Abstract

Coherence relaxation in Na vapor was studied utilizing a pump-probe method with femtosecond pulses. The coherence was created by the pump pulse, which excited the Na atoms to the 4S state. The atoms were further excited to the 7P state by the probe pulse. As a result a coherent UV radiation was emitted by the atoms. This emission was used to study the relaxation of both the 4S-3S and 7P-3S coherent superpositions. The relaxation is mainly due to collisions with the Ar atoms serving as a buffer gas. Coherence relaxation times and collisional cross-sections for the Na-Ar collision pairs were extracted experimentally.

Observation and relaxation of the two-photon-excited trilevel echo in sodium vapor

T. J. Chen, D. DeBeer, Sven R. Hartmann

A photon echo from the allowed 3D–3P transition in Na vapor is spontaneously emitted after a single-pulse one-photon excitation of the 3P state is followed by a single-pulse two-photon excitation of the 3D state. The collisional relaxation cross section of the excited 3D–3P superposition state of Na in Ar is measured.

Cross sections for the excitation energy transfer induced by collisions with He, Ar and Na atoms

Vlasta Horvatić, Mladen Movre, Cedomil Vadla

The cross sections for the excitation energy transfer induced by collisions with He, Ar and Na ground-state atoms have been measured. The sodium atoms in the 4D state have been produced by two-photon excitation using cw laser radiation at 578.89 nm. Within a model which takes into account collisional population and depopulation of the 4F level as well as radiative relaxation (direct or cascade) of the 3D, 4P, 4D and 4F states ending in the 3P level, the rate for the collisional transfer turns out to be related to the ratio of the steady-state populations created in 3D and 4D states. They have been determined by measuring the fluorescence intensities of the and transitions. The measurements yield the following cross section values for those processes investigated: , and , at .

The collisional relaxation cross section of the excited 3P‐3D superposition state of Na with Ar is measured. A photon echo from the 3P‐3D transition in Na vapor is spontaneously emitted at λ=8183 Å after excitation of the 3D state and for the 3P3/2 state. (AIP)

Coherence Transfer Between the 32P1/2 and 32P3/2 States in Sodium, Induced in Collisions with Noble Gas Atoms

B. Niewitecka, L. Krause

Coherence transfer accompanying 32P1/2 → 32P3/2 excitation transfer in sodium, induced in collisions with noble gas atoms, has been investigated using methods of sensitized fluorescence. Oriented 32P1/2 sodium atoms were produced by irradiating a mixture of sodium vapor and a noble gas with D1σ+ resonance radiation, and their subsequent collisions with the buffer gas atoms resulted in the simultaneous transfer of coherence and excitation from the 2P1/2 state to the 2P3/2 state. Measurements of the ratio of circular polarizations of the D2 sensitized fluorescence and D1 resonance fluorescence resulted in the following cross sections for coherence transfer. Na–He : 7.1 ± 0.7 Å2; Na–Ne : 6.2 ± 0.6 Å2; Na–Ar : 12.0 ± 1.2 Å2; Na–Kr : 6.8 ± 0.7 Å2; Na–Xe : 6.9 ± 0.7 Å2.

Collisional modification of the atomic-Na 3s 2 S1/2 –5s 2 S1/2 two-color two-photon polarization spectrum

LeRoy F. Cook, D. A. Olsgaard, Mark D. Havey +1 more

An experimental investigation of the atomic-Na 3s $^{2}$${\mathit{S}}_{1/2--}$5s $^{2}$${\mathit{S}}_{1/2}$ two-color two-photon polarization spectrum has been made. Measurements of the linear polarization degree of the two-photon transition were made for one laser tuned within a \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}100 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ range of the atomic-Na 3p $^{2}$${\mathit{P}}_{\mathit{j}}$ levels, with the second adjusted to satisfy the two-photon resonance condition. The relatively short-pulse (\ensuremath{\sim}0.5 ns) lasers used eliminate effects on the spectrum due to atomic-Na hyperfine interactions and radiation trapping, while greatly reducing depolarization due to collisions with Ar gas. In the absence of collisions, the measured polarization spectrum is in excellent agreement with calculations. Measurements of the Ar pressure dependence of the spectrum revealed strong depolarization in the vicinity of resonant excitation through the 3p $^{2}$${\mathit{P}}_{3/2}$ level. A collisional depolarization cross section of 200(30) \AA{} for this process was deduced from the data.
