Abstract

Coherent bleaching of an absorbing three-level medium and inversionless amplification of an ultrashort pulse are predicted. Both effects are related to the well-known phenomenon of coherent population trapping.

We study all possible resonant three-level configurations where a low-frequency coherent pump can be converted into a high-frequency field in the absence of population inversion at both atomic high-frequency transitions. We identify two different mechanisms that provide such inversionless amplification.

Inversionless amplification and propagation in an electronuclear level-mixing scheme

We study the propagation of a drive and probe bichromatic field in a compound electronuclear system [Opt. Commun. 179, 525 (2000)] from the viewpoint of inversionless amplification. In the regimes of adiabatic pulse and steady-state propagation, part of the ground-state population is trapped in a dark state thereby reducing the absorption of a probe field. This is reinforced by spontaneous emission for the steady-state case, for which the optimal amplification length is calculated. Beyond this length, the medium becomes absorbent for the probe field. In the complementary limit of ultrashort pulses, the medium reduces to a V scheme in which the drive field can self-induce transparency.

Coherent low-frequency effects in three-level media with asymmetric optical transitions

Olga A. Kocharovskaya

An asymmetry of the spectral characteristics of optical transitions influences strongly the nature of a coherent nonlinear interaction between a broad-band three-level absorber and a series of ultrashort pulses. It is predicted that the absorption of the field will be reduced substantially in a three-level medium with asymmetric 1–3, 2–3 transitions. It is shown that the strong asymmetry results in coherent bleaching of the medium even in the absence of a resonance between the low-frequency 1–2 transition and the pulse repetition frequency (also under the action of high-power single ultrashort pulses). There is a range of parameters where a resonant dependence of the absorbed power on the pulse repetition frequency is observed and this dependence is enhanced appreciably by increasing the asymmetry.
