Abstract

We demonstrate electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a sample of rubidium atoms, trapped in an optical dipole trap. Mixing a small amount of σ − -polarized light to the weak σ + -polarized probe pulses, we are able to measure the absorptive and dispersive properties of the atomic medium at the same time. Features as small as 4 kHz have been detected on an absorption line with 20 MHz line width.

Nonlinear properties of electromagnetically induced transparency in rubidium vapor

Dmitry Strekalov, Andrey B. Matsko, Lute Maleki

Nonlinear properties of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) with respect to a weak probe light are studied. We observe EIT in a rubidium vapor, measure the slow light group velocity and the EIT resonance width, and find that those parameters show a strong dependence on the probe power. We theoretically study the influence of the EIT probe dependence on the performance of the EIT-based optical delay lines and magnetometers.

Theoretical study on the ultra-narrow bandwidth tunable atomic filter with electromagnetically induced transparency

Yang Liu, Shu-Qing Li, Zhong-Ying Feng +2 more

Abstract To obtain the weak signal light detection from the high background noise, we present a theoretical study on the ultra-narrow bandwidth tunable atomic filter with electromagnetically induced transparency. In a three-level Λ -type atomic system in the rubidium D1 line, the bandwidth of the EIT atomic filter is narrowed to ~ 6.5 MHz . And the single peak transmission of the filter can be up to 86 % . Moreover, the transmission wavelength can be tuned by changing the coupling light frequency. This theoretical scheme can also be applied to other alkali atomic systems.

The Construction and Characterization of a Magneto-Optical Trap for Rubidium-87 and Electromagnetically-Induced Transparency in Rubidium-87 in a Vapor Cell

Recent years have observed fast developments in neutral atomic vapor based quantum information storage technology. The technique utilizes light fields in the optical wavelength region as signal carrier and retriever and neutral atomic systems (e.g. single atoms, ensembles of atoms, atom-like defects in solids) as storage media. Photons are robust carriers of information due to their high velocity (c = 2.998 x 108 m/s) and ease of transportation (they propagate rectilinearly with low loss). Their high mobility, however, makes it a challenging task to spatially localize and therefore store them. Atoms (or atom-like systems), on the other hand, can be easily localized in space while providing quantum states accessible to photons and therefore are ideal candidates for storage media. Electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) is a light-induced atomic coherence phenomenon that dramatically modifies the optical properties of an atomic medium to a weak probe field by the application of a strong coupling field. As a probe pulse propagates in an EIT medium it experiences ultraslow group velocity and generates a copropagating spin wave. These consequences of EIT can be exploited for light pulse storage and retrieval in an atomic medium.

Cavity-linewidth narrowing by means of electromagnetically induced transparency

Hai Wang, David J. Goorskey, W. H. Burkett +1 more

Cavity-linewidth narrowing in a ring cavity that is due to the high dispersion and reduced absorption produced by electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in rubidium-atom vapor has been experimentally observed. The cavity linewidth with rubidium atoms under EIT conditions can be significantly narrowed. Cavity-linewidth narrowing was measured as a function of coupling beam power.

Observation of the Electromagnetically Induced Transparency and Dispersion-like Structure in Trapped Cs Atoms

Kyoung-Dae Kim, Mi-Rang Kwon, Jung Bog Kim +1 more

We report experiemtnal results demonstrating the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in trapped Cs atoms. EIT occurs at the Λ-type configuration where the re0-pumping laser simultaneously plays a role as the coupling laser in the presence of a magneto-optical trapping and weak magnetic fields. Dependences of EIT signal on both the intensity and the detuning of the coupling laser were investigated. Linear absorption spectra for cold cesium atoms in the magneto-optical trap have been observed and shown the pronounced dispersion-like structure with sub-natural linewidth of 1 MHz due to the cooling laser.
