Abstract

Backward photon echo and its decay were observed in the X Σ - A Σ transition of Na 2 undergoing collisions with Ar buffer gas. By using the quantum mechanical transport equation, expressions of the various collisionaI cross sections are presented. The results are applied to the experimtent, and several kinds of cross sections are obtained for the Na 2 -Ar system. Furthermore by assuming the Gaussian collision kernel, two parameters of the population kernel are derived for the Na 2 ( X Σ )-Ar collisions.

The Backward Photon Echoes in Na and Na2in the Nanosecond and Picosecond Regions

Masayuki Fujita, 修治 浅香, Hiroki Nakatsuka +1 more

Backward generation of echoes with three-pulse excitation is discussed in solid and gaseous systems. The backward echo in gases is possible as in solids but with different combinations of incident pulse directions. The first experiments in a gas were performed on the atomic sodium D 1 line in both the nanosecond and the picosecond region. Furthermore, we have observed the first backward echo in a molecular system, that is, in both of the X Σ -A Σ and X Σ -B I I transitions of Na 2 . Decays of the echoes were measured as a function of buffer gas (Ar) pressure, and collisional cross sections due to phase interrupting collisions were evaluated for each of the above cases.

Cross sections for the excitation energy transfer induced by collisions with He, Ar and Na atoms

Vlasta Horvatić, Mladen Movre, Cedomil Vadla

The cross sections for the excitation energy transfer induced by collisions with He, Ar and Na ground-state atoms have been measured. The sodium atoms in the 4D state have been produced by two-photon excitation using cw laser radiation at 578.89 nm. Within a model which takes into account collisional population and depopulation of the 4F level as well as radiative relaxation (direct or cascade) of the 3D, 4P, 4D and 4F states ending in the 3P level, the rate for the collisional transfer turns out to be related to the ratio of the steady-state populations created in 3D and 4D states. They have been determined by measuring the fluorescence intensities of the and transitions. The measurements yield the following cross section values for those processes investigated: , and , at .

Studies of collisional dephasing of two-photon excited atomic sodium

Leonid Rybak, Lev Chuntonov, Andrey Gandman +2 more

Coherence relaxation in Na vapor was studied utilizing a pump-probe method with femtosecond pulses. The coherence was created by the pump pulse, which excited the Na atoms to the 4S state. The atoms were further excited to the 7P state by the probe pulse. As a result a coherent UV radiation was emitted by the atoms. This emission was used to study the relaxation of both the 4S-3S and 7P-3S coherent superpositions. The relaxation is mainly due to collisions with the Ar atoms serving as a buffer gas. Coherence relaxation times and collisional cross-sections for the Na-Ar collision pairs were extracted experimentally.

Observation and relaxation of the two-photon-excited-state trilevel echo in sodium vapor

T. J. Chen, D. DeBeer, Sven R. Hartmann

The collisional relaxation cross section of the excited 3P‐3D superposition state of Na with Ar is measured. A photon echo from the 3P‐3D transition in Na vapor is spontaneously emitted at λ=8183 Å after excitation of the 3D state and for the 3P3/2 state. (AIP)

Observation and relaxation of the two-photon-excited trilevel echo in sodium vapor

T. J. Chen, D. DeBeer, Sven R. Hartmann

A photon echo from the allowed 3D–3P transition in Na vapor is spontaneously emitted after a single-pulse one-photon excitation of the 3P state is followed by a single-pulse two-photon excitation of the 3D state. The collisional relaxation cross section of the excited 3D–3P superposition state of Na in Ar is measured.
