Stronger slow light effect in densely doped erbium fibers

Abstract

We perform a study of extremely slow pulse propagation speed in densely-doped erbium fibers by using a detuned signal. A quantum coherence effect, coherent population oscillations, produces a very narrow spectral "hole" in the homogeneous broadened absorption profile of the erbium-doped fiber. The resulting rapid spectral variation of the refractive index leads to a large value of the group index. The interparticle interaction between the nearest neighboring active particles due to the high density of erbium ions is considered. The result shows that the nonlinear refractive index can be greatly increased which leads to the smaller group velocity and the larger time delay.

Slow light propagation results from the large dispersion of the refraction index. We report on such effect obtained by the coherent population oscillations effect in an Erbium doped crystal. We achieve a group velocity of 2.7 m/s. The inhomogeneous broadening of the transition is used as an additional parameter to control both the group velocity and the transmission.

Ultraslow Light Propagation in an Inhomogeneously Broadened Rare-Earth Ion-Doped Crystal

We show that coherent population oscillations effect allows us to burn a narrow spectral hole (26 Hz) within the homogeneous absorption line of the optical transition of an erbium ion-doped crystal. The large dispersion of the index of refraction associated with this hole permits us to achieve a group velocity as low as 2.7 m/s with a transmission of 40%. We especially benefit from the inhomogeneous absorption broadening of the ions to tune both the transmission coefficient, from 40% to 90%, and the light group velocity from 2.7 m/s to 100 m/s.

Research on group velocity slowdown in erbium-doped optical fiber under controllable absorption loss

Qiu Wei, Zhang Yun-Dong, Jianbo Ye +6 more

Group velocity of the optical pulse propagation would be reduced based on coherent population oscillation effect in an absorbing medium. According to the absorption properties of erbium-doped optical fiber, there would appear a sharp absorption loss, which brought more difficulties to the actual measurement of slow light and its application in communications. From the ground rate equation of erbium-ion, the delay of optical pulse was simulated under controllable absorption loss, and experiments were implemented to verify the theoretical results. Moreover, we researched how the different pump power and fiber length effect the signal loss and the optical pulse delay.

Effect of ion pairs in fast-light bandwidth in high-concentration erbium-doped fibers

The effect of ion pairs in high-concentration erbium-doped fibers on slow- and fast-light propagation enabled by coherent population oscillations at room temperature has been experimentally investigated. We find that an increase of the erbium ion concentration increases the fractional advancement although it degrades the bandwidth of the modulated signals that propagate at superluminal velocities due to the presence of ion pairs in the fiber.
