectral-hole burning (SHB) in erbium-doped silica and fluoride fibers is investigated and compared. SHB in a fluoride fiber is less strong than in a silica fiber and the hole widths are much wider indicating less inhomogeneity.

Spectral hole burning in erbium-doped fiber amplifiers

Maxim A. Bolshtyansky

A new theoretical/numerical model of the spectral hole burning (SHB) effect in erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) is suggested. A new measurement technique for SHB measurement is developed. Experiments are conducted to identify the particular mechanism of SHB. A computer simulation program is developed using this approach. The shape and depth of the spectral hole are in accordance with the suggested theory.
