Dependence of the Photon Echo Polarization on the Second Pulse Area

Abstract

With regard to the depolarizing collisions the polarization properties of the photon echo formed by two exciting pulses linearly polarized at an angle ψ to each other with arbitrary values of their areas and arbitrary ratios of the durations and the time of reversible Doppler relaxation are obtained. The case of the small area of the first exciting pulse is examined. It is shown that the polarization properties of the photon echo can be described by equations obtained in the limit of small areas for both the first and the second exciting pulses up to the area of the second exciting pulse of the order of unity.

Tri-level Echo in the Case of Exciting Pulses with Arbitrary Shapes

Igor V. Yevseyev, Valery M. Yermachenko, Решетов Владимир Александрович

In the limit of small exciting light-pulse areas the amplitude and polarization of the tri-level photon echo in gases formed by the exciting pulses with arbitrary shapes are obtained. It is shown that the dependence of the tri-level photon echo signal on the mutual orientation of the exciting pulse polarization vectors may be used to determine the optical coherence-matrix relaxation characteristics for an optically forbidden transition. The conditions under which a tri-level photon echo pulse repeats the shape of each of the exciting pulses are defined. It is proved that the tri-level photon-echo polarization properties do not depend on the shapes of the exciting pulses, either for small light-pulse areas or for the tri-level echo formation on narrow spectral lines.

Polarization properties of photon echo signals in ytterbium vapor: dependence on the area of exciting pulses

Н. Н. Рубцова, A. A. Kovalyov, Хворостов Евгений Борисович +4 more

A brief review of theoretical predictions for photon echo polarization properties is presented from the viewpoint of their dependence eon the are of exciting pulses and on the contribution of depolarizing collisions. The choice of intercombination transition in ytterbium vapor as subject of investigation is explained. First experimental results on kinetics of resonant fluorescence at the transition of Yb (6s2$0 (superscript 1S0-(6s6p) 3P1 are presented for pure ytterbium vapor and its mixtures with Xe.

Collision-induced stimulated photon echo at the transition 0–1

Решетов Владимир Александрович, Е. Н. Попов

The stimulated photon echo formed by the sequence of three laser excitation pulses in gaseous medium on the transition with the angular momentum change 0-1 is considered with an account of elastic depolarizing collisions. The polarization properties of this echo may be potentially interesting for the purposes of data processing. It is shown, that with the polarization of the first pulse orthogonal to that of the second and third pulses the appearance of the echo signal will be entirely determined by the action of collisions. The existence of this echo is determined by the difference in the alignment and the orientation relaxation rates of the excited level.

Polarization properties of coherent signals excited by incoherent light pulses

Решетов Владимир Александрович, Igor V. Yevseyev

The polarizations of photon echoes and superradiance signals formed by incoherent partially polarized exciting pulses are calculated in case of arbitrary values of the resonant level angular momenta. It is shown that the temporal shape of incoherent photon echoes may reproduce the reversed temporal shape of the first exciting pulse.

Conventional and collision photon echo in ytterbium vapor

Н. Н. Рубцова, Sergei A. Kochubei, В. Н. Ищенко +2 more

The polarization properties of the photon echo generated by two linearly polarized pulses of resonant radiation at the (6s6p)3 P 1 ↔ (6s 2)1 S 0 transition of 174Yb are investigated. A complicated polarization behavior of the photon echo versus an angle between the polarization vectors of the excitation pulses is revealed in a mixture of ytterbium vapor with inert gas. For the angles ranging from 0° to 75°, a conventional echo with its linear polarization coinciding with the second excitation pulse dominates and the echo amplitude decreases with an increasing angle. For the angles ranging from 75° to 89°, the photon echo is elliptically polarized. Finally, for an angle of 90°, the conventional echo disappears and the collision echo becomes linearly polarized along the first excitation pulse.

Polarization properties of long-lived stimulated photon echo

Решетов Владимир Александрович, Е. Н. Попов

The polarization properties of the long-lived stimulated photon echo formed on the transition ja → jb with the atomic levels degenerate in the projections of the angular momenta are studied theoretically. The two particular transitions ja = 1 → jb = 0 and ja = 1 → jb = 1 with degenerate ground state ja = 1 are discussed. For the transitions ja = 1 → jb = 1 the polarizations and areas of the first ('write') and the third ('read') excitation pulses are found when the echo polarization faithfully reproduces the arbitrary polarization of the weak (single-photon) second ('information') pulse, so that this echo scheme may implement the quantum memory for a single-photon polarization qubit, while for the transitions ja = 1 → jb = 0 it is shown, that the echo polarization differs from that of the second pulse at any conditions.
