Rydberg spectra of Neon probed by associative ionization in synchrotron + laser pump-probe experiments

Abstract

The one- and two-colour spectra of Neon Rydberg states have been recorded in the energy region below the first ionization threshold. Access to this region is achieved by recording the yield of Ne2+ ions formed in an associative ionization process between atoms in the Rydberg states formed in the photonic excitation and ground state neutral atoms. The one-colour spectra permit a study of the AI process as a function of the principal quantum number of the photo-excited Rydberg state while the two-colour spectra give access to Rydberg series previously unobserved using photon excitation.

Two-photon optogalvanic Rydberg spectra of neon

Naveed K. Piracha, B Suleman, S H Khan +1 more

We report extensive new data on the single-colour two-photon optogalvanic spectra of neon in the visible region. The experimental method enables us to record a pure two-photon spectrum in a region which is full of one-photon transitions. A large number of two-photon transitions originating from two metastable 3s(3/2) 2 , 3s'( 1/2 ) 0 states and one non-metastable 3s(3/2) I state of the 2p 5 3s configuration of neon have been recorded and arranged into 19 Rydberg series. The interchannel interactions among the overlapping Rydberg series have been studied using the multichannel quantum defect theory.

Laser photoexcitation of Rydberg states in helium with n > 400

S. D. Hogan, Y Houston, B Wei

Helium atoms travelling in pulsed supersonic beams have been photoexcited from the metastable 1s2s 3 S 1 level to Rydberg states with principal quantum numbers exceeding 400 by resonance-enhanced two-colour two-photon excitation using narrow-bandwidth CW laser radiation. To achieve this, the photoexcitation region was shielded and stray electric fields cancelled using a cubic arrangement of 80 mm × 80 mm copper plates. The excited Rydberg atoms were detected by pulsed electric field ionisation downstream from this photoexcitation region. Comparison of the experimental spectra with the results of calculations indicate that the stray electric fields at the position of Rydberg state photoexcitation were reduced to as low as 160 μ V cm –1 . Using helium in these experiments minimises temporal changes in the stray fields resulting from surface adsorption. Measurements performed 70 h apart indicate that the rate of change of these fields was on the order of 2 μ V cm –1 per h, making beams of metastable helium atoms ideally suited as probes for high precision electrometry in spectroscopy experiments involving less readily available species such as positronium or antihydrogen.

Rydberg excitation spectrum of K40 ultracold Fermi gases

Donghao Li, Guoqi Bian, Jie Miao +5 more

We report the measurement of the Rydberg excitation spectrum by two-photon process in ultracold $^{40}\mathrm{K}$ Fermi gases. Two different methods are employed to measure the Rydberg excitation spectrum, depending on the power of the probe laser. One scheme is to reduce atomic losses by means of electromagnetically induced transparency. The other is to enhance the atomic losses by spontaneous avalanche ionization due to the strong Rydberg-Rydberg interactions. We verify the consistency of both of the methods. The highest Rydberg states detectable in our experiment are limited to $n\ensuremath{\le}62$ due to the competition between the long Rydberg blockade effective range and the limited atomic cloud size.

High-Resolution Electron Spectroscopy of Laser-Excited Ba Rydberg Atoms

Herbert H. Rinneberg, Jörg Neukammer, U. Majewski +1 more

The ionization of $6sns^{1}S_{0}$ Rydberg states of $^{138}\mathrm{Ba}$ has been investigated by high-resolution electron spectroscopy. The Rydberg states were excited by two cw dye lasers via the $6s6p^{1}P_{1}$ level. The electron spectra show rich structure between 0.025 and 3 eV, largely attributable to collisional (Penning) ionization, photoionization, and autoionizing transitions. The first process might be interpreted as superelastic scattering of the Rydberg electron by optically pumped $\mathrm{Ba}(6s6p^{1}P_{1})$ or $\mathrm{Ba}(6s5d^{1}D_{2})$ atoms.

Collisional and thermal ionization of sodium Rydberg atoms: I. Experiment fornS andnD atoms withn= 8–20

I. I. Ryabtsev, Denis B. Tretyakov, Ilya I. Beterov +3 more

Collisional and thermal ionization of sodium n S and n D Rydberg atoms with n = 8–20 has been studied. The experiments were performed using a two-step pulsed laser excitation in an effusive atomic beam at atom density of about 2 × 10 10 cm −3 . Molecular and atomic ions from associative, Penning and thermal ionization processes were detected. It was found that the atomic ions were created mainly due to photoionization of Rydberg atoms by photons of blackbody radiation at the ambient temperature of 300 K. Blackbody ionization rates and effective lifetimes of Rydberg states of interest were determined. The molecular ions were found to be from associative ionization in Na( nL ) + Na(3S) collisions. Rate constants of associative ionization have been measured using an original method based on relative measurements of Na + 2 and Na + ion signals.

Laser diagnostics of the energy spectrum of Rydberg states of the lithium-7 atom

Boris B. Zelener, Sergey A. Saakyan, Vladimir A. Sautenkov +3 more

The spectra of excited lithium-7 atoms prepared in a magneto-optical trap are studied using a UV laser. The laser diagnostics of the energy of Rydberg atoms is developed based on measurements of the change in resonance fluorescence intensity of ultracold atoms as the exciting UV radiation frequency passes through the Rydberg transition frequency. The energies of various nS configurations are obtained in a broad range of the principal quantum number n from 38 to 165. The values of the quantum defect and ionization energy obtained in experiments and predicted theoretically are discussed.
