Abstract

The results are given of an investigation of the luminescence and absorption spectra in the region of th stimulated transitions involving the ground and excited states in Y 3 Al 5 O 12 :Cr 3+ crystals. The dependence of the threshold population of the metastable level on the spectral losses at the emission frequency was studied. It was found that the stimulated emission from Cr 3+ ions in Y 3 Al 5 O 12 crystals was possible only at low temperatures.

OPTICAL ABSORPTION SPECTRUM OF EXCITED Cr3+IONS IN YTTRIUM ALUMINUM GARNET

B. K. Sevast’yanov, D. T. Sviridov, V. P. Orekhova +3 more

An investigation was made of the absorption spectrum of Cr 3+ ions in the ground ( 4 A 2 ) and metastable ( 2 E) states, and of the luminescence spectrum of the same ions in Y 3 Al 5 O 12 crystals at 300 and 77°K. The effective absorption cross sections were determined for the 4 A 2 state. The luminescence deexcitation time was found to be 1.5 and 9 msec at 300 and 77°K, respectively. The absorption spectrum of the 2 E state had four wide absorption bands with maxima at 16,700, 23,300, 28,600, and 40,500 cm –1 . The theoretical energy level scheme of Cr 3+ was calculated for Dq = 1725 cm –1 , G = 640 cm –1 , C = 3200 cm –1 , v = 495 cm –1 , and v' = 259 cm –1 , making an allowance for the mixing of the Γ trig S states. The experimentally observed absorption bands were attributed to specific transitions and the theoretical and experimental intensities were compared.

Emission of λ≈2 μ stimulated radiation by holmium in aluminum holmium garnet crystals

A O Ivanov, I. V. Mochalov, Alexandra M. Tkachuk +2 more

Stimulated emission was obtained from Ho 3+ ions ( 5 I 7 → 5 I 8 transition) in a new single-component self-activated system with aluminum holmium garnet crystals grown by the Czochralski method. The thresholds of the λ= 2.129 and 2.122 laser emission at 90 °K were 9 and 14 J/cm, respectively. The absorption and luminescence spectra were used in the derivation of the Stark splitting scheme of the 5 I 7 and 5 I 8 terms. The lifetime of the 5 I 7 term was determined (τ≈10 msec).

Spectral characteristics of the thulium ion and cascade generation of stimulated radiation in a YAlO3:Tu3+:Cr3+crystal

A O Ivanov, I. V. Mochalov, Alexandra M. Tkachuk +2 more

Stimulated emission was obtained from Tu 3+ ions in YAlO 3 crystals doped with 1.0 at. % Tu and 0.1 at. % Cr. The stimulated radiation was generated by the 3 F 4 → 3 H 5 (λ 1 )→ 3 H 5 → 3 H 6 (λ 2 ) cascade at wavelengths λ 1 = 2.34 μ and λ 1 =1.93 μ and the threshold was 3.5 J/cm at 90 °K. A scheme of radiative and nonradiative transitions between the terms was constructed. The absorption and luminescence spectra recorded at 4.2 °K were used to derive the Stark splitting scheme of the 3 H 4 and 3 H 6 terms of the thulium ion.

Optical Properties of Ho3+ Ions in Yttrium Gallium Garnet and Yttrium Iron Garnet

L. F. Johnson, J. F. Dillon, J. P. Remeika

Optical absorption and emission spectra are used to determine the energy levels of the $^{5}I_{8}$ ground state and $^{5}I_{7}$ excited state of ${\mathrm{Ho}}^{3+}$ in diamagnetic yttrium gallium garnet (YGaG) and ferrimagnetic yttrium iron garnet (YIG). The results for YGaG are consistent with the ${D}_{2}$ site symmetry of the dodecahedral site in the garnet structure. Energy levels in YIG which are separated by site inequivalency are identified from spectra observed as the ${\mathrm{Fe}}^{3+}$ magnetization is rotated in the ($1\overline{1}0$) plane. Stimulated emission is observed from ${\mathrm{Ho}}^{3+}$ in YGaG at 2.086 and 2.114 \ensuremath{\mu} and from ${\mathrm{Ho}}^{3+}$ in YIG at 2.086, 2.089, and 2.107 \ensuremath{\mu}. Each of the lines in YIG is composed of two superimposed electronic transitions. The exchange field in YIG makes possible magnetic tuning of coherent emission over a range of 70 \AA{}.

Enhanced absorption by stimulated emission in three excited states of Er3+ in yttrium aluminum garnet

Yoshinobu Maeda, Masatoshi Migitaka

Using a laser diode modulated at 250 and 500 MHz, dependence of enhanced absorption on both sample length and temperature was investigated in an erbium doped yttrium aluminum garnet crystal. The transmitted laser intensity decreased with a decay time of 300 ps for sample lengths greater than 3.0 mm and temperatures higher than 50 K when the incident laser intensity increased. In addition, an emission peak was observed near 835 nm corresponding to the transition from the S3/24 level to the I13/24 in Er3+. It was suggested that the enhanced absorption was caused by stimulated emission in three excited states.

Spectral properties of rare-earth ions in YAlO3 crystals

V. A. Antonov, P. A. Arsenev, K. E. Bienert +1 more

YAlO3 crystals have been prepared with small percentages of different rare earths substituted for yttrium. The absorption and luminescence spectra of the samples activated with Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb have been measured at 77 K. An analysis of these spectra gave the positions of many of the crystalline Stark levels. Stimulated emission has been observed from Ho3+, Er3+, and Tm3+ ions in crystals of YAlO3.
