Inversionless amplification of picosecond pulses due to Zeeman coherence

Abstract

We extend the basic idea of inversionless amplification to a picosecond test pulse in the absence of initial optical coherences. The crucial role of population trapping by lower level Zeeman coherence in atomc samarium vapor (J=1\ensuremath{\leftrightarrows}J'=0) is demonstrated experimentally and theoretically in a time separated preparation-test setup.

Observation of inversionless amplification in Sm vapour and related experiments

Wulfhard K. Lange, A. Nottelmann, C. Peters

An experiment is presented which demonstrates 'amplification without inversion' (AWI) and 'inversion without amplification' of a picosecond pulse in a generalized lambda-type system. The phenomena are based on Zeeman coherence in the J=1-level of the ground state multiplet in samarium, induced by a picosecond pulse train. The experiment and its relation to other AWI proposals and to previous experiments in atomic spectroscopy are discussed in detail.

Inversionless amplification of ultrashort pulses and coherent population trapping in a three-level medium

Ya I Khanin, Olga A. Kocharovskaya

Coherent bleaching of an absorbing three-level medium and inversionless amplification of an ultrashort pulse are predicted. Both effects are related to the well-known phenomenon of coherent population trapping.

Amplification without population inversion

Olga A. Kocharovskaya, Paul Mandel, Yakov I. Khanin

Three- and four-level schemes of inversionless amplification with different types of coherent pumping is reviewed. Amplification without inversion between the 'bare' states is a result of population inversion between eigenstates of the density matrix. In particular, it can be achieved due to the coherent population trapping, i.e., effective removal from the interaction with the field a fraction of atoms at lower levels.

Inversionless amplification in a three-level medium

Olga A. Kocharovskaya, Paul Mandel, Yevgeny V. Radeonychev

We study all possible resonant three-level configurations where a low-frequency coherent pump can be converted into a high-frequency field in the absence of population inversion at both atomic high-frequency transitions. We identify two different mechanisms that provide such inversionless amplification.

Mechanism of inversionless amplification in four-level atoms with Raman pumping

Heide Doss, Olga A. Kocharovskaya, C. H. Keitel +3 more

Two essentially different mechanisms are known for inversionless amplification. The first is based on coherent population trapping, while the second is connected with the existence of quantum interference effects among dressed states of the coupled atom-field system. Previous investigations of four-level atoms with Raman pumping have emphasized the existence of noninversion lasing by way of the first mechanisms and have interpreted the gain as a result of a population inversion between dressed states. In this case the quantum interference generally hinders the amplification process. By extending this analysis to a broader range of parameters we find that the second mechanism can also become effective. The purpose of this presentation is to show that four-level atoms with a Raman pump can generally support both amplification mechanisms and to define the conditions under which either process may dominate.

Inversionless amplification in a multilevel system

Paul Mandel, Olga A. Kocharovskaya

We prove that the amplification condition for a multifrequency field in an atomic system with multiple splitting of the operating levels implies a population inversion between the eigenstates of the density matrix. This explains the possibility of amplification without population inversion when a coherent superposition state of sublevels is prepared.
